For years SEO experts and not-so-experts have been saying that semantic searching will be the next big thing since Kool-Aid. Some have said it was already here and some said it would never come. Well it’s here. Well sort of. Google announced yesterday thatwe're deploying a new technology that can better understand associations and concepts related to your search, and one of its first applications lets us offer you even more useful related searches (the terms found at the bottom, and sometimes at the top, of the search results page)” The thing is that for me it doesn’t seem to work yet. If you try it out maybe it does for you. They have an example and show you what it looks like but I just get the normal search. I am sure it just takes time to propagate across all the servers.

Short of being able to truly test this out this is still big news in the SEO world. Why? Well this is the day that all your good SEO work and Karma hopefully comes back to your site. If you have been listening to the experts and ignoring black hat SEO you should have been working on smart SEO versus trying to stuff key words all over the place. Key words still have a lot of relevance but if your SEO is smart and you are very descriptive rather than repetitive I would hope that your sites have more relevance to Google. Now don’t think I am saying that this will be the only factor because it certainly is not and it probably won’t have all that much weight. I don’t notice a huge change in my positions in the SERP’s but this could really reward those with great content versus people with static or templated content.

Take a look at this picture to illustrate what Semantic searching means.

semantic searching on Google

What I mean by this is that those of us who are English majors just got a pat on the back from Google for doing a good job studying the English language. The better you are able to describe something, the more clues you put into place such as location and other descriptors, should all be rewarded. Think of word relationships, synonyms and how subject matters are related. In Real Estate an example might be real estate, houses, homes, MLS listings, property and more specific such as condos, luxury homes, etc.

How much is the reward? Like I said above I don’t know that this is the end of SEO as we know it but rather this might be one more factor to really be looking at. All this is saying is the golden rule of SEO: have great content. That’s it.
