Property Managers need to know the DOMESTIC VIOLENCE laws - they apply to landlords!!!

By
Property Manager with Gibson Management Group, Ltd.

With the current economy, many tenants are doubling up and renting properties together....sometime, it does not work out.  When we get these calls, we need to know what our state law allows and REQUIRES us to do....one of the BEST resources is Legal Momentum.org

This is a a state-by-state guideline for domestic violence.  Check your state for the laws that apply to landlords and property managers and check back after your state legislature ends for any additions that may have been added.

Good info!  My sister had a weird domestic situation with tenants recently and I will pass this info along!

Tracey - the Legal Momentum website is an EXCELLENT source and they keep it updated.  PM offices should have it bookmarked and review with their staff frequently!!

Wallace - Thanks for sharing this great resource!  I just had a tenant call yesterday saying she is a victim of domestic abuse.  Sadly this happens all too often.

We had this come up a couple of months ago. Seems the current byfriend objected to the woman showing up with the former boyfriend- to the point where he shot a shotgun blast through the wall! Made quite a hole. The woman (she and current boyfriend) was able to break the lease under those rules.

Les & Leslie...knowing the law to explain it to our clients is important.  Many landlords think that a tenant must abide by the lease in an abusive relationship which is not always the case.
