John D. Geanakoplos a professor of economics at Yale and a partner in a hedge fund that trades in mortgage securities, offers a another alternative to foreclosure. In his Op-Ed piece Mortage Justice Is Blind for today's New York Times, he discusses what used to be the parties to a mortgage and how the ability to rework a mortgage was more approachable. However, with securitization of mortgages, the dynamics of the relationship has changed and so has the ability to rework mortgage loans. Does Anybody Have A Clue? - 10/26/08 08:51 AM
I have been saying for months that all of the foreclosures are not due to the mortgage meltdown. There are far more homeowners who have had their homes for nearly fifteen years who have fallen victim to the economy.
Companies are downsizing if not going out of business and that has a direct impact on one's ability to meet financial obligations. The New York Times article Spending Stalls and Businesses Slash U.S. Jobs provides a perfect illustration of what is happening. Over the last two weeks Merck, Yahoo, General Electric, Xerox, Pratt & Whitney, Goldman Sachs, Whirlpool, Bank of America, Alcoa, Coca-Cola, … (9 comments)

Homeowner's Fall "To Do List" - 10/19/08 11:48 AM
As the foliage continues its journey of ever changing hues and the chill in the air lingers through both day and night, I am reminded of the chores that are ahead of me in preparation for the next season.
That chill in the air reminds me of the importance of ensuring the seals on the storm windows and the weather stripping around the doors are adequate to keep the warmth in and the cold out.
The annual cleaning of air ducts will mitigate the build of more mold spores and dust, helping to create better air quality.
There is still time … (0 comments)

OPEC In A Pinch - A Plum For The Economy And Real Estate - 10/17/08 11:55 AM
Escalating oil prices have helped to wreak havoc with our economy. From the cost of gas at the pumps to the cost of goods and services, Americans have seen a huge jump in the cost of living expense.
However, there should be some reprieve around the corner. The high prices have resulted in a tightening of the belt and thereby forcing the price of oil down, down below $70 per barrel. Americans and others around the world who are oil dependent have taken drastic measures to cut back in the wake of global financial challenges.
This bodes well in the short … (0 comments)

Warren Buffett Has Spoken! - 10/17/08 10:29 AM
I was reading the Opinion Page of The New York Times today and came across an opinion entitled Buy American. I Am and low and behold it was penned by none other than Warren Buffett. Clearly Mr. Buffett was referencing the purchase of stocks, given the condition of the economy and the rock bottom prices on shares.
The most salient point for me was; A simple rule dictates my buying: Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. And most certainly, fear is now widespread, gripping even seasoned investors. To be sure, investors are right to … (0 comments)

A Call To Action - 10/12/08 06:09 AM
The people on main street are looking to Washington to provide the lead on how best to regain our financial footing as a Nation. The trouble is that Washington needs help. The reality is that we are not alone in this quagmire. A global economy hitting the skids needs a concerted global effort for regaining stability.
There was no better example of this than when Iceland seized control of its three major banking institutions that were faltering. To make matters worse, Iceland appeared to be favoring its citizens over foreigners when it came to insuring deposits. Clearly such an approach wreaks havoc … (1 comments)

The month of October is Fire Prevention Month. This is an opportunity to focus on preparedness to address fire hazards. In 2005, 146,400 house fires started in the kitchen with unattended stoves. In many instances there was a loss of life.
As homeowners face mounting costs for home maintenance, there is growing concern that the cost of fuel will result in people seeking alternative means to heat homes. Kerosene heaters, space heater and the like can be dangerous if used improperly.

However, for the people on main street, not much has changed. In a number of instances due to circumstances beyond their control, many still find their backs against a wall with no way out. They continue to struggle silently with financial burdens that threaten their way of life. far too many were barely making it before the national crisis.
