pay it forward: Pay it Forward - Dec 22 - 12/22/10 03:20 PM
Christmas shopping was done early in December.
Easy, smooth, no worries.
Early this week, I realized there were a few people (niece, nephews) who could and would accept more gifts if I felt so inclined.  They've been around for years, and there is a budget, constant, since Santa should be immune to the whims of the economy.
But this year, with gas prices creeping up, each neice/nephew got a small stack of gas cards.  Which completely messes up their probably expectations for Christmas 2011, right?  But, it felt like a way to help a few people out a bit more this … (2 comments)

pay it forward: Pay it Forward - Dec 16 - 12/16/10 05:27 PM
Washington DC got it's first winter storm today,(2 inches at most in Capitol Hill)
Time to break out the shovel, and start cleaing front steps & sidewalks for mail delivery, Fed Ex / UPS people, and the multitudes that especially descend to do the H St club scene (Thursdays seem to be a busy evening)
And mostly, I'm selfish, and don't want snow in my shoes as I go in/out of home.
The pay it forward part of this was that I figured I also clear sidewalk and front walk/stairs for my neighbor, a young mom who always comes home with … (1 comments)

pay it forward: Pay it Forward - Dec 8 - 12/08/10 12:01 PM
A few weeks ago, I wrote about working with someone to help him give a presentation.
From that post, someone reached out to me and asked if I could give him a few hints.  When we were finally able to speak on the phone for 15 minutes or so, I hope there was some value.
I spoke of mostly internal work: knowing the material, knowing your self confidence.
Always, one has to work it through.  I'm usually not impressed by speakers who wing it, and don't ever want to do that myself.  So, I never try to speak w/o some preparation.  … (0 comments)

pay it forward: Pay it Forward - Nov 30 - 11/30/10 03:08 PM
I'm not sure if this really counts as a pay it forward.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I spoke to my sister.  My nephew, young guy, 21 years old, though he's already doing more than I was in my late 20's.  He simply got to be an adult faster than I, maybe that's life in the early 21st century.  He's in the restauraunt industry and was feeling quite alone and lonely.  Completely across the country, on his own.
I've called in the past, and I don't usually get a phone call back.  That's fine.  The purpose of my calls is always to … (3 comments)

pay it forward: Pay it Forward - Nov 22 - 11/22/10 03:29 PM
As I hunt and consider ways that I can make things easier for another, this week, I came upon a todo from my task list from a few months ago.
The UPS delivery man on the route here is just amazing.  There are several delivery companies, and UPS has several drivers, but there is one who is head and shoulders above the rest.  At some point, I thanked him for his service and asked who his supervisor was.  I got the name & number, and never followed through.
This week, in order to check off my PIF task, I followed through.  … (4 comments)

pay it forward: Pay it Forward - Nov 14 - 11/14/10 04:32 PM
Someone I know was giving a presentation to some people this week. The man was terrified. Simply terrified.  I found out about this some 2 weeks ago, and frankly, it's none of my business.
But, I'm a realtor, so everything eventually comes to me, right?? Or so it feels. And so, I picked up the phone and offered if there was any way I could help, all he had to do was raise a hand.  Two days later, I'm in his office, and we are crafting his speech. And rehearsing.
He gave his talk, mid last week.  He said he was … (4 comments)

pay it forward: Pay it Forward - Week 4 - 11/09/10 01:29 PM
I'm not certain how this is working.
I've not found myself stopping. cleanly. at stop signs.
To ensure there are no pedestrians, or more likely my thinking is it's been chilly (or wet), and they need to get out of the elements faster than I need to zip through.
Surely I've not become a more gentle accomodating person, but this idea to do good is infecting all sorts of behavior which I'd not expected.
