Plans have been submitted by the owners of the campground at the northwest corner of Alternate A1A and Hood Road in Palm Beach Gardens for a possible new development.  The West Palm Beach-based Live Oak Land Hood Road LLC, show a 46,000-square-foot Publix with a pharmacy on the 10-acre parcel. The parcel is beside the Evergrene community which has mixed emotions concerning the project.  With and additional  two retail stores, each about 8,000 square feet and fronting Hood Road, the city's planning and zoning board Jan. 13 unanimously recommended approval. The 2009 Quality Counts: Portrait of a Population report, published annually by Education Week gave Florida the 10th highest education ranking in the United States. Florida's ranking has risen significantly in the past few years, up from 14th in 2007 and 31st in 2006.  The reports ranks states in six categories including, Chance for Success; Transitions and Alignment; School Finance; K-12 Achievement; Standards, Assessments, and Accountability; and the Teaching Profession. Egret Landing in Jupiter to get mast arm traffic signal - 01/07/09 12:38 PM
Palm Beach County commissioners have reached agreement with the Town of Jupiter and Egret Landing Home Owners Association for the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Indian Creek Parkway and Egret Landing Boulevard.  However, Egret Landing wants a mast arm that would cost $26,000.  The county wanted to install a span wire traffic signal; Egret Landing said no, for two reasons:  Mast arm traffic signals are more resistant to storm damage than span wire traffic signals, and the span wire pole was placed in front of the community's entrance sign.  Commissioners had budgeted $50,000 for the job.  However, … (0 comments)

Palm Beach County receives $500,000 grant for DuBois Park in Jupiter Florida - 01/02/09 07:08 AM

The Palm Beach County Commissioners have accepted a $500,000 Florida Boating Improvement Program grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  The money will be used for DuBois Park docks and shoreline stabilization.  Located just south of the Jupiter inlet and adjacent to Carlin Park in Jupiter, the total Dubois Park Marina project is currently estimated at $3.6 million, and includes:  Rebuild slips for 24 vessels along the peninsula, renovate the existing dock slips at Zeke's Marina, repair the existing single concrete boat ramp, install rip-rap for shoreline stabilization, create a one-acre snorkeling area.

Jupiter Lighthouse receives New Federal Designation
This past month the Jupiter Inlet Natural Area that includes the lighthouse and its surrounding 120 acres became part of the new federal conservation system. This is the first site on the East Coast to receive the designation. The lighthouse that has guided ships since 1860 is one of my most favorite places to spend a afternoon climbing the stairway to overlook some of the most beautiful views of the mainland and Atlantic Ocean.
