Most Attorneys Make you Wait

I just wrote a post about having to wait on doctors and attorneys, but I wanted to sing the praises on Lancaster and Trotter in Charlotte, NC. I have been using them for several years and very seldom had to spend more than 20 minutes in the office for a closing.

My paperwork is always prepared and waiting the the closing. The attorney is always prompt and prepared for most questions. I wish all my attorneys were like this. We buy houses all over the country but don't attend most closings. Many times we don't receive our documents until the DAY OF CLOSING.

Raymond Lancaster and Will Trotter always have my stuff ready and when I'm not attending a closing, I have my documents in time to sign and return before closing.

If you're every in Charlotte, NC, they are a great company to use.

Doctors - Hurry up and Wait

Why do we always have to wait at doctor's offices?

When a client comes to my office for a 10am appointment, I'm prepared to meet them. If I"m meeting a client for a 5PM showing, I better be on time. If I keep my client waiting, they find a new agent.

If this is true, why do we accept them from other professionals?

MY 1PM closing never happens on time and my 10AM doctors appointment never starts until 10:30 or 11:00. Yet, instead of finding a new doctor, I put up with it because I know the next doctor or attorney will be just as bad or worse.

Why to we subject ourselves to this?

I've received many comments on my post about Investing in Vehicles, like real estate.

I have several classic cars and drive them every day. The greatest question seems to be "Don't they depreciate like any over car?" And the answer is "Yes" if you drive your classic car every day, it may depreciate, but it will not depreciate as quick as your brand new BMW or SAAB.

The major difference is this:

1. If I drive my BMW for five years, no amount of money will make it worth what I paid.

2. If I drive my classic Mustang or GTO for the same time, I can restore it and exceed the price I paid because the cars appreciate.

If you take relative good care of your classic car, you can fully restore it (after 100,000 miles) for a few thousand dollars. New Paint, New Carpet, Engine Rebuild and you've get a car that has gone up in value while driving it.

"What about comfort?" is another question.

My 1964.5 Mustang convertible has A/C, Power Windows, Independent Susp and all teh comforts of a modern car ... and it looks good.

Just a thought ...

Everyday Investing

We are all investors, whether it's a million dollar house or a used car. These are investments. Some increase in value and some decease. We hope the scales tip to the positive at the end of the day. Here is a thought to keep in mind when making your next purchase.

Would you buy a house if you knew it was going to go down in value?

Would you buy stock if you knew the value would drop?

Would you invest in something you KNEW was going down in value?

Of course you would. In fact, you already have. You will do it again. Chances are, you’ll do it within the next two years. You think I’m crazy?

Cars!!!

We buy them knowing they decrease in value and there isn’t much we can do about it, right? WRONG!

I have several cars which increase in value every year. Why should our cars be any different from our other investments? I collect antique cars and have two classic mustangs; a 64.5 Convertible and a 65 Hardtop. The later was purchased 17 years ago for $2000. The convertible was considerably more but still a good deal. Unlike any new car, these cars do better than “hold their value.” They increase.

Most people say “Who wants to drive an old uncomfortable car?” But my answer is this. Your BMW cost $30K. If you spent that on a classic, you could have 4-wheel independent suspension, a/c, power everything and all the comforts of a new car. You can even get the new car small, in a can. And … it would increase in value.

I drive my classics every day. In five years, they will need paint, reupholstery, new carpet and engine work, but so will the BMW. The difference is this. If I spend $5000 fixing my BMW, it’s not worth any more than the beat up version. If I spend $5000 on my mustang, I have a valuable car.

New Office After Breakin and Vandalism

Office Renovations

In early November our office was broken into and vandalized by a tenant. More than $150,000 in damage was done and it's taken three months to complete most of the work. Water lines were cut, computers were destroyed and we've lost 90 days of productivity.

I found out only too late that insurance companies are not in the business of paying claims, only collecting fees.

Tomorrow morning I am meeting with my adjuster, for what I hope is the last time. We still have not received the funds and this has crippled our company. In fact it has put several employees into other jobs because they couldn't wait for us.

The moral is this: Check the payment record of your insurance company before you continue as a client. Demand to see how many claims they have denied and the average length of time it takes them to pay a claim. 90 days has almost bankrupt our company and I'd hate to see this happen to anyone else.

I have placed a several properties on Active Rain, in the past. I've even gotten some responses from the ads. No sales, but some questions have come in.

Getting Recognized on Google

Who says "New sites don't rank on Google."?

Whoever it was is wrong. www.BlitherNet.com has been up for less than 48 hours and the site appears on Google. In fact I found several links to the site on the first page; including a link to the profile of an Active Rain user and the second member of BlitherNet.

I have found two of my blogs on Google and I expect it will only get better.

To Spoil or Not to Spoil

Spoiled Little Ones

By the time my son was 10 years old, I could sleep late because he woke himself up for school, fixed his lunch and a bowl of cereal for him and his sister. He had already been washing his clothes for a year (although we did have a few colored whites). I woke up in time to get dressed and drive him to school. In SC he could start driving at 15 and took his sister to school too. Since then I've been able to sleep late most days (the blessing of working for yourself). Everyone tells my wife that we've done a great job with the kids, and of course I must agree.

Enter My New Dog!!!

I have a new Miniature Pincher (4 Mo Old) and she is sleeping beside me. In fact, BETWEEN me and my wife. When I take a shower she lays outside the shower door. If I take a bath, she cries to lays on the seat beside the tub. She goes to work with me. They've even gotten used to her at the local stores (Small towns are nice - Clover, SC Pop. 6000). She rides on my lap in the car. She sits ON my desk, at the office. I admit, she's a little spoiled, but I didn't realize how spoiled until today.

My mother asked to watch her while I left and I reluctantly agreed. Mother said "She'll be fine." and I left; wondering how long she'd cry.

Shortly after leaving the first call came in. She wouldn’t stop crying. After an hour she was still "yelping" and "crying." It took two hours for me to get back and when I walked up the sidewalk I could hear her. She was sitting on mother's lap sounding like a wounded cow. It was pitiful and when she saw me, she proceeded to nip mom's hand and jump down. Then she started barking AT ME, as if to scold me for leaving her.

My daughter chastised me by telling everyone in the store the I loved the dog more than her, because I didn't spoil her that bad when she was a child.
