missouri: Mansfield, Missouri - Eco-friendly Horse Properties Part 2 - 06/22/07 03:19 AM
janeAnne's comments and ideas this morning on her post to the Eco All Stars HORSE and HOME, have given me inspiration to share how we do this on a small scale that can be adjusted to fit most any budget and fit most any land size. We have a small property -- just over three acres. All of that isn't available for use due to slopes, woods, etc. So, what do we do to make comfortable, loved horses and benefit the property
The Ozarks offers a climate and geography to appeal to the small property owner.  Horses are extremely popular.  The World Headquarters of the … (7 comments)

missouri: Straw bale Construction in Missouri -- Come again? - 05/05/07 05:46 PM

Yes, we did -- if this graphic  is any example of the structure selected. Straw or hay construction is not a new concept. In this country, it was an idea born of necessity. People were moving to the midwest to settle in the plains -- settle meaning they needed appurtenances to the homestead to provide shelter from the elements. In the plains, there wasn't adequate timber to build wood structures. In some midwest areas the black soil and clay soil made blocks of sod or dug out of a hillside as a manmade cave. In the sandy soils of Nebraska, these options … (28 comments)

missouri: Straw Bale Construction in Missouri with Top of the Ozarks R C & D - 05/01/07 05:31 AM
In the spring of 2006, hard work on the part of the members of the Top of The Ozarks Resource Conservation and Development Council came to fruition. A project was launched in partnership with HUD and Missouri State University Extension to promote affordable housing utilizing a presently unused resource -- straw from fescue.

The plan was to inform residents of two counties in Missouri, Ozark County and Douglas County about the benefits of strawbale construction. Each house would be built by the homeowner, utilizing their own labor, donated and hired labor, under the council of a specialist hired by Top of … (5 comments)

missouri: Freeze Out Church Corner near Mansfield, Missouri - 04/25/07 08:18 AM
One evening a couple summers ago, we stopped by the Town Square at Mansfield, Missouri, to enjoy a music evening. When we parked, we were right next to an elderly gentleman who is a Mansfield native staying in his vehicle while listening to the music. We never got our lawn chairs to the Square because we got to visiting with this gentleman.
He knew so much about the community and made it all terrifically interesting. The one little item we liked the best was about Freeze Out and Freeze Out Church. It seems that our road -- Rock Road (well and appropriately … (0 comments)

missouri: Desk Exercises for My Benefit wth the Songbirds at Mansfield, Missouri - 04/25/07 08:03 AM
An early rule I read about for monitor viewing was "Every 20 minutes, Look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds". This is supposed to ease the strain on your eyes from staring at the intriguing and interesting monitor.
I have acquired some helpers outside my office window. If you call me, sometimes you can hear them. At a sunflower feeder, a thistle seed feeder and a syrup feeder intended for orioles, but claimed by hummers, all among the apple blossoms and lilacs, I have feathered friends to be the Something to Look at. Cardinals, Blue Jays, Goldfinches, House finchs, mockingbird, … (3 comments)

missouri: Interpreting the Language of Pennies in Missouri - 04/18/07 06:52 AM
"Okay, honey, the invoice for 235 widgets was just paid!  We're rich!"  Is that the way your business works?  Do you know what each penny of cash or income or value can do for you.  Or what that nickel misspent can do to you?   Pennies and nickels may be tuning it a little to the fine side, but with exaggeration, we get your attention.
The Missouri Small Business Development Center is making another opportunity for businesses to learn how to analyze what is going on at their place and use that information to the benefit of the business.

missouri: Ozarks Spring, Mansfield, Missouri - 3 - 03/31/07 11:41 AM
Someone with a loving hand set shrubs, trees and bulbs so that we have a continuous rotation of something blooming.
The first beauties include the jonquils and the dramatically fragrant hyacinths.  The tulips are peeping out here and there, literally scattered about for bright surprises.
Wild flowers like violets and dutchman's britches (bleeding heart) compete for the tiny view. The FUCHIA of the redbud trees
will be repeated later in the mimosa and double rose of sharon. The peach tree has safely bloomed with no damaging frost or hail. The apples are preparing to imitate that blossom performance.
While the redbuds have … (0 comments)

missouri: Spring in Mansfield, Missouri -2 - 03/31/07 11:14 AM
Mansfield began Spring and Easter Holiday celebrations today with an Easter Egg Hunt on the Town Square. The Chamber of Commerce made a deal with the Easter Bunny for 2000 eggs, some with a candy inside and some with a toy inside. A New Chapter Book Store, Estrada's Mexican Restaurant, Xanadu Games and Engrave-a-Crete sponsored over 160 prize eggs. There were books, food, games and dollar bills.
The plans have been going on for months. The eggs have been in my dining room since January. The gift certificates and notes have been printed out and made ready. Yesterday, I got caught … (0 comments)

missouri: Spring in the Ozarks --There's a Mole in the Sassafras and a Mouse in the Glue - 03/13/07 07:29 AM
Duke, (airdale) has been rototilling the garden and the green space around it where he can reach in pursuit of moles. He vern gets them, and does more damage to the ground than the dreaded armadillos. Being the family dog, he gets a bit of a pass.
Today, there is mole activity in the row of baby sassafras trees that DH is nurturing I hope they don't hurt the trees. If Duke had two more feet of cable there would be no moles, no sassafras and then perhaps, no Duke. In an effort to ease his anxiety, I moved my pinwheel mole … (1 comments)

missouri: Technology -- Take your computer into the Daylight (Savings Time) - 02/24/07 05:31 AM
If you bought a new computer with Windows VISTA installed, the March date for daylight savings time to take over is covered.
Systems using Windows XP and 2003 systems can go to Microsoft to get a patch which will set your machine up to work with the new dates. If you have automatic notices for downloads, this patch has already come to you. Automatic downloads and install have it working for you already.
I do not care for automatic downloads and install, but when I was snooping around about information on Vista, somehow, my computer got switched over to automatic anyway. … (0 comments)

missouri: Lights Out and Emergency Plans - 02/05/07 01:32 PM
Do you have a daily plan?  Years ago, during Iowa's tornado season, I kept a kerosene lamp in the basement and extra jackets and old shoes in a box by the basement door.  We seemed to have to run down there at least once a week.  But, we didn't have a weather plan as such.  Because of a state campaign, we did have a fire or other emergency plan.  We lived upstairs, but I had three serious little kids who "got it" -- if Mom says" "Go" you all stick together to get down those outside stairs and head across the … (2 comments)

missouri: Winter in the Ozarks has that Midwestern Flavor - 02/02/07 11:57 AM
Winter-Winter-Winter.  Please accept my concerns for the people in Florida who are suffering through the storms.
When I lived in Wyoming, the dry, cold winters were long, but we hardly ever got a school day. When the temps dipped to fifty below, we started our vehicles every few hours and went to school.  When the house water wasn't working, my sons frosted their faces hauling working water in buckets from the almost frozen river, but everyone still went to school.  When we had icy roads, we drove with great care.  A neighbor who was a brand inspector often had to leave out early … (0 comments)

missouri: Mansfield, Missouri and Rocky Ridge Farm equals Little House on the Prairie - 12/08/06 12:28 PM
Mansfield, Missouri is the brainchild of the 19th century railroad industry.  Mining, timber and agriculture offered product for the new rail system.
Apples from Rocky Ridge Farm were shipped on the early railroad.  But, the most important product from the Farm was the Little House series of books.  You see, Rocky Ridge Farm was the last home of Laura Ingalls Wilder.   She and her husband, Almanzo, with their little daughter Rose moved to Mansfield in 1895.  They farmed, raising apples, and became part of the community.
When the family was living in South Dakota, early in the marriage, they suffered a … (1 comments)
