I have  been oh, so wonderfully  busy  this week. Negotiating and ratifying a contract on the Southfield listing. A successful auction at 7001 Park Heights, , two sellers waiting for me to do the listing agreement, then showings on my latest two listings, Terrapin and Oakland. There have been seminars and meetings - CRS and Gee Dunsten last week, a WCR luncheon, a webinar with Frances Flynn Thorsen, a networking evening with Vito Simone at his Canton office, a planning meeting for an art auction in May, lunch with my publisher, and a funeral.  Plus, of course, many phone calls, emails, reading, etc. Yep, a typical Type E schedule.

Dining table mess

Desk #1As I was leaving the house this morning for a string of appointments I got a glimpse of my desk – well, actually two desks plus the dining room table separate for doing my income taxes. What did I see?     Looks like a paper truck threw up!

Oh…yeah…and my  deadline is today for getting the stuff to my accountant.

Now don't think I am not organized. Received a call from a client who had purchased one of my listings back in 2001, and another who bought 14 years ago. Within minutes,  had my hands on  those folders with all the pertinent information. One of these clients is looking at my new listing and both are thinking of selling their homes.Desk #2

So it's not a lack of organization that leads to scenes like these. Nope, it's the Type Ein me. All the information is there..I just file by pile.  I can find what is needed. It's the task of sorting it into someone else's order that I avoid. And that is why my desks  looks like a paper truck threw up!

Are you brave enough to photo your desk before you straighten it up?  Come on show us...I dare you.

In case you are wondering, the tax stuff was delivered to the accountant and the dining room table is clear.

Usually I can compete with your piles, but as irony would have it... one of the agents in my office got on my case this week and "made" me clean my office.  I'll have to post you a picture when I go back in on Monday.  I'm happily taking this weekend OFF.

Margaret, You're SO busy I can't imagine how busy you would be if you actually cleaned that desk.  You're making room for all the NEW work if you do---dare ya!  And get ready to hire help :)

Margaret - first, my congratulations on your business and your busy-ness. Sounds like things are going well. I, too, have piles but I know where everything is and can find it (well, normally). Not all of us have the same way of organizing our stuff but it works for us, sometimes to the chagrin of others.

Yep, it's likely there could be some improvements, but we don't all fit into the same way of organizing. That's also true in terms of how we think through issues, and how we manage our time.  There is always room for improvement but also different styles that fit with our personalities.

Jeff

Margaret - I guess I am not brave enough for that right now.  :)  Mine looks similar.  We have a ridiculous number of books in our house (most of which are on shelves, some in piles).  My wife also "files by pile", as you mentioned.

margaret- I wrote a blog awhile back about the same thing. papers everywhere. I used an iclip photo then and will use one again. My desk (desks) are off limits to anyone or anything but me LOL. But I do eventually straighten them up as I cant stand chaos. Mus not be a type E huh? :)

I love Carole's comment - I'm on a personal mission to clear the clutter and open myself to receiving all the good that my clutter is blocking.  Somehow I too seem to do better when the paper truck throws up!!

Margaret -- loved the image of a paper truck throwing up - -In my mind's eys was  one of those cartoon trucks with faces!  I also am a filer by piler person. Tables, desks, kitchen cupboard and once and awhile the kitchen stoce -- so I can grab the pile on the way out the door! There does come a point though when I get paralzed by too much visual clutter - and am almost there!  Tax stuff goes in a box tomorrow - that will help.

I live in a tiny little cabin ... no way will I take any pictures until I finish my project/cleaning list this weekend!

Oh my God. . . I just realized this looks like MY desk.  I've got to get busy and do some Spring cleaning.

Margaret - I am a piler, I have never figured out how to have a clean desk, unless it is just after I have moved in or just before I am moving out. I am not sure how my wife puts up with it, especially the dining room table.

Good to hear you are busy Margaret. I got my taxes done a few weeks ago. Always great to get that done and out of the way!

Whew!  I feel better now that I know I'm not the only one.  As Carol commented above, I have tried to clean and organize my desk to help me think more clearly.  It didn't work out as it only stayed that way for a couple of days and then it was a complete mess again!

Tammy, No fair taking a photo if it was just cleaned. Have a great weekend.

Carole, When I clean and straigten up, I actually become LESS productive. Guess I don't want to mess it up again. If I made room for the new work...I would never finish the old.:)

Jeff, In my hubby's eyes...this is the only thing that keeps me from being perfect....and we all know he could not handle perfection.

Jason, come on, be brave show 'em both. My husband did not think I would post this. He hasn't seen it yet.

Martha, How about posting a link to that blog here?

Kate, Keep us posted on your mission.

Sally, I just might have delete this comment You are putting us all to shame with that beautifully organized office...I kinda like the grapefruit.

Alexandra, I admire organization and neat people but  I sure can relate to the rest of us. BTW, I love going into homes and telling the sellers how to organize and clear the clutter.....and they really listen to me.

Susie, I thought you were more daring than that...come on it's just we folks here that will see it. :)

I too have piles, typicall on my office floor. (I use a laundry basket sometimes to cart it home!)

BUT, as you, I can locate anything..as needed.

I guess I am a Type-E  too!

Margaret - I just read your blog, I stopped what I was doing with your blog still open I took this snap shot of my desk area. Cluttered, somewhat organized - still manage to find things. Was fun :)

Tom, Thanks for stopping by. Are you going to send me photo before you clean?

Mike, Maybe we could have our spouses speak to each other.  Or could start a CDA (clean cluttered  desk anonymous)

Bill, I have a feeling you have a clean organized desk. Am I right?

Stacie, Welcome to the club.

Michelle, Have not needed the laundry basket yet.  Not sure this is a trait of the Type E. Go to my website and you can take the Type E quiz.

Petra, I love that you took a photo.  Looks like a very productive office to me!

Cluttered desk anonymous - that would add another one of the xxxx anonymous meetings for me to go to, bloggers anonymous, procrastinators anonymous (but nobody ever schedules that meeting), junk food in the car eaters anonymous........

Margaret,  I am with you on this one.  Piles at home, in the office, random rooms in the house etc.  Drives my wife nuts but I can find everything in just a few minutes.  Good to know it is just a Type E thing or is it???

Taxes, hmmm I should probably get those done soon huh?

Josef, How about your wife, Mike's wife and my Lee getting together and  talk about our "condition".

Don't know if this is a Type E thing....have to do a survey.

Margaret~

As you say..."...So it's not a lack of organization that leads to scenes like these. Nope, it's the Type Ein me...". AHA! That explains those piles of scattered bits of this and that I see to my right, left, and behind and before me ..I always thought it would be a good idea to create some kind of "lazy susan" for those of us who enjoy this condition... =)

3:08pm • #24

I don't have a desk.  Which means, everything in my house has become my desk.  Margaret knows what I mean.

No wayyyyyy are you getting pictures.  And I don't blame any type E...I blame genetics..

Mike, You think maybe they want to stay anonymous?

janeAnne, We are not sure if we blame this on Type E...still have to verify this.  I like the lazy susan idea. How our desk chair in the middle of a giant circular desk, The "deck" moving oround us. I could work with that.

Hi Erica, No desk, so your entire house is like my desk.  Hmmm  Genetics...may be a possibility. How about just a couple pictures. We are friends family after all.

Sally and David,

I have a clean desk right now. But know that it won't stay that way for long. Which one of you has the straight desk or are you not revealing any names.
