Yesterday when I went to school to pick up my 6 year old Daughter I was greeted by her shrieks of excitement "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, look my tooth is loose...I am going to lose my 3rd tooth by tomorrow". I congratulate my daughter and notice that her tooth is barely doing little more than just a slight wiggle.
My daughter then waves goodbye to her friends and tells them that by tomorrow her tooth will be gone. We get in the car and my daughter continues to tell me to call the Tooth Fairy to let her know that she will need to come collect her tooth that night. Knowing that the tooth was doing just a little bit more than a small wiggle I cautiously tell my daughter that her tooth is probably not quite ready to come out and that while I know she is excited about losing it will probably take a few more weeks.
She is upset by this and just looks at me with her huge crystal blue eyes and tells me..."Mommy just call the tooth fairy, please".
Soon after her bath my daughter is in the bathroom brushing and "wiggling her tooth". I leave her to attend to my 5 year old when all of a sudden my daughter comes running into the bedroom shouting "look Mommy, my tooth just fell out!" I look over and see her mouth, not only filled with, but dripping blood onto her shirt and floor, and her tiny hand filled with blood and a single small blood stained tooth.
Normally, the presence of blood would send my daughter into hysterics, but not tonight as all she tasted was the taste of victory, she had accomplished her goal. After cleaning her up, I tucked her in, called the Tooth Fairy and put her to bed with a huge toothless smile.
Well, looking back I should have never underestimated the determination of a 6 year old. She taught me an important lesson that although sometimes the process of reaching our goal may be uncomfortable it is all worth it in the end and to never underestimate the power of determination.
