Photo Friday - Stephanotis
One of my all time favorite summer bloomers is the Stephanotis. The flower is commonly referred to as the wedding flower. It's long stems have numerous clusters and is very showy. It is highly fragrant and the flower itself is thick and wax like. It blooms in clusters ranging from 5 to 7 flower brackets and its foilage is dark and dense. I raise mine in a pedestal planter with a climbing lattice as it likes to throw out numerous shoots that will wrap around just about anything it comes in contact with. This is a relative … (12 comments)

William Doing His Thing!

A friend of mine sent me a photo of me taking photos at the San Diego Zoo this past September. When I am out taking photos, I am burdened down with 2 cameras, lenses and at least a monopod if not a full tripod. The backpack really distributes and lightens the load. The photo I took here was sort of special for me since I had never recalled seeing all the Meerkats asleep at one time. There was no sentry on duty this day as you can see well into their compound. Every single one was … (34 comments)

The Many Faces You May Encounter When Buying A Home In San Diego
Buying a home in San Diego has many special benefits. Often when relocating to a new city, a family may not know very many of the faces that will great them in their new city. To make sure our families feel at home the moment they move here, we make sure that they have the opportunity to see many familiar faces.
So what is the natural human reaction to meeting a familiar face ? It makes you smile. And San Diego provides many welcoming smiles for our new … (57 comments)

All Is A Flutter In Butterfly Jungle !

Yours truly turned into a kid. Butterfly Jungle opened in San Diego Wild Animal Safari park April 9th. When I received my invitation, it came with a reminder that I needed to register  for a time slot since there were going to be crowds and the assigned time passes would  be in 15 minute intervals.
When I arrived at the park the parking lot was full up and on a weekday no less. Fearing I wouldn't be able to get as many photos in that limited time, I knew I needed to … (116 comments)

Photography | Clouds

What are clouds and why are they interesting? Some of the cloud formations here in Southern California are interesting to  understand specially where they occur. I went on to Wikipedia and searched cloud formations and was somewhat overwhelmed with all that is there.

These types of clouds have names  beyond cumulus and cirrus being about the only two I could name. It seems besides the unusual patterns we observe when staring at them, there is a lot of science taking place.

I enjoy capturing cloud formation photos for the intensity and patterns often created. But … (43 comments)

La Jolla Coastline

While looking through the remaining book stock of a bookstore that is closing in my neighborhood, I noticed a book on the history of La Jolla. I picked it up and I saw a photo that looked very familiar. At least from the perspective that it was taken. When I went to my photo files, there it was looking almost the same as I had realled it in the book. The photo in the book was taken decades ago and was in black and white but this coastline photo was unmistakable.
What was telling was that … (26 comments)

San Diego Real Estate | Downtown East Village

Bursting into life just a few years ago, East Village is one of San Diego's fastest growing neighborhoods. Home to the San Diego Convention center and San Diego major league baseball park, it recently enjoyed the opening of one of the worlds largest Pedestrian suspension bridges linking the Padres Petco ballpark to the San Diego Bay and Convention Center.
Plans for the Convention Center expansion include a rooftop park and another hotel. But just a few years ago, this area was a warehouse district that had fallen into serious blight. The transformation … (24 comments)

Animals at the San Diego Zoo Speak Up!

One of the  more important lessons in life we can learn the easiest is that everything is relative and is mostly judged from your own perspective. If this scene above was actually happening, it would of course be fun to see life through their eyes and understand how it could be true that it is the little things in life that help create our sense of well being!

A Daddy's Love | Kodak Moment

Being blessed to be a part of a loving extended family, there can surely be no greater love than this Daddy's love of his new son. This captured Kodak Moment took place in 2008 at a pre-Christmas family gathering on the Pier in Newport Beach, Ca. This first time Daddy, holding his new son Issac, as he is introduced for the first time to family members, demonstrated to me a love that was deep and profound.
What I saw in this captured special moment is perhaps one of the most important aspects in all … (23 comments)

San Diego's Mengei International Museum
While attending our December Nights Celebration last night I had the good fortune to be able to visit one of our wonderful museums that I have not spent nearly enough time in, the Mengei International Museum. This is truly one of San Diego's best treasures. The museum inside is beautiful in it's simple contemporary style and featured so many wonderful exhibits.
Below is a small portion of the Zandra Rhodes Dress collection. I had my monopod in hand to help steady the camera and experimented with different settings to create some marvelous shadows and lighting, without … (22 comments)

What May Be  Perfectly Clear In Real Estate As Well As In Nature is Not Always Obvious in Either.

Take for instance the San Diego Real Estate Market. The numbers ( both home sales and home values) are improving and have been almost consistently for over a year despite the continued tough " economic" conditions that exist. Interest rates are seriously lower, inventory has increased giving a wide range of selections and opportunities and price points, yet with the general improvement, many buyers seem stuck in an economic quagmire, awaiting for some unknown change that has not been clearly defined.

San Diego Fishing Harbor on Point Loma

One of the many beautiful sights in San Diego are it's many harbors. This is one of the premier fishing harbors where some of the deep sea fishing tours originate. With views to the downtown, not a bad place to hang out.

I ventured into one of the wonderful fishing supply stores, Fisherman's Landing on the boardwalk and I was totally amazed with the place. I never saw so much in the way of lures and fishing tackle, rods and reels, clothing, you name it, they had it.  As I looked in … (26 comments)

william johnson photography: Stephanotis, What's With the Seed Pods? - 09/15/10 12:47 PM
Stephanotis
A relative to the Jasmine flower, the Stephanotis is the fragrant and waxy petaled flower often found in wedding arrangements. It was nicknamed Bridal Veil , I guess for that reason. But many others know of it as, Madagascar Jasmine. I love this plant for it's abundant summer flowers and the fragrance is out of this world. I have been very fortunate that this plant has thrown out many seed pods over the last couple years. When the pod matures and splits open, it has many many seeds that have a  silky plume of white hairs, attached to one end for allowing … (32 comments)

william johnson photography: Tutorial: Editing a Poor Photo and Creating an Accpetable Image Using Photo Editing Tools. - 09/06/10 06:55 PM
Safari Park  in San Diego is a treasure trove of photographic opportunities but it also has barriers that can discourage even the best of Photographers. I went there this evening to try and capture some of the photos that alluded me on my last visit.
The Tiger Country is one of those areas that when the tigers are visible, they are behind heavy wire fences. The holes are too close together to focus a lens through so if you can get something even reasonable, there may be hope.
This first photo was the sharpest I could get using manual focus with … (49 comments)

San Diego Festival of Sail
I attended the Festival of Sail today here in San Diego. The event was sponsored by the Port of San Diego and the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
It was a warm day at the Bay today but there was so much to see and experience that I soon forgot about how warm it was. At least until I went down below deck 2 levels.  As I ventured through the various ships in port, once again, I was so impressed with how our fine city puts on a festival like this.
I hope you will enjoy … (52 comments)

Photography | Capturing the World Around You | A Most Unusual Bird

This Bird hails from Australia and is called the Tawny Frogmouth. I discovered him while on my photography safari at Safari Park in San Diego. Most people would guess that this is an owl but it is not. It has a mouth shaped much like a frog, thus the name. You will notice that they have strong yellow eyes and a sharp pointed beak with a hook at the end of it. Being insectivorous, meaning that they live primarily live on insects , they also occasionally eat small prey … (47 comments)

Photography | Capturing the World Around You
Here are some little known facts about the Giraffes that are found at our Safari Park here in San Diego.
There is only one species of the Giraffe, though there are 9 different sub-species. One of the more rare of the subspecies is colored almost black. The Species name is quite interesting. They were called the Camel Leopard since they were first believed to be a cross of the leopard and the camel. The species name is camelopardalis.  ( It is an easy one to remember and you will sound like a genius when … (19 comments)

Smile, It's Friday Rainers

You see a long a time ago when the Earth was green, God had Brother Noah round up all the animals, two by two, just thinking about our great San Diego Zoo.
He collected these animals two by two; to make sure they were secure for this wonderful Zoo.
He gave us some Green Alligators and Long Neck Geese ( Egret) ; Some Humpy Back Camels  and Some Chimpanzees; Some Rats and Cats     and Elephants but sure as your're born, San Diego's Zoo has no Unicorn.    Here's why.
