Waco, There's a New Buffet in Town--Update 05/11/08

Wacoans , we often see Restaurants come and go. Some of the best have been here forever and will probably stick around for a long time. But sometimes, even our favorites disappear from our great city with us all scratching our heads as to why.

Here's a little gem that my family just stumbled upon and is probably worth a visit if you are a fan of Asian Cuisine especially in the Buffet style. Located near Peter Piper Pizza on the Corner of Valley Mills and Waco Drive and right near my office, "BEST BUFFET" offers a tasty variety of Asian Buffet along with a Mongolian Grill and Sushi Buffet.

The cost is very reasonable at only $5.29 for adults and they are open 7 days a week.

My Husband, Daughter and her friend visited today and really enjoyed eating here. Told me it was very good. So I will be paying a visit myself next time I am in the mood for Asian Food. Will come back here with an update on my opinion after I've tried it myself.

UPDATE: My visit to "Best Buffet". Liked the Asian inspired atmosphere. Funny thing, it kind of reminded me of a good Chinese Restaurant I used to visit in of all places, Germany. Dinner pricing is $8.25 per adult.

But to the food...I am not a huge Asian Buffet fan to start with, but I found this Buffet to be good. I really liked the Honey Chicken and the Sesame Chicken. The Honey Chicken was this wonderful flavor of buttery yet crispy battered chicken with a bit of sweet honey. The white rice was cooked how it should be cooked for this type of cuisine. Sticky and done just right. Enjoyed the mushrooms (great flavoring) and Jalapeño Chicken too.

Everything seemed to be fresh and there is a good variety to choose from. I found my self in love with these little cakes in all flavors. I am kind of a frosting nut.

Next time I will try the Mongolian barbeque at the back, I think I will like that probably better than buffet. This place is well is worth a try. I give it a thumbs up.

One other important note. On the door it said NO MSG. I liked it before I even walked in because of this alone. Enjoy!

DRIVER'S EDGE-- Texas and beyond...TEEN Parents LOOK!

Back in December, Roberta LaRocca - REALTOR® Las Vegas posted an article about Driver's Edge, Got Teenage Drivers?? Get Drivers Edge! A great overview and personal testimonial to the course.

I learned about this myself a few years back from an ad on TV I believe and was convinced at that time, it was a great program for teen drivers.

I wanted my oldest son to attend, but he never got the chance. Well today, at Texas Motor Speedway, my daughter was fortunate enough to attend one of today's Driver's Edge sessions.

Unfortunately, I was unable to go with her due to other priorities, as I really wanted to witness the program for myself.

All I can tell you now is my daughter and her Dad came home with rave reviews. My daughter was very nervous (thought she was going to back out), but did get behind the wheel to practice some very important driving skills. She loved it and says she would do it again.

From everything I know and have read, this is a great program. It's well worth everyone with teen drivers to take a look. I believe they are in Houston next weekend, April 19 & 20, 2008 , but they have several stops in the US. Classes seem to fill up fast though, so don't wait. Looks like they might still have some openings as of the time I wrote this blog.

This course is FREE of charge, although they do take donations. What a fantastic deal. CHECK IT OUT!

There Goes the Neighborhood…

Well at least there goes President Bush from the Western White House from the Waco area Crawford Neighborhood.

Announced today, according to the The Dallas Morning News, Laura Bush stated that she and President Bush will be moving to Dallas after they leave the White House.

I am sure there are mixed feelings about this locally, some probably happy to see them go while others saddened to see this part of history fade. I wonder what will become of the ranch...I am sure someone already knows. And what will become of Crawford? Well less President Bush paraphernalia will be available for sure!

As the world changes, Waco and its surrounding area is no different. On we go!

The photo is taken outside one of the popular shops a couple of years ago that had many Presidential type gifts. Notice the CUTE Beanie Baby Presidential Over-sized Bear!

A friend of mine just sent me an e-mail with the link to where you can get the lowest gas prices in your area. I typed in my zip code and found some interesting info. FAST.

I have no idea how accurate this is or how often it is updated, but thought it was pretty neat! This may be old info. to some of you, but this is the first time I have seen it.

This is exciting stuff...at least I think it is. I've always wanted to ride one of these and now I think I will. Although I do have some feelings of fear. Just how easy or difficult is this thing to ride? Segplay of Waco state that they are going to start tours of Downtown Waco and The Riverwalk beginning with 15 minutes of training. That tells me they aren't as easy as they look, but not impossible.

Either way, I am dying to try it. I can see me gliding over the Waco Suspension Bridge or Riverwalk Now...Oh yes, another fun adventure for me in Waco.

Waco Summer Activities for Kids

As a regular reader of the Waco Tribune Online, I just stumbled across a neat little summer resource on their website. It has a list of activities for your school aged child for this upcoming summer. Everything from dance, to bible study, to tennis, to library programs. There is a whole list of great activities and there will probably be more added as we get closer to summer. I know when my kids were small, summer activities were a big deal (still are, but in a more "teenaged like" way ;) ), and I always wanted them to enjoy their time.

Summer is getting close QUICK. It's time to set up some great activities for your kids. They will love you for it. Enjoy. Remember to take at look at the Waco Water Park too! One of my favorite spots along with the Cameron Park Zoo.

Waco homes for sale, are they selling? YES, and selling pretty well. Inventory is almost exactly the same as last month. More homes sold than last month. AND the median sold price is up a bit from last month and last year. All signs that the Waco Market is, as usual still doing OK.

One less positive difference from last year is that the number of homes sold is down a bit. But not by leaps and bounds.

I have to repeat something that really is important about the Texas Real Estate Market and more specifically the Waco Real Estate Market.

I've said this before as so many other professionals have said, REAL ESTATE IS LOCAL. In today's Waco Tribune, there was yet another article referring to the Texas and Waco Markets. Basically a recap of what I've been saying all along. "Despite national talk of doom and gloom about real estate, some in Waco are optimistic".

Basically, the article reiterriates that Waco Real Estate is good along with most of Texas. Inventory is a bit on the high side overall in Waco, but it depends very much on which part of town you are looking. Some of our fastest growing more popular areas are much more limited than others. I still find it challenging to find acceptable homes for my buyers depending on where they are looking.

Another factor in all of this is our geographical location. Waco sits right in the middle of where much growth is taking place. The latest Census findings put Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston on the top 10 list of growing metropolitan areas. Where is Waco in all that? Again, smack dab in the middle. Our physical location is prime.

Take a look back at my Waco Residential Market Reports for a look at some of the numbers. It's pretty easy to see what me and others are talking about even with the few details provided.

And most of all, if you interested in buying or selling homes in Waco or Waco's Surrounding Areas, get educated and get some help from a local Real Estate Professional who knows the market.

Not too long ago I wrote about several China Spring Restaurants. Many that I personally enjoy and frequent.

Well we have yet another neat little spot that I really like. Ms Becky's Cocina Mexican Kitchen. As I mentioned in my other blog, I am a Mexican Food Lover so having another spot to literally feed my passion is great news to me.

I love the Chicken Tacos and Rice, but there are many yummy options on the menu.

If you are not driving your own car to Waco, you may want to know other ways to get into/out and around town.

Getting TO or FROM Waco

Flying

My favorite mode of transportation in out of Waco is Waco Regional Airport. It's the most convenient method I can think of. Flights fly from Waco to connecting flights in either Houston or Dallas by means of either American Eagle or Continental Connection.

Many people choose to fly through other airports like Dallas, Houston, Killeen, Austin and San Antonio. But I find that it's not worth the hassle, not worth the lower ticket fare (if in fact it is lower). Just my personal preference. Think of the time, gas and other costs you might incur including parking and rental car fees to gage whether you will really save if you use another airport. Sure, there are always exceptions to the rules, but for me, nothing beats a plane ticket right from or to Waco. The best thing about arriving or flying out of airports is that we have several to choose from with Waco being such a centralized location.

Note: I've found the best pricing to be on the American Airlines and Continental Airlines Online sites. But as with anything, it usually does pay to shop around whether using other online resources or local Travel Agencies. I do travel probably at least twice a year by air and keep my eye on prices in a continuous maner. Fares have a tendency to change frequently, but the closer you get to your travel date, they can go up dramatically.

Train

Amtrak does have a station located in McGregor, TX. Just a few minutes away from Waco. I've never used this method, but if you prefer to go/come by Train. Make sure you look at their Website and/or call for more information if you are traveling by train.

Greyhound has a local station right in Downtown Waco on 8^th Street. Again, this is not a method I have personally used but is available to those who prefer Bus over other transportation.

So you are moving to a new place. Maybe you are moving to Waco Texas. You don't know a lot of people there or maybe you don't know anyone at all. Who do you turn to for help?

In the military, we have several good resources including Family Support Centers, assigned personal Sponsors and the like. And if you have a good sponsor, he/she will help you with everything you can imagine to help you adjust to your new home.

Now before a move, you can easily contact local Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and City Offices for Outstanding information, but personal assistance is usually not part of those information packets.

But wouldn't you like a personal sponsor like those that assist each other during military moves? Personal assistance from someone that is in touch with most everything in your new place that you need information about?

One thing about most Real Estate Agents is they travel the local area in which they work on a constant and regular basis. They know the area about as well as anyone.

Most Real Estate Agents that I am in contact with and know are truly caring individuals that really want to help. Most go above and beyond and work tirelessly to assist others. So how does that help you? If you are moving to a new location and are looking for a new home, and even need to sell your old location home too, a Realtor® is in a fantastic position to help you with both sides.

For example, I can help you market and sell your home in Waco and at the same time help to find you a good Real Estate Agent that will assist you with finding your new home at your new location. An agent that is willing to help you get aquatinted with your new area and find answers to your questions.

Or on the opposite side, if you are relocating to the Waco area, I can help you with your questions about the area, help you purchase your new home and even help you find an agent at your current location to help you market and sell your home.

Those are simplified examples, but the assistance of a "personal sponsor" is very significant and can help take some of the stress out of your move.

Each agent will have different services to offer, so you have to really ask questions before you select someone making sure that he/she is willing to give you the assistance you need. The main thing is that you consider the assistance of someone that knows the area and is willing to help.

Time for a quick check again on the Waco Residential Market.

Inventory is up slightly and prices are down a bit compared to last year and last month. This may not be a huge surprise, but it may also not be as big of a change as you were expecting.

With all the press about the US economy and housing problems, you might think the worst. But here in Waco, you just can't ignore the fact that homes are still selling at a steady pace.

Certain parts of our area are better than others, but this is the way it has always been. No matter how you look at it, "good" homes are still selling quickly. And if you want to buy a "good" home, it's usually in your best interest to act fast.

So what do I mean by good? Same as always, Price, Location, and Condition that outshines the competition. Simple as that. But now, more than ever, these factors play a role with inventory remaining on the high side. Buyers have more homes to choose from, so your home should be strategically positioned as the "best" in its class to overcome a lost sale to the neighbor down the street.

Interest rates are still low and home choices are many. Buyers should strongly consider taking action during times like these. We cannot predict exactly what interest rates will do in the future, nor can we predict when exactly the housing market will turn around Nationwide. There is much speculation, and much well-researched data, but the biggest thing we all understand is that buyers tend to be in a better position in conditions like these.
