Do your posts count? It's a math problem...

E = MC squared Congratulations to Brandon Farmer for writing the millionth ActiveRain post.  Do you know how to tell the # of your first post?  What was the number of your first post?

If you click on the title of the post in the URL is the number.

http://activerain.com/blogsview/1000000/Charlottes-Positive-Market-Indicators

Hooray for Brandon he wrote the 1,000,000, 000 post!!!!!   ActiveRain Hits 1,000,000 Blog Post Articles

Brad Andersohn wrote in his featured post announcing the millionth post:

"Jay Thompson wrote the very first Blog post on AR back on 06/25/2006.  Then 140,501 ActiveRain Members joined the community, followed Jay's lead, and together, helped build this Network with enough content to reach this goal."

Micheal Thornton had written a post that we were approaching the millionth post just yesterday:

You've Come a Long Way Baby...

Michael's post  said that Brett Tousley's post was the first.

Posted by Brett Tousley | Tacoma WA Real Estate | (253) 820-2745 on 06/25/2006 02:14 PM

If you click on Brett's post there is a 1.

Brad says it does not count.

My problem   I mean the math problem with if Brett's post and the other 14 posts that came before Jay's don't count then how is the 1,000,000 post number in Brandon's post the number.

Think there are any other posts that did not count written before Brandons?  I hate to rain on the parade for Brandon but was the real milestone 14 posts later... or have there been some other posts on ActiveRain that don't count?

Your post just may really, really be the millionth ActiveRain post... who knows...  so make it count.

Maureen, that's interesting..  Did AR count from #1, or from #14 to calculate the milestone 1millionth?

I'd like to hear Brads explanation.  It would be nice to write the 1 millionth post (and know it's really the 1 millionth post)

Brett's post is numbered 1  by the system.

Jay's is numbered  15.

I would bet there are other posts that don't count... that is kind of arbitrary isn't it?

I get the point that everyone was just messing around the day the blogs went up...

Maureen,

You made me go back to check on my own first post.  It was #520, way back in July, '06.  I'd forgotten just how much of a fledgling operation this was at the time.  Interesting observations all.  So, are we to wait for another, as yet unknown millionth poster.  Somebody get out the bells and whistles and start honking.

I think Brandon's post  is the millionth post Jim.  I think it is great that Jay Thompson wrote the first identifiable post on ActiveRain.  Michael Thornton was watching for a post numbered number 1,000,000.

It was 999,999 posts after the post that was numbered #1 from my understanding...  who wrote number 1,000, 014?  was that the real millionth post?  Do you think there was anything else written since June 25, 2006 that might not count?

There is a lot posted on ActiveRain that does not count, but my idea about what should and should not count is as arbitrary as the next persons.

thanks for answering the question about your first post Geri.  I think Brandon is the millionth unless someone wants to decide what counts and what doesn't.  At some member mile marker Jonn Novak and I announced who was the # I want to say it was 10,000? or 25,000 something that would be momentous. Then Matt Heaton emailed me who was the number... we were off by a few... I can't remember what John and I were watching but it was not in real time and we obviously did not know how to see someone's member number. All this obsession with #'s... milestones!

Oh, and we're not still messing around now?  :-)

Don't take that the wrong way - I really enjoy messing around.....

Maybe the math is based on first post by a regular member as opposed to a staffer?

Someone should start a post ,,,, "What is your first blog post numbered?" and everyone could respond in the comments......

I was hoping I could just plug something like this into the browser's address bar http://activerain.com/blogsview/100/

Nope, it won't go anywhere without the post title in addition to the number.  Boo.

We are still messing around.

A lot of this doesn't count.

I want all 140,000 +/_  (is that it?)  members to tell me their first post...that's why I asked "What was the number of your first post?" In the first paragraph and why Geri told me....

Oh that's right still only a small % of the members have ever written a post... and then which ones really count?

My first was #152, but you already knew that :-)

And mine is just a link post so maybe it doesn't count anyway.

you just did a link post as your first post?  I am going to read it.

I probably can remember #152 easier than mine?

#3767 which was something about "duh ActiveRain is blogging...."  and members only, those should not count... but there is a lot of those.

This is too much like math class. "A post leaves a keyboard in Phoenix at 11:23 a.m. EST.  Similarly, one leaves the keyboard in Houston at 9:22 CST..."

OUCH! MAKES. MY. HEAD. HURT.

I hate word problems Karen.  I have lazy brain when it comes to word problems... always have always will... in school my brain would scream how dumb they were, if it was multiple choice I would just guess.

I actually did pretty good on them... but puzzlers and things that others do for fun... my brain says "that is NOT fun, words are fun, numbers are fun but this twisted up word and math stuff is a crock of  $#*@ "

I left a comment on #152 Cheryl... about how it was not one of the first few posts... I am demanding a total recount on AR.

And then I looked at the Top Member Rooster for 2006  http://activerain.com/roster/2006

And realized what a total goof-off slacker I have been...... :-)

Let's do ask for a recount.  Now, would that be fun, or what?!!

I guess I did not know there was a Top Member page by year... I knew about by month...

I am going to demand a recount on that too.  Jason Crouch must have joined in 2006 and not posted until March 2007 but he made top member roster in 2006...

OK

I started to leave a comment demanding a recount and explaining the illogic of Brad's post but decided not to.

I'm finding all kinds of hidden treasure this morning.  Here's another way to view new members by date:  http://activerain.com/action/agents/new_users/2006/6/29  (Just change the date values to see whatever date you want.)

Interesting.   Jim Duncan joined on 06/26/ 2006 (my birthday.) I don't remember that year... 6/26/2007 was a continuing education nightmare.  6/26/2008 nice day. gosh how many years in an OH con ed cycle now...

Do you remember / know about the big point manipulation scandal in 2006? Matt posted a screen shot of who was doing it? It was a screen shot from the inside out?  It had the member numbers on it.  He had to take it down.. took down the whole post but a friend of mine saved the screen shot. The point manipulation was of the first rating system... the up and down rating system (as opposed to the later 1 to 5 rating system.)

An office that would get together and comment and rate posts in the morning, backward apostraphes...

I still don't know what day I joined AR but this tool will make it easier to find it.  I know I tried something else once and could not find it but I think I was looking in August not July.

Maureen, The best I can understand the code and the data base system, Wes designed the data base as an incrementing numerical system so that the data could be "called or queried" on demand. The easiest way to do this was to create a number for each post starting with 1. I have no way of knowing what the first 14 or so posts were, I guess I could find them if I dug deep enough and if they are public.

So to answer your question, I would say that the system started at 1 and has incremented to what it is currently. I hope this helps...

I am so not the techno-blogger or poster but guessing that sometimes the speed of the internet and the volume of members can cause confusion in who gets what number....I picture them flying in racing to the counter and mayve colliding as they champion their position, hmmm ?

thanks for the comments.

The point is the # in the links are the # in the links.

Funny that Brandon  took a kersplat on the post.  Or was he given one for non original content?

Posted by Brandon Farmer on 03/24/2009 02:18 PM

Which is OK. Lots of people post non original content here.

Sally The numbers in the posts don't get confused , #1 is the one that Michael said was #1, Brett's post.   Ben Wisely an employee of AR who no longer works for them called out it was the first one....it has #1 in the url.  If the numbers run from one to a million, #1 is the first one.

Jay did the first identifiable post... but it is numbered #15.  If they are acknowledging the post numbered #1,000,000 Brad made a mistake in his post by IDing Jay's post as number one.
