When is the right time to talk to your kids?

With all that is going on in this economy, many people losing their jobs, losing their homes, higher gas and food, etc., many ask how do I talk to my kids. I like many of you feel bad about having to say no to my kids when they reach for that special snack or that toy.

The fact of the matter, this is economy is cause families to come back to dinner table together and have open discussions together. So why not discuss the what is going on with the economy with your children. My daughter (8 years old) stated, "Mommy, I noticed that there has been a lot of people talking about money, lately. We have even been talking about it in school, some kids don't understand what's going on, some kids are sad because there parents lost their jobs." As a parent, finding the right words to say was hard.

I recalled conversations that I had with my parents as a child about the value of a dollar. So I had to put on my FDIC Speaker Hat and broke it down to my kids in a language that met their age range. Many may say you have an unfair advantage because you give "Money Smarts" seminars, well, that might be so, however, there are programs out there to assist parents with this matter.

We have got to get back to the basics of remembering the times of when we were children and how our parents had these discussions openly with us. Many children of today are being sheltered from the truth about money and the role it plays in our lives. The FDIC has information that can assist you in teaching your children about money, the banking system,etc.

What to do if your bank fails and you have a Safe Deposit Box there?

In the last couple of weeks, we have experienced some major problems in the banking world. In these times, it is difficulty to know what to do or where to go for answers. However, you can count on Urban Knight Enterprises, Inc. to be there for you.

When an insured bank or thrift closes, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) usually arranges for another institution to take it over, including branches where you might have a safe deposit box. In those situations, you should be able to conduct business as usual. If the FDIC cannot find a buyer for your bank, it arranges for you to remove the contents of your safe deposit box so you can obtain a box at another institution, if you wish. This is done within a few days after the bank fails.

It is imperative that your contact information is up to date: Your address, telephone numbers,etc. By law the banking institutions are required make three attempts to contact you. If they are unable to reach you, your contents may be placed on the www.UnclaimedProperty.com by the Federal Reserve. If this occurs you should check this website to verify if contents are there. If they are there, you will need to either call for or download a claim form from their website.

You will need to send two forms of ID, at least one of them must have a photo along with the claim form. It is also required that the form is notarized before mailing to the required party.

So please practice due diligence and safeguard your contents, make a list of your items that are stored, and check with your elder family or friends to alert them of this information. Don't forget to call on us if you should need your claim form notarized.

For years, I have used mass e-mail marketing campaigns to promote my business directly to mortgage, title and field service companies. Once a month I send out ove 200 e-mails to various companies throughout the United States to market my services. I usually get about 10 - 20 hits from marketing this way. Some companies will send you return e-mails, contracts in the mail, or requests for assignments just from that initial introduction letter about your services.

The contents of your advertisement should include: your name, service types, areas of coverage, contact info, availbility and a little description about your services. Branding your e-mails is an added plus because it promotes a professional finishing touch.

I even advertise in foreign websites to reach consumers looking to have immigration or adoption services performed.

Do not limit yourself to advertising on local sites, expand your reach, the Internet is a powerful, use it to your advantage.

Tips on what contents to store in your Bank Safe Deposit Boxes!

Urban Knight Enterprises, Inc. specializes in performing safe deposit inventory for many bank institutions. Banking institutions are typically not allowed to used internal notaries to perform or assist in the inventory of bank safe deposit boxes.

Often times, we are asked what can or can not be stored in safe deposit boxes. We have compiled a comprehensive list. Please be advised that you don't have to put all of the items below into your box. Once you decide what items you are going to store there, keep a list of the contents, updating it whenever you add or remove items. The list should include the location of the box and key.

Often times, as professionals, we cringe at the thought of having to attend business functions, forums, etc. I use to make it a practice to show up and sneak out as soon as possible. The thought wearing a fake smile or the meet greet social gathering was just overbearing for me.

Well, I took a long look at my disposition and realized that I was hurting myself, my business and cheating my company out of the opportunity for growth.

You see, once I changed my disposition, I began to see the value of it. Though you may not always get a lead right away, they do come. What I have learned to do is to be happy about introducing myself, my company and the services that I have to offer. If you are not excited about what you do, than no one us willl be either.

Recently, I attended a business forum and experienced a fruitful day of new prospects. I received a lead with contact info to a pharmacy company for id proofing, arrange a business lunch date with a title company and was sent an e-mail to advertise in a women's business yellowpages. You just don't know where a lead may come from.

Be bold, be brave and get out there and represent yourself and your business that will get people motivated to pick up the phone and give you a call for service.

In my ongoing pursuit of looking for great advertisement sites, I came across this little gem that offers free advertisement. It is a website for professional services. It allows you to advertise your services and display your appointment schedule on-line. Anyone can use it, a notary, realtor or a graphic photographer...hence the nursery rhyme. :) Corny, I know!

However it is especially great for those professionals who offers mobile services which allows the customer to choose where they would like the service performed. What I really like, is that you can list each service individually and provide your rate info, etc.

Notaries, Please Don't Fall Victim to Scams, Promises of Work, etc.!

I don't know about you guys and gals, but I have been getting flooded with e-mails to advertise on various Notary websites. These sites seem to be popping out of thin air. They all appear to be offering xyz if you pay this, and for this price you get this, oh if you do pay this you will be listed for a lifetime or on the premier listing.

There is a new trend in which Joan spoke of regarding Signing Companies asking Notaries to Bid for Work....Beware! These companies use a grading system to leverage who they can get to do their closings for low rates. If you give the lowest rate you will get called, however if you quote a rate that is more suitable for what is required of you then you are placed in least used pile. When you are approached by companies of this nature you should always inquire about what thay are asking you to do prior to just quoting a price. (# of docs in loan package, check the mileage,etc.) Remember, your operating costs are involved.

Another trend involves Signing Companies asking notaries to pay a fee in order to obtain work from them. Some will say you have to pay a percentage for every closing you are assigned or pay a whopper of a fee upon joining there network. They will say this fee is need for our operating cost, well, your questions should be "Why are you in business?' Aren't you getting a percentage from Title to locate a Notary for assignments?" and the line of questioning goes on. Why anybody would want to pay for work is just outrageous to me because it is not a fair playground. You would be allowing this company to get paid twice, once by you and by the title company. Actually, three times, if you count your operating cost incurred and time.

Do not believe the hype. Many of these companies do not honor their offerings, not unless you threaten to report them for email fraud with their local attorney general and the FBI. LooK to see how long these agencies have been in business, check BBB, the D&B, review blogs.

This is not true of all of these sites, there are some that are true to their word. These companies have great reviews and stong honest ethical standards.

Practice due diligence and research these companies before paying them your hard earned money!!!

Respecting One's Craft...Never Allow Others to Bargain your Services!

Under normal circumstances, I would not discuss matters of this nature with others, especially since it's a reoccuring heated debate with the hubby. However, this is one fight that is going live! :)

I have been getting a lot of leads for services from the Mr.'s place of employment, which is all good. The services have ranged from refinances to immigration assitance. I don't want sound like an ungrateful person, however, I hate it when he feels he has the authority bargain my services.

1st incident: One of his co-workers was refinancing an investment property. Louisiana requires two witnesses for closings performed outside of it's state. I assisted in obtaining witnesses, traveled to job site and performed the closing. My client was advised of service fees prior to the closing, all was good. I didn't know was that my husband let this person talk him into looking at this an opportunity for him and I to have quality time together, playing on his emotions and friendship. So, I was thinking they were going to take us out to lunch as a form of payment, oh no, what a crop of you know what. Mr. comes with this romantic love talk about us having some time alone. Well, needless to say, I got stiffed by his coworker, stiffed by my husband and left paying for a lunch that I didn't want in the first place. Nothing gained, Money lost...oh yeah Quality Moment, priceless.

2nd incident: A coworker needed some docs notarized. This is a long time buddy of the Mr. So, he felt that I should perform the services for free. To further the insult, he wanted me to give him my seal and log book to perform the act himself. So now, I am supposed to break the law to accommodate services for his buddy. Thanks, but no thanks.

3rd incident: The Mr. comes home and tells me about a coworker needing 50 items certified and how she went to a notary who wanted to charge $5 per page. He then went on to tell me how he told his coworker of how he felt that was too expensive. Well, the hell of sparks and rage came down on him. He had just push me to the edge and all I could see was red. The price quoted was correct, many notaries in this area hike up prices making it bad for trustworthy notaries. I settled my self down and had to ask my husband to keep his opinions to himself, do not discuss cost, negotiate or meddle in my services. It hurt me to my heart to speak to him in that way but it had to be done. And finally but not least, I told him not to bargain my services, because I am not Bargain Basement Pammy.

I did perform the job, however I wasn't going to let it go with this customer that the first Notary was not quoting a correct mandated fee of PA regs. Now , a discount was given but it was from a win win prospective in which I would benefit a tax writeoff.

The moral of this story is that business is business, the cost of business should not be waived unless the person rendering the services offers to do so. Don't allow family, friends or customers to set your prices, your price is your price. And finally, all ways respect one's craft. I just had to release and now I feel great. It's okay to have a laugh at my expense.

A Story that Hits Close to Home, it can happen to any of Us....

Early this morning, I was awaken to the Larry King Live Show. The topic was of course related to current nightmares of the mortgage crisis.

The program had one family that fell victims to a loan modification that stated they were forced into. This had troubled me a little because I was requested to close over 50 loan modifications within a month by this same company. I remember many clients informing me that they were contacted by this company stating that they were eligible to pull monies out from the loans and that nothing would change with their terms. It amazed me as to how people believed that nothing would change. Many of them would fail to read the docs although, I strongly urged them too. I pointed out the fact of there was not RTCs in their packages but they signed anyway putting their blind faith in others. I could not help but feel that I may of play a part in someone losing their home and that caused me to feel sick to the stomach.

The second part of the show was about a fellow Loan Processor/Notary (name omitted, viewed full story at CNN.com) of Santa Barbara, CA who also fell victim to the mortgage crisis. This lady expressed how she had a three bedroom condo that she shared with her dogs and now living out of her car. She reported how her business was prosperous for along time and when the mortgage crisis hit how she lost everything. She could no longer afford the condo because of the rapid lost of wages she obtain from loan processing and closings. I began to think about the fact that I offer these same services and what would happen if the floor suddenly fell from under my feet. How would I be able to take care of my children? What if my husband lost his job, do I really make enough to provide for my family?

The late nights, brainstorming...deleting pages, starting over from scratch...I am plum tired. Losing all sense of time was the main breakdown for me...debating whether over the color palate and capturing the true essence of what I wanted my viewers to see was a nightmare in it's self. Allowing others to see you through your eyes......wow, what a deep thought of self exposure revealed.

Getting Ready to Launch 1 of 2 Websites, Stomach Full of Knots!

I have been working diligently on building a website for a while. Well, I got so involved that I started building another website just for one main service that I offer, which be launched some time next week or sooner.

I never knew all the intricate detailing that goes into designing a website and have gained a new respect for professional website designers. It gave me enjoyment and must say I am quite proud of my accomplishment. However, I am getting nervous about launching it.

All of these thoughts are swimming around in brain...Will it be successful? Is the color scheme, okay? Will I generate busness from it? Have I wasted my time? You got to be joking! What was you thinking?

I haven't experienced this type of stomach crunching in a long time. Can anyone offer some words of encouragement? Tell me about your feelings when launching your first website. Give some tips on where to link website? Etc... I need something to calm my nerves...

A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.

As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier.
I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking.

I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. The Coke is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the Coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need water.

I put the Coke on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.
I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote.
Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day:
the car isn't washed
the bills aren't paid
there is a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter
the flowers don't have enough water,
there is still only 1 check in my check book,
I can't find the remote,
I can't find my glasses,
and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it,
but first I'll read some blogs....

You Can! No Matter What!

I am preparing for my oldest son's graduation tomorrow. He will be graduating from Phoenixville High School. I am a very proud parent, indeed. You see my son had struggled in school due to having a reading disability called Dyslexia. He had to go to special classes, was wrongly diagnosed for years and the drama went on. However, upon entering high school he said enough was enough and requested to be removed from all specialty services. He felt he could succeed with out them. We were warned by school officials that he wouldn't be successful and the odds were against him. Well, I am pleased to say that he proved them wrong. Boy, he started getting actively involved, continuous runs with the honor roll, became the president over several student groups, was a volunteer and tutor for a reading group at the middle school, track star, participant in future leaders national club, sat on the school district's board to discuss the all over educational concepts for K to 12 grades, and the list goes on. He will go on to Virginia State University, majoring in Business and Accounting. My son told us a long time ago that he believe that he can and my God, He Did! This is my salute to Him, ULYSSES STEVEN KNIGHT, III... You have truly inspired me!

Help Prevent New IRS Regulations Against Small Businesses

I am a member of the National Small Business Association. I wanted to share this recent article with all of you and request your assistance in preventing this from happening. Please review and submit your responses by hitting the Click here.

Your lawmakers are considering implementing a provision that would increase regulatory and compliance costs on small business. The proposal creates a brand new IRS information reporting requirements that would require credit card and debit card companies as well as banks and financial institutions to report to the IRS each year your total credit card, debit card and electronic payment transactions.

These companies would be required to verify your taxpayer identification number. If they are unable to do so, the credit/debit card company will withhold 28 percent of your total sales and send it to the IRS until accurate information is provided. Once your information is verified, they will be required to send a form to the IRS and to you, the business owner, reporting your total transactions for the year. The return will include the name and address of each participating merchant that was reimbursed over the previous year for electronic payment and the amount of each payment. Each small business--You--will be responsible for accurately accounting for these transactions on your tax returns.

The Senate Finance Committee is seeking small-business comments on how this payment reporting may affect the tax gap, as well as to determine whether increased reporting requirements would unfairly burden merchant businesses or banks. Your input is crucial.
