On of the things I heard about at ReTechSouth was about catergorizing your friends on FaceBook. I spent last night doing just that. I actually wish they had come out with this before I had over 1847 friends.
Now I don't really have 1847 friends...many are aquaintances. Aquaintances are important people in your life too. According the The Tipping Point, aquaintances make great Connectors. One of my friends on Facebook wrote on my Wall, "Gee I'm glad I knew you when".
So when Facebook came out with this Friends List I was glad to be able to put my Friends and Aquaintances in groups. I have all my blogging friends in one group, college friends in one etc...You can set up as many lists of friends as you want and just like in Outlook where you use Categories a person can be in more than one group.
I am doing an Advanced Social Media Class tomorrow at Keller Williams and I am saving the one for Ann Arbor Area Realtors to walk them through it.
Here is a easy video tutorial that will show you how to do it. I am a visual learner so it was helpful to me. It was created by TubeNinja on YouTube but Steve Schuitt in real life. Steve does really cool, helpful videos so check him out. You can also follow him on Twitter.

I am taking a class on Facebook tomorrow and one on Linkedin next week... I only have 333 friends on Facebook I have no clue how to turn off my Twitter updates to Facebook... I don't get filters... I don't know what a page is.
I have been told by younger people NOT to use Facebook like Linkedin... that only my real friends should be friends there so I ignore friend requests and then I hear from someone I have never met but have known online for years and I accept their friend request.
I will watch the video...maybe it will help me before I take the class.
Thank you for this post...I need to figure out how to use Facebook for business. I have a page but don't allow business clients into my Facebook because sometimes...I'm just silly. Now maybe I can figure this out better.
You are awesome Missy! Thank you so much for sharing! I too need to filter the friends list. I have friends, family, realtors, mortgage professionals, online friends etc that I am going to categorize them to follow a little bit easier.
I am making groups of my friends too. But the problem is when some of them overlap - what if some of my co-workers are also friends who are also church family. LOL
Thank goodness I put mine in groups from the beginning and now I love the new set up that allows you to view those groups status on home page. You can see what your friends are up to without having to look through numerous business related posts. And of course you can put a close friend business relationship in both categories! Good luck getting organized!
I already had my friends defined in to catagories and am so glad that I did!!! It does help alot with who you want to send whats to. I liked the video Missy and thanks for sharing it.
HI Missy - great tips for those famous social networkers like yourself and Jason - my list is so short I don't even have to alphabetize! ;) However I can use some of this advice in organizing our database better... thanks!
I can see how that would be useful. I purposely have not tried to grow my networks to a huge level because I am trying to know people. I am logged into Facebook all day so I comment here and there on the wall.
I can see how big databases could utilize this. Steve Schuitt is awesome. He has got such great energy. 4K he definitely needs this Facebook tool:-) You too with almost 2k:-)
Missy...Thanks for the jump on this one! I caught this in the Facebook class at RETech, but they had ro rush so fast, it was hard to follow.
I hope this tool will help me "edit out" the people that post on my profile? Or does it? I had a friend (and he really IS a good friend, he just uses Facebook in a totally different way than I do) post a really less than desirable comment on my page. I went and took the comment off, but what happens if you are not on your facebook page every day? I do get e-mail alerts when people post, so guess that will solve the problem?
Ah, so much to learn! LOL! Thanks for this great tip!
The friends list is a great feature. I find it useful for the following:
- Finding your friends activities quickly (you may not be interested in everything some groups are doing)
- Preventing some group from certain activities (ie writing on your wall etc)
My latest facebook fascination is with the fan pages. The more you play in FB the more you realize how powerful of a network it really is for business.
I caught that class too. I'm goingto use this feature and also the databse upload the y spoke about, I'm thinking of scouring my Best Image data for Facies.
Missy, thank you for the tips. I did not know that you can categorizing Your Friends on Facebook. This is a great idea. Well, it will be a chore but I think it will help a lot. I just took a seminar and learned some social media benefit too.... And I need to do more social media thing everyday.
Anyway, thanks!
Missy, Thank you for the information. I'm new to Facebook and still trying to learn but I didn't know you could categorize your friends. I'll try to get time to work on that.
Missy, I didn't get to take this class at #rets...I was in another one. Will this keep "clients" from seeing my fun conversations with friends? I hope so. I let 2 become friends on facebook and have since regretted it, sort of. I like to stay connected with my friends there and don't want to ALWAYS have to act professional, LOL.
Ouch, read all the comments and feel left out in the field. I do not know where you get time to do all that, and this makes me feel that I must be too old.
I am sort of sitting on the fence trying to understand what is this about. How can I believe in 4K friends, and even aquaintances? I might understand getting huge numbers, but we in reality do not have so many "friends"
This is the first I've heard of categorizing your friends on Facebook. Thanks Missy. I'm like you, I like categories for things because my mind can wrap around it easily to sort.
I had been told by an agent in my office who came back from a class at CBR (Columbus Board of Realtors) about Facebook, TO DO it and I had looked at Facebook a couple of times but did not see how to do it.
Thank you Missy. I had questions about another social media device, I came to your site and of course, learned more than I expected.
Keep it up, many of us count on you (-:
Your Genesee County MI connection, Angie
(ps, I went the Washtenaw WCR meeting last week, I was hoping to meet you)
Missy.... thanks for sharing this. I didn't know that you could categorize your friends on facebook. I wish things just came easy at times. In any case, thanks for the heads up...
Missy- AH, another thing to do, add it to my list. Facebook has not been my priority since I discovered the awesome majic of twitter:) I am working on some other projects right now, training my daughter, you will be glad to hear, to become a new listing manager as well as she has decided to go to real estate school. THis is NOT the one that graduated from college. That one, well, we are losing her to her career:) she was our expired listing person- handled all the expired listing marketing program. Now our other daughter will also have to take over those duties for the time being. Lots to do!
Thank you so much for this! I just spent the past 45 minutes categorizing my friends....and now my facebook account is much more organized than my kitchen counter! :-)
Thanks for sharing the helpful video. I missed this, too (I was with Connie! :-) It was so great to meet you at REtech. I appreciate you and all that you share, especially your wonderful light that shines and shines.
Thanks Missy - I like Tweetdeck because I can create groups to make sure I follow the ones I definitely don't want to miss as my followers gain in #s. I have been wanting to do this on Facebook so thanks for getting me started.
MIssy - well it certainly makes sense but the thought of trying to do this now makes me cringe. Gonna come back and check out the video later...dinner guests arriving momentarily.
Missy- I was reading through some of your posts and noticed this one. I see how I commented that I need to do this, I still have not, and this was in March. Oh well, I guess there are more pressing matters at hand. I just bookmarked this to remind me after things get settled more.
Thanks for the post. I too discovered this tool a few weeks ago. It is much easier with the lists to send to a certain group of people. I catagorized mine into personal friends/ family/ Realtors/Coworkers/Past Buyers/Past Sellers/Family.
