Last September, I took a few days to travel around Colorado and enjoy the changing colors of fall.

One morning, shortly after sunrise, I stopped to take a picture of this grassy area on the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison where the play of light and shadow across the grass caught my attention.  Just as I got set up, the "photo gods" smiled on me and I saw these two coyotes trotting across the field, just out beyond the trees.

It is always so fascinating to see wild animals in their element and especially when they are completely unaware of your presence.  This pair was probably returning to their den after a night of hunting.

It was a beautiful morning during my favorite time of year and I felt very fortunate to capture this rare sight.

I carry my camera everywhere now. That is a great shot!

I saw a red coyote while showing a house here. I know it was a coyote, but it was red! I didn't have a camera with me. :(

Hey Andrea, I've never seen a red coyote but sure wouldn't doubt they're out there.  Keep that camera handy and let's see what comes out of it.

Thanks Rita.  One of the things I love about Colorado in  addition to the beautiful scenery, is the abundance of wildlife.  Around my house, we see deer, elk, wild turkey, fox, bear, and mountain lion - not all at once, of course, but at different times throughout the year.

Hi Mike!
How fun is that?  Of course, you also have to have good eyes...seeing an animal in their environment can be a challenge!

Gorgeous shot!  One Friday night, we got a late start on a camping trip.  We drove our pickup truck to Sonora Pass here in California.  When we arrived at the remote place we wanted to camp, we were too tired to even pitch the tent and set up camp, so we simply jumped into our sleeping bags in the bed of the truck.  I was half asleep when I heard a little noise.  When I sat up, there was a little pack of Cayotes running right by the truck.  They couldn't have been more than 6 feet away.  I was shocked that they had come that close to us.

My husband would love to come and stay with you for oh say about a year. He is itching to hunt there and spend some time.

Mike,

You can hardly see them, but good call. Love the golden hues of this picture. :)

Paula, I've been a hunter and photographer my whole life so I guess I've learned to look for movement or unusual, out-of-place shapes.

Mryl, I'm sure that was exciting!  Although coyotes very rarely attack humans, you just never know for sure.

Laura - just a year - that's not nearly enough time to do all the scouting, preparing, and actual hunting!  :-)

Thanks, Steve, that golden glow was what caught my eye and got me to stop at that particular spot.

Hello Mike,

Great shot! You must have good eyes to have caught this one with your camera.

Jackie, it was really pure luck.  I was framing the area with a zoom lens set at 300mm and the coyotes just sort of trotted into the frame!  I would have had a hard time picking them up with my naked eyes.
