Florida residents are now eligible for a free shoreline fishing license beginning July 1, when purchased at a service center. Shoreline fishing licenses for Florida residents to catch saltwater fish from the shore or a structure affixed to shore (e.g. dock or pier) cost $9.00 last year. The Florida Legislature repealed the $9.00 shoreline fishing license fee during this past Legislation Session.

Good news! Florida's Back-to-School Sales Tax "Holiday" is back. The tax break failed to pass the Legislature the last two years due to budget deficits. The state still faces serious budget deficits. As a result, this year's holiday will only be three days, August 13 - 15, 2010. Books, clothing, footwear, wallets and book bags costing less than $50 and school supplies priced at less than $10 will be tax-free during the tax free holiday. Florida's sales of existing homes increased in June, bucking a national trend of declining purchases blamed on the end of the home buyer tax credit.
Florida statewide the number of single-family homes sold grew 10 percent compared to May and 17 percent over June of last year, according to data released this morning by Florida Realtors. Palm Beach County sales rose 23 percent from May and 27 percent compared to the same time in 2009.

The Florida Legislature meets in special session this week to consider placing a constitutional amendment banning offshore oil drilling on the November ballot. But the session starting Tuesday, July 29th is also a fight between the Republican-dominated Legislature and Gov. Charlie Crist. Today the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 5114, the Flood Insurance Reform Priorities Act of 2010, among the key elements of the bill  is the extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to September 30, 2015.  The actions of the House are an important step toward enacting meaningful reform for the Flood Insurance Program and ending the uncertainty of stop-gap measures that have been keeping the program in place.  NAR has been actively seeking NFIP reform since 2008.

On July 10th from 6:30 to 9:30 P,M. the Re-Light the Light celebration will take place at The Jupiter Lighthouse to commemorating the first lighting of the beacon 150 years ago. The U.S. Senate passed two bills last evening previously passed by the House. Both bills still need President Obama's signature to become law, but that's expected to happen quickly.
Homebuyer tax credit The Senate passed HR 5623, which extends the mandatory closing date to qualify for the homebuyer tax credit. The contract deadline does not change - homebuyers must have a contract signed by April 30, 2010 (an exception for active duty military) - but the previous closing deadline of June 30, 2010, has been extended to Sept. 30, 2010.
