model sederLast night, I attended a huge dinner party.  Our neighbors at the Temple Emanuel invited members of the greater Grand Rapids community to attend a Model Seder.  I had never been to a Sedar celebration before although I am very familiar with the old Testament story of the Jewish Passover.  The invitation was posted in the local paper and my husband and I registered to attend.

The hall was full when we arrived.  The tables were set with the symbolic foods and each table had at least one member of the congregation present to answer questions and welcome the guests.  Rabbai Michael A. Schadick opened the event with an introduction and then proceeded to share with us through demonstration and teaching the rich tradition embodied in the Seder.

It was a really interesting and educational event.  We read passages from the book used by the Jews during their Passover Seder called the Haggadah.  The meaning of the ceremonial foods was explained and we were invited to join in several songs; some in Hebrew and some in English.

The event was underwritten by the Coopersmith-Rosenzweig Foundation.  At the end of the Rabbai's teaching demonstration, all 180+ guests were served a light supper and dessert.  It was really delightful to see so many people from different backgrounds coming together to learn about a different religious tradition and get to know each other.

In a surprising coincidence, we found ourselves sitting at a table with 3 individuals who had lived in Africa; one of whom was the mother of kids whom we had attended school with.  Then during dinner, we discovered that the member of the congregation seated at our table had also attended the University of Wisconsin, our alma mater.  Now...what are the chances of all of that happening from an invitation to dinner?

Hi Lola!  Did attending help the Bible come alive a bit?  Sounds like an awesome event to participate in and to discover someone there with familiar background must have been a plus.  You live such an interesting life.

Lola, I have never participated in a Seder, but I did attend a presentation by the Jews for Jesus 30+ years ago and still remember it today.  And it did bring the Bible to life for me like Diane stated above.

What a glorious opportunity to evolve as a person.  There are so many religions, each steeped in some incredible traditions.  I'm so glad you and your husband were able to attend the Seder.  And thanks for sharing your lesson with all of us.

Lola - It must have been fascinating to be able to attend such a wonderful cultural event and to take away from it such a learning experience.

Temple Emanuel. Can I assume that's a Messianic Jewish congregation? Our pastor is friends with the sweetest rabbi of a Messianic Jewish congregation. I love it when our congregations... well... congregate =D

Lola - It's so great you saw that invitation in the newspaper.  I've always wanted to attend a Seder.  How cool that you seized the opportunity and met some new friends with some reall commonality of interests.

Diane, not only did the Bible come alive through the religious teaching and explanation, it was a delight to be welcomed so warmly.  Grand Rapids is a very religious city; we have more churches per capita than any other place in the United States.

But unfortunately, it is also a religiously segregated city and it is not unusual for people to never venture beyond their current congregations unless they become dissatisfied and leave.  So, it was a really enriching experience to see people coming together in the grace of fellowship to learn from each other. I'm glad we went...

George, if you ever have the opportunity to attend one...Go!  I'd personally like to experience a Seder meal in the context of a family celebration within a home.

Terry, I continue to be pleasantly surprised by all the opportunities we have here in Grand Rapids to expand our horizons if we're open to others.  This experience was not an exception.  Maybe you and Bonnie can catch the celebration next year!

Teresa, it was a special evening.  Thanks for stopping to read and comment.

Lisa...it was a Reformed congregation.  As we talked with one of the members, it was interesting to learn about how the worship style has become more participatory even as there has been a movement towards a more orthodox adherence.  They have a study on the Torah (I believe on Saturdays) which he indicated is attended by some Christians as well.

That sounds really nice.  I think it is always great to have an opportunity to venture outside of your normal situations and comfort zones to experience something new and different.  It helps us all understand and appreciate each other so much more.

Very true Kathy.  In a city which is sometimes divided across denominational lines, these types of events serve to bridge those divides and introduce 'neighbors' to each other.  I'm glad I was there.
