Do You Know The Three Wow Factors Of Life? - 07/30/08 08:11 PM
Do you know
THE THREE WOW FACTORS OF LIFE?
The first Wow involves places. It may be a place you visit on vacation, your local area, a sunset, something you see or fragrant beauty from a flower. You say Wow.
You see it with buyers when they find that special place to call home. It's a Wow house or maybe even a five Wow house. You step back and say,
     " WOW "

The second Wow in your life is the people you find that you cherish. It might be that special someone you've been looking for. … (40 comments)

A Clown Has Many Masks - 07/30/08 03:18 PM
If you are around the many individuals in the Real Estate industry as professionals that we are there is no denying that it is a "People" business. Clients, Associates, affiliated professions, all intermingle with us not to mention the sphere of influence we work. But to the degree of the depth you get to know another human being we need to be aware as the armchair psychologists that we turn into that people are very complex in many ways and

Think in the behavior between a person and their buddies at a bar yucking it up, … (32 comments)

Heroes Are Right In Your Backyard - 07/29/08 06:07 PM
Have you ever been hanging around people and looked around and wondered if any of these people were like "heroes" in your life?
THERE ARE HEROES IN YOUR LIFE.
No they don't have to wear capes and leap tall buildings at a single bound.
Heroes are more subtle than that. It's probably where we get that term unsung from. I have noticed that for me at least, my heroes are never drawing attention to themselves. My heroes make me laugh, make me cry, make me think, make me wonder where have they been my whole life?

My standard for … (43 comments)

Your Choices In Life Steer Your Boat - 07/29/08 12:55 PM
In discussing the parameters of what a buyer wants in a home it reminded me of all the other choices we make in life. The decisions we make really do impact us long term, so we should give careful consideration in areas like whom we marry, what home we buy, what job we take, what school district we live in, what food we eat.
But the hard cold reality is that life is all about choices. Think about women that work in home based offices. They are taking care of their kids and not sacrificing with day care. How about men that … (22 comments)

Say What You Need To Say - 07/28/08 09:14 PM
In writing up descriptions of houses for sale many adjectives are used like stunning, awesome, gorgeous, beautiful, etc. Words are very powerful and coupled with this I am continually aware in life how time is so short for us. These powerful words NEED to be spoken to each other too. Positive words daily. Uplifiting messages. Words and phrases that make us laugh and smile.
PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW YOU CARE.
Do not assume they know. Even if you know they know, remind them CONSTANTLY. There is nothing better to tell the people in your life that you love THAT, drum roll … (42 comments)

Some Yodas May Just Be Green with Big Ears - 07/28/08 05:08 PM
Realtors come in many shapes, sizes, personalities, temperaments, experience levels, training and life experience. Picking up a phone book and selecting one may help you select a jewel of a professional to hire, but wouldn't cutting the glamour shots out of the home magazines and pasting them to the dart board and throwing a dart work better? Sage advice is what you want in buying or selling your home. You want a Yoda type. A real Yoda. Someone like ME for example who cares about you. But know the reality:
Some Yodas May Just Be Green With Big Ears.

Dog Ate My Homework Moments In Life - 07/28/08 03:49 PM
I want you to keep the images from this post fresh in your mind because they apply to many you may work with in industry, customers, or Realtors. Just think basically that the response to YOU asking for a reason for something, or any level of accountability, the answer comes back to you like this:
          THE DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK.
Do these people actually think we are that stupid? I am talking about excuses here people for things not getting done that are promised. People hiding from you and not returning your phone calls or emails. People canceling appointments on you. People deciding … (21 comments)

Getting Rid of Your Bag Head Fans - 07/27/08 05:31 PM
If you live long enough you will find friends that you thought were your friends abandon you. In my discussions with Buyers and Sellers alike about their circle of "friends" they all agree with me on this that you need to
GET RID OF YOUR BAG HEAD FANS.
I once coached a corporate softball intramural team that lost our first nine games straight. We were in the wrong league by the way with superior competition. If anyone deserved bag head fans in the bleachers it was us. But our family and friends stuck behind the screen and cheered us on anyway. … (26 comments)

My Summer Vacation Report At A Place Called No Limit - 07/27/08 02:35 AM
In reading and writing on this social blogging network experiment that is Active Rain I often feel it will culminate one day here in the near future where a teacher will call me out from my elementary school chair in August at the start of the new school year and say, Gary, what did you learn over the past summer? I've been prepping pretty hard soaking in material each day, laughing, learning, getting posts hijacked and the like. Now that we have over 100,000 members I definitely will never get to sleep again if I hope to keep up.

If I Only Had A Brain - 07/26/08 07:27 PM
In driving fairly long distances with buyers between house showings in my area we chuckle amidst all the Realtor stories that are out there. I need to solicit from you some fresh stories of fun things you have seen in the Real Estate world along the way. They don't have to be about you but maybe something you heard.
Like Realtors using credit cards to get in side locked doors. Encountering naked couples in Master Bedrooms. Having a corner of a brick wall collapse prior to closing due to buying an as is house with foundation problems. Lately I found a … (36 comments)

Music Soothes The Savage Beast - 07/26/08 02:18 PM
In the cacophony of sounds that we are immersed in with our daily Real Estate work as well as other areas of life I have found that connecting with music is a highly rewarding experience. Like diving into the reading of a good book, or experiencing a "take me away" Calgon bubble bath moment, music has a powerful effect in connecting with our emotional side.
One of the key strengths of music I believe is "healing" our souls. Our inner being needs refreshment as much as our physical or mental sides.
"Music hath charms to soothe a savage beast, to soften … (31 comments)

Do You Believe in Coincidences? - 07/25/08 06:06 PM
I seem to have more and more strange things happen as life progresses. Like, when you think in Real Estate your opportunities for listings are drying up, another one materializes. I want to ask the question to the group
       DO YOU BELIEVE IN COINCIDENCES??
I am convinced, and have been for some time that "NOTHING" is a coincidence. I firmly did not believe this way many years ago, even though I witnessed some amazing chance events in my own life. Like these friends of my parents that showed up one day encouraging they should think about letting me attend a … (80 comments)

The Sandbox Will Just Not Be The Same - 07/25/08 04:30 PM
Many of you may know if you haven't already heard that Carnegie Mellon University professor Randy Pausch, the famed Last Lecture speaker died Friday at age 47 of pancreatic cancer. Many have seen his inspiring video, but the sandbox we call life is a little emptier today because he is no longer with us. I included the short clip of the talk in case you don't know the story.
I encourage everyone to live each day like Randy did with spirit and a life lesson I learned from him is to not give up on ANYONE! Maybe they haven't developed as far … (37 comments)

Ideas for Your Shareware Journal - 07/24/08 12:16 PM
In the early days of software products there was a category called "shareware." This was either totally free or trial software. Examples like PDF Reader, WinZip, etc. Then these free giveaway apps moved to the web and the common traits were that they were free, useful, if not invaluable.
Social Real Estate Blogging is the same way looking at in hindsight. A place like Active Rain is free and all about the sharing. It is a

We may start from our Real Estate, Stager, Inspector, Loan Officer roots topics and then branch out. Some ideas for you if … (53 comments)

Overcoming Fear In Our Lives - 07/23/08 07:28 PM
In real estate both as Agents, Stagers, and other professionals I think we can all relate some days to that famous painting of the Scream. Either the deals gone south and no pay day is in sight, or you have trepidation on a listing appointment how it might go, or you have call reluctance to call prospects for Staging, or you don't want to answer that call when you you know that Buyer is going to yell at you for something you overlooked, etc.
The best way to overcome our fears in life comes straight out of football. With my favorite … (54 comments)

It All Counts - 07/23/08 11:28 AM
In presenting ourself to others in the world via real estate blogging, our brand, our marketing, or just ourself remember
         IT ALL COUNTS.
How we talk, the tone of our voice, how we write, how we dress, how we laugh or don't laugh, our choice of words, our grooming, our presentation, our response and timing, our energy, it all counts. Why some don't get this and act unprofessional, crude, hurtful, or mean is beyond me.
That's not to say in blogging or in life we can't be silly, or tell jokes, or never take a risk, or God forbid, make mistakes. … (36 comments)

Fire Up Your Love Machine - 07/22/08 07:37 PM
I have always liked fast cars. I went through four Camaros before I ever settled into family practical mini-vans and SUVs and stll have a high end horsepower Intrepid. There's just something about going fast. Nothing like acceleration and crusing and purring on the open road.
There is a pace to our life that can be accelerated too.
WE NEED TO FIRE UP OUR LOVE MACHINES.

They Ain't Making Any More Time - 07/22/08 02:54 AM
We all live such busy lives these days. Those in real estate know this well. It can be up early, out the door, or if home officed starting working on your assignments for the day from the get go. Managing calendars is never easy. I absolutely laugh when sometimes I get triple or quadruple booked at times. What is an excellent multi-tasker to do? The Retirement Home and the Bellydancer - 07/22/08 01:28 AM
Having worked with elderly buyers it brought to mind that a study of 95 year olds were asked if they could live their life all over again what would they do differently?
The number one thing they said was that they would enjoy more "moments."
Are you seeing the "moments" in your life and stopping and enjoying them?
Even in the short while with social blogging like Active Rain I have seen many moments with friends I have encountered. Their family moments they have been kind enough to share with me, their humor, their tender touch, their teasing, their leaving behind inspirational … (23 comments)

For your real estate clients, family, friends, and acquaintances, do some soul searching on this one. If the Bat Signal comes out are you truly there for them? Service to the highest degree. You give your best. You are someone who keeps their word. You go the extra mile. You are a person of strength and conviction. You develop into a better Batman each day. My Blogging Success Secrets - 07/20/08 01:22 AM
Sometimes when you write often enough you do get ideas about another topic you would like to throw out there but then in your mind you determine that no one would really be interested. I have to credit fellow Associate and excellent Realtor from Myrtle Beach, SC Mirela Monte for encouraging me to write this one. It is entitled, "My Blogging Success Secrets."
I hesitated to write this because I don't consider myself a master blogger of the likes of a Sally Cheeseman or Jason Crouch. I don't want to tell others what to write. But Mirela said I knew enough … (136 comments)

Needing Log Cabins In Our Life - 07/19/08 01:41 PM
I humorously wrote earlier about taking an imaginary virtual trip away from our daily work efforts in the Real Estate industry. The reponses from that post fell into two camps. Those who had already enjoyed refreshment in Ocean City, NJ, Maui, getting back from Spain, planning trips to the Caribbean next month or a Christmas trip. Others (like myself) had this idea of refreshment was to happen "some day."
I hear about someday trips to Alaska, the Grand Canyon, the Big Island of Hawaii, touring the monuments and museums of Washington, D.C., and visiting Concord, NH.
We all have these figurative log cabins in our mind. We … (27 comments)

The Calling That Will Let You Find Yourself - 07/18/08 05:24 PM
I have somewhere along the way in life found that I have been a "helper" to other people. Are you a helper? It is something that some gravitate towards. Maybe coming from a family with multiple children we all had to pitch in and it was to be expected. But,
DO YOU HAVE THE CALLING THAT WILL LET YOU FIND YOURSELF?
There is an ultimate benefit of being a helper. In the field of Real Estate, Staging, Inspecting, Title or Loan jobs, Sales, Teaching and Encouraging, we are all tasked to be helpers. But it tests our limits. People are not perfect. … (51 comments)

A Mini Blog Vacation Because YOU Deserve It - 07/18/08 01:42 AM

You may have been distracted by any number of issues from family situations to health to just being overwhelmed for whatever reason. I even see it in blog discussions. The Art of Stickiness - 07/17/08 03:20 PM
In web site design especially for Realtors you often hear of the term "stickiness" or how long a visitor stays on the site.
In working with buyers or sellers in the marketplace Internet leads are a "component" of any good Marketing plan. Typically third on the list yet some agents in building business want to never get out from behind the computer.
In Marketing offline, we need to work a sphere of influence with our referrals, and do some heavy networking. Sphere marketing includes staying in touch with our database of at least 200 names.
Networking involves finding those events, usually … (27 comments)

Living Through Life's Tornadoes - 07/16/08 07:24 PM
This is a bad news and good news post. First off if you are alive you are going to have problems. Next some of those problems are going to be doozies. These are troubles. The worst of these troubles are both out of your control AND unexpected. Think of ferocious weather. I live in tornado alley and know about this. One tornado in Jarrell, TX cleaned a house completely off its foundation with 300 mph winds. In Greensburg, Kansas, 90% of the town was destroyed. When I lived in Florida I had 120 mph hurricane wind with rain hitting my window sideways … (28 comments)

Five Steps to KO Problems Before They Overwhelm You - 07/16/08 10:23 AM
If you think about the steps in buying or selling Real Estate it is like a sequence of solving problems along the way. As in life if you don't solve the problems when they are in front of you, nipping things in the bud, the accumulated problems can overwhelm you. Here are some thoughts for
KNOCKING OUT PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY OVERWHELM YOU.
1) Develop a Plan. Putting something on paper crystallizes your strategy and you can refer back to it like a roadmap.
2) Focus. Prioritize your problems. Work on the most important ones first.

Moving Forward with my Magical Watch - 07/16/08 08:33 AM
I sometimes feel like I am living in a Twilight Zone episode. Recently I dropped a new watch I bought on the pavement as I was taking it off to go into a fitness center. From that point on it turned into
        MY MAGICAL WATCH.
What I mean by that on a hot sweaty day I took my watch off to dry my wrist and put it back on. My buyer client watched and saw me thump the crystal a few times with my finger. She said, "What are you doing?" I said when I take the watch off the … (13 comments)

Success Leaves Clues - 07/15/08 12:46 PM
In Real Estate as with many other professions there is always the search for success. There is the looking for success in life too, and many coaches tell us or books are written about the "key" to success. Who knows if there is one answer to that. I do believe you have to know what your definition of success is. And that,
  SUCCESS LEAVES CLUES.
In this case you have to turn yourself sort of into a Sherlock Holmes type and get your magnifying glass out to identify the clues.

Clues might include income, examples of going the extra mile, … (28 comments)

Are You Wearing Your Smart Cookie Shoes? - 07/14/08 07:11 PM
Lately I have been frequenting one particular Chinese restaurant because it seems the messages I am getting from the fortune cookies have been amazingly accurate. I'm thinking of weaving them into a shoe of some sort so I have all these predictions and words of wisdom, ahem, right at my feet.
ARE YOU WEARING YOUR SMART COOKIE SHOES?

You Were Born To Fly - 07/14/08 10:41 AM
In listening to many buyers' dreams of building or purchasing their new houses I am convinced one thing about our lives:
     YOU WERE BORN TO FLY.
What I mean by that is we need to achieve our full potential. If someone ever gave us a book on what we really could achieve in life, it might scare us, because we can be doing so much more than we do.
We need mid course corrections many times in life. Points of reflection. What are our true gifts? Leader? Teacher? Homemaker? Counselor? Someone who makes others laugh? Someone who is great at consoling others? Great … (72 comments)

I Hear Voices - 07/13/08 04:19 PM
I have to confess
          I HEAR VOICES.
I searched the house thinking there were these little kids hiding in the cabinets but no, that wasn't it. Was it some psychotic break with voices in my head, where I needed some new meds prescribed? No, I don't think that was what it was.
It was the voices of the many in real estate social networking. It was an Active Rain call. One thing I have noticed from my own writing one article after another is a voice rises to the surface. Why this is so I haven't quite figured out yet … (34 comments)

For those involved in remodeling homes, and Stagers and Realtors consulting homeowners I've learned of a new paint. You know how when you paint walls in a house the smell lingers for days? Even the professional painters always wear those masks which makes me wonder too. So in that direction let's

Reach For The Eagle's Nest - 07/13/08 01:39 AM
In selecting a Realtor or Stager or other professional for our real estate needs we want the best.
Likewise those that want to be the best need to
          REACH FOR THE EAGLE'S NEST.
This is where you learn to fly like eagles and soar and not hang out on the ground with the turkeys.
I have seen this experience in many areas of associating with top notch peer level people.
Take Active Rain for example. It is approaching nearly 100,000 members. Do you know only about 5,000 are really active? Out of that, there are a "tremendous" number of what … (24 comments)

I have felt that way, but I am getting over it lately. I am learning better to roll with multi-tasking.

Laughing In The Face of Pain - 07/10/08 08:51 PM
In real estate you intermingle with a lot of people. I have indeed found some funny ones out there. What has amazed me sometimes is that some of the most funny ones have underlying pain that they are using the laughter as a coping mechanism.
I don't ever mean to make light of tragedies and events that are not pleasant in our lives but I really do admire people who continually laugh and make my life easier with making me laugh and smile. They even make it seem so easy at times. Yet I can see pain in their lives … (48 comments)

Lessons From The Coral Reef - 07/09/08 07:57 PM
I used to do quite a bit of snorkeling in trips I took off the Florida coast, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. Watching the bigger fish as I went deeper off the coral reefs I learned a thing or two.
I can relate it to folks struggling to keep real estate businesses going or homeowners trying to stave off foreclosures. It had to do with survival. While you can find yourself in a survival mode at different points in your life the big fish do not ALWAYS get the little fish in the food chain. Only sometimes. The smart little fish:

Why Your Home Is Your Castle - 07/09/08 02:41 AM
At this time of year when many take one if not two weeks of vacation and spend that time AWAY from the house I have noted two things:
1) Driving back home ALWAYS seems faster than heading to your vacation resort. This I have concluded is because driving home is the known and away is the unknown. Familiarity makes things more comfortable and time flies faster with the comfortable, and
2) When you arrive home, you realize ONCE AGAIN that your home is your castle.
This second item I have wondered about. What makes your home your castle? A few thoughts:

I don't mean making faces. Although with some Realtors and Customer Service-related professions there are a handful of Sourpusses out there.

Back in the Stone age, there was a book written called I'M OK, You're OK. It talked about the four states that your self-esteem could be in, with the title of the book being the best state.

Vacations Reveal Gentle Spirits - 07/02/08 08:47 AM
This time of year many of our clients in real estate are visiting the ocean and taking some time off for vacation.
In addition to showing me photographs of a trip, I like listening to the stories surrounding the sun, the sand, and the waves.
In particular what comes up is the breeze. Without trees and buildings to slow the wind down often there is a steady breeze at the ocean front. A word I have always liked in the breeze category is zephyr. It is a gentle breeze. Listening to the vacationers they seem to all pay attention to this … (42 comments)
