Clicking Your Way to Great Chemistry - 06/30/08 12:29 PM
In working with new Real Estate clients and also adding new friends from the world or even here on Active Rain it is interesting how some harmonize with you and just "click". I have been curious why this clicking happens sometimes and other times you are more neutral toward a new person or even the opposite and don't really like them? I think with our client - professional relationships there are ideal partnerships and others you just tolerate.
But with regard to the friends we pick up along the way it really is a matter of attracting people into your life who … (37 comments)

Forget Me Not - 06/29/08 03:48 PM
There's a story about some hikers at some high elevations in the mountains who got lost down a trail. It was getting cold and they couldn't find their way out and with the elements closing in on them they were goners. They came across a backpack luckily that had within it some matches, warm socks and a warm sweater, and even a diary of the owner with his last thoughts. Somehow they survived with these rudimentary items until rescuers found them. It turns out another hiker many weeks before who never was found left this backpack nobly for someone else since … (29 comments)

Greatest Real Estate Agent in the World or Bozo? - 06/29/08 12:21 PM
I need to solicit your collective opinion on these Sales Tally Boards that you find in many name brand Realtor firms. With 100% clubs, Presidents Club, Poohbah, and Exalted Poohbah clubs, based on production levels it surely follows that the Greatest Real Estate Agent in the World is the one on the top of the list. These lists are published in monthly newsletters by individual, team or group. Am I old school or maybe new school but do you find these lists annoying? It does drive salespeople to be competitive and receive recognition which is good. But I think I have been … (145 comments)

This Is Something You Can't Take Back - 06/29/08 08:37 AM
At Christmas or after a birthday celebration you can always go back to the store and exchange a present that is the wrong size or you want a different color or for that matter even get an entirely different gift. In our conversations with our business clients in speaking or writing, our friends and family, even our fellow bloggers, choice of words is important. Words are powerful!!
THIS IS SOMETHING YOU CAN'T TAKE BACK.
I read this story from another inspirational writer that I thought captured this very well:

Hamming It Up - 06/28/08 09:33 PM
I was invited to an annual field day by the Irving, TX Amateur Radio Club. This group of Ham radio enthusiasts have many events throughout the year but this one they conducted tests with the local authorities with their half million dollar mobile communications unit and checked out all systems in case a natural disaster like a tornado, flood, or hurricane should occur.
Ham radio is fascinating stuff if you don't know anyone in it. You can send voice, data, and Morse code signaling through radio waves bouncing off the ionosphere throughout the country or around the world.

How to Not Be Like Mike - 06/28/08 10:13 AM
In real estate parlance you will hear many talk of keeping up with the Joneses. People at work get promotions and buy bigger houses and better cars, and they want to likewise. How superficial in life is that? But I see something far more insidious in that in life and that is trying to "be" someone else.
Motivational speaker and writer Pat Williams wrote a book about basketball great Michael Jordan. It was entitled, "How to Be Like Mike." While the premise of the book about lessons in success from a basketball star's journey had some merit to it I have always hated that … (29 comments)

Signs Of The Times - 06/27/08 10:45 AM
In reading the newspaper, watching TV, and especially reading the doom and gloom even spread by some bloggers about the doldrums of the real estate industry and that these are just the "signs of the times" I just have to say I beg to differ. As a matter of fact the signs of the times I have seen have been quite refreshing to say the least.

Roots Of Inspiration - 06/27/08 01:03 AM

In the newbie world of real estate blogging many agonize over a single post. Whether it should be all text with no pictures, or have links or jokes or misspellings or videos or no bold text, it really doesn't matter. I am a firm believer in just putting your toe in the water, and then slowly getting yourself fully wet.
People have asked me where I get my inspiration from? To me at least, that is an easy question to answer. I get my inspiration from YOU.

Are You Walking Through Fields of Gold? - 06/26/08 12:49 PM
This time of year a handful of REALTORS and many buyers and sellers plan vacations for the summer months. It is a tremendous reminder to us all that life is about "moments." Are you
        WALKING THROUGH FIELDS OF GOLD?
What I mean by that is life is so much about the "good memories" that we can create. Look at vacations. You plan them. Part of them go as planned and the even more fun part becomes the unexpected parts. That extra sightseeing tour, that unexplored road you travel down. Time is very swift, especially with children growing up. Create those … (21 comments)

Overcoming Your Blind Spots - 06/25/08 01:37 PM
How many Psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb ? - Just one. But the bulb has to really WANT to change.
Change is VERY HARD. Don't fool yourself in this area. With Realtors at our office, some video tape their listing presentation with a coach to evaluate their own nuances of their pitch. Do they mumble? Are they organized? Do they look professional? Do they have a smile in their voice?
If you have ever listened to presentations from alcoholics or members of their family where they have battled this affliction, all of them say you have to want … (43 comments)

Wall of Windows Reveal a Secret to Blogging - 06/25/08 10:13 AM
REALTORS and Stagers alike have presented homes that have family rooms with a
          WALL OF WINDOWS.
If you think of real estate blog writing as you sitting in this room of windows with everyone in your audience, consumer and members together viewing in, it is revealing.
Coming from someone who has now written several hundred blog articles (crossing 400 recently) it has been very enlightening to me. Sure, we impart knowledge or our thoughts of the day to our readers. But the gem of the benefit I have found are the insightful comments that come back from the collective wisdom of whom is reading what you … (80 comments)

Have You Seen A Pink Elephant In The Room? - 06/24/08 08:59 PM
One of my favorite U.S. Presidents after Abraham Lincoln has to be Theodore Roosevelt. Although late 19th and early 20th century was his time in the sun, he could teach us a thing or two today.
How about getting through a negotiation? How about getting to the point and clearing through the clutter?
There is a term in communication where everyone talks around a problem. You can see it in real estate where parties to a transaction don't really find out what the other wants. In life, people can dance around marital problems, talking about finances with elderly parents, the birds … (20 comments)

Rise and Shine with a Smile - 06/24/08 12:19 AM

To Be or Not To Be Organized? - 06/20/08 07:35 PM
I've got to admit it. Touring some people's homes impresses me. I don't know if it is the lady of the house, the man, or both, but some people have their houses neat as pins. Maybe it is from their REALTOR'S or Stager's advice.
Which begs the question,
TO BE OR NOT TO BE ORGANIZED?
I think some people are naturally organized. I am very well organized with work and slack off on the home side a bit. I think it has to do with chillin' out, and I don't need to store files for seven years. The fellas in … (42 comments)

Then one pointed out to me that there were many hard working REALTORS and despite all the hard work, at times due to down economic cycles, it could be a tough go of it certain years. Now I really felt bad.

The Road to Discovery - 06/19/08 04:03 PM
In looking at Internet search by buyers for homes you would think it would be easier. Plug the parameters in and BAM, there is your home. Who needs REALTORS? But somehow the reality of the search process is much more complex than that and you have to venture off on the journey and see what is real. Have You Found Yourself A Delicious Person? - 06/18/08 09:27 PM
In driving around married couple buyers as a REALTOR there are some days when you witness relationships not exactly made in heaven. I stick to the house part and refrain from the marriage counseling practice. Although I am sure some REALTORS could give classes on helping the two communicate better in this process which would help sell more homes.
I recently learned from a study that in addition to exercise, nutrition, and stress management as factors to maintain a high level of health and well-being, another factor was MORE important: SELF-REVELATION. So I pose the question:

I have been following the story in China about

Thriving In Your Rainforest - 06/16/08 02:16 PM
In the Amazon rainforest in South America all sorts of flora and fauna thrive. Big words for plants and animals. But the key word here is "thrive."
For Realtors, Stagers, and others in our industry serving consumers it is important to thrive, not just go through the motions as a professional.
In the Rainforest the elements that allow the thriving to take place include ample supplies of warmth from the sun and water from rain.
With professionals, thriving comes from preparation. And preparation comes from practice and education.

Translation: Give a little to get along. Find common ground with interests, family, work, similar tastes in music, food, or home design.

No Time Machines To Drive You To Your Old Home - 06/15/08 01:04 PM

Elsewhere in the country there are those specializing in homes dating back to the 1800's. It got me thinking though about those older homes, and in particular my boyhood home.
A few years ago I got to re-visit a boyhood home on Long Island after having been away from there for 35 years. I concluded what many say often:

While my father passed away nearly two years ago in August 2006, we both were very comfortable with the mortality of all our lives. What I mean by that is first, in relationships between a parent and a child, between spouses, or between friends, it is a safe environment. It is ok to be yourself, to be different and to make mistakes.

In Real Estate Agent stereotypes there's nothing worse than encountering the pink haired lady. This surely was from many years ago.
This was the classic agent who showed you only "her" properties. You wanted a big backyard, she showed you Master Bedrooms with red paint. You wanted a big backyard, she showed you homes with marble bathtubs. You wanted a big backyard, she showed you homes with white Jefferson Memorial style columns in the living room. Don't Let Your Horse Carriage Turn Into A Pumpkin - 06/13/08 03:07 PM
In real estate, they say there are something like 192 steps to go from contract to close. There are phrases like time is of the essence to deliver certain funds. In life, much is about time. To use it more efficiently. To make the most of it.

Life Doesn't Care, But People Do - 06/11/08 02:13 PM
In communicating in many formats with others, face to face with real estate clients, online with associates, hand written notes through the mail, telephone, email, etc. I have concluded that too often whatever circumstances people find themselves in they want to blame someone or something for it. Where they are at is judged. It must be the fault of someone. Which brings me to my observation and take on what I see that maybe they don't grasp:

Feel Your Way Through The Maze - 06/06/08 07:11 PM
Buyers of homes have much to teach us about WHY they select and settle on a particular abode. Many veteran REALTORS will say in the end the woman selects the house. I think there is truth in that.
It isn't merely that they are better at flying by the seat of the pants than their male counterpart, it is because in general they are more in tune with their feelings. They inherently have better intuition. About what is the right place to settle into. To build the nest. To have a life.

Lessons from Grandma Moses - 06/06/08 01:15 AM
I have always learned much from older people. In Real Estate they are not interested in you texting them addresses on listings. They prefer advertising in print media. A well known older person was Anna Mary Robertson, also known as the famous painter, Grandma Moses. She grew up on a farm, worked hard, had ten kids, five of whom died when they were babies. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering and making pictures on fabric.

A Place Called Forever - 06/03/08 03:00 PM
In Real Estate terms, the Realtor for life praise one heaps upon themselves, on the one hand to me, at least, reflected dedication, but on the other hand it seemed a departure from reality. Who could really be in your life forever, or was it just an old cliche, and lip service to outstanding service and strong local ties with a community?
