Ok, so call me skeptical. I am. My very nature makes me a little skeptical about many things. I'm the guy who doesn't think MIGHTY PUTTY works like it says.
I'm the guy who thinks "if this product is SOOOOO GOOD, then why is 2 AM on a paid advertisement informercial the only place I can buy one?".
I'm the guy who thinks the moon landing was done on a studio lot...ok, so I'm not really THAT skeptical.
But suffice it to say that I do question things that don't add up.
So today I see that the Houston Chronicle has decided to lay off 12% of it's staff. I'm hearing that a lot lately. An NFL owner has decided to give everyone on the support staff an unpaid, 2 week hiatus so that he doesn't HAVE to let anyone go; other teams are cutting staff in all sports.

I'm hearing that many companies are laying people off and yet, I'm not hearing that these companies were in any kind of financial trouble. I'm not hearing that the layoffs are to help the company reorganize and survive in the "new economy". I'm just hearing that these companies are letting some people go.
So the skeptic in me wonders, are these legitimate layoffs or have these companies decided, "Hey, we can blame the faltering economy and cut some staff, which will add an additional $XXX,XXX to the bottom line!"
I know times are tough, but are these companies so poorly run that immediate lay offs are their only recourse or is this just an opportunity to get leaner and more profitable and have the econonomy be the scapegoat, even if it isn't!?
