Atlanta enjoys a special relationship with great cities around the world!

Atlanta hosted the 1996 Olympic GamesWhat does Atlanta have in common with great cities such as Rome, Sydney, Beijing, Berlin and Moscow? Of course, the answer to that question is that all of these illustrious cities hosted the Olympic Games.

And while that may seem trivial, the long term effects of the games are revitalization and prosperity for the Olympic cities. Atlanta is no exception to this phenomenon.

Since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the downtown area has thrived and grown and become a favorite destination for both tourists from around the world, and locals from the suburbs.

And reminders of the Olympics can be seen everywhere in the area, from dormitories at Georgia State and Georgia Tech (formerly the Olympic Village) to Turner Field (formerly Olympic Stadium) to Centennial Olympic Park.

Having the Olympic Games in Atlanta was a good thing, but the long term legacy of the event can only be described as extraordinary. The city was permanently transformed into a world class destination!

I saw that happen to Seattle too, way back when.  I think that is one reason the Cities of the World are willing to spend millions of dollars to attract the Olympics, it will be a legacy that keeps on giving to the City in economic results.

Beijing China did an amazing job in the Olympics. I am very proud of them, my background origin is Taiwan Republic of China, and I am happy to see Chinese prosper. Now we are seeing many Chinese buyers coming to Manhattan New York Real Estate market seeking second home and investment properties.

Gail...

I think that Seattle hosted a World's Fair ... which is also a great event! The lesson is that the long term effects of these events goes way beyond ticket and souvenir sales, they can transform a city! Thanks, my friend.

Eileen...

I think that China will enjoy more benefit than other Olympic cities, thanks to intensive modernization and infrastructure improvements. I know that I think of it differently now. Thanks!

Hosting the Olimpic Games can be a real Boon for the Host city if they have good plans for future use of the venues created.

Great pics Richard. I remember very well when the Olympics came to your town, and I don't remember any other time that my friends and family were so excited about the it. After all, it was right around the corner.

I remember this event pretty vividly. One of my close friends actually flew down from Jersey and attended the games. I remember him describing what a great experience it was.

Brother Richard - Wow, has it really been 13 years since the Olympics were in Atlanta?  I swear that was just the other day.  I'm not much of an Olympics fan myself (except for the hockey), but it is quite a spectacle for a city and as you said, I imagine the improvements made to showcase and prepare for the influx of people can really revitalize an area.
