EARTH HOUR

Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund (WWF) that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change.

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour.  In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm local time, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level with a goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights.

·         The Vegas Strip will go dark for only the second time in its history.

·         The Eiffel Tower will no longer be a tower of light.

·         Notre Dame will be shrouded in darkness and church bells will ring across Sweden.

·         In Sydney harbor, the ferry boats will salute with their horns.

·         In New York, the Empire State Building, Time Warner Center, 787 Seventh Avenue, Citigroup Center, 599 Lexington Avenue and all non-essential lighting on New York City governmental structures will be turned off, joining skyscrapers in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, San Francisco (including the Giants game scoreboard going dark in the 7th inning) and Seattle.

From icons to individual homes, lights in 700 cities in 78 countries will be turned off for one symbolic hour to make a global statement about climate change and demonstrate a collective willingness to search for a solution.  We at Brookfield Properties are joining in this global cause by turning off any unnecessary lighting outside the buildings and in the public lobby spaces.

We invite you to “flip the switch” on March 28th and show your commitment to taking action by turning off any unnecessary lights before you leave this Friday.

Thank you for joining us, and the world, for Earth Hour.

AMY - One estimate I saw had more than 2,000 cities around the globe participating in Earth Hour this year . In Ontario, the Provincial Government several municipalities and many corporations and individuals  will participate by turning off lights to reduce energy consumption and green house gas emissions.
