Uniquely Minnesota Artful Distractions—Homeowner Version: Giant Red-Headed Woodpecker in Forest Lake, MN

Giant Woodpecker in Forest Lake by Teri Eckholm RealtorWinding around Forest Lake along North Shore Trail, it is always a good idea to keep your eyes on the road. Along this twisty-turny trail, there is a good view of the eclectic mix of lakeshore homes with the huge mansions abutting the property with quaint lakeshore cabins.

Just off 97 and before the turn on Keather, if you look up you can catch a glimpse of this wonderfully unique distracting piece of carved and painted art perched up on an overhanging limb. The woodpecker is about three feet long; just a bit bigger than the real Pileated woodpeckers that inhabit this area.

Teri:  Did you really mean to say that woodpecker is three feet long.  I have never heard of such a thing... and... this giant red-headed one... just amazing.  Thanks for sharing.  Teri... I hope you are safe from all the floodwaters.  Take care...

Teri, this is a true story and it happened to day and her you have written ( not exactly what I was dealing with )about something I was thinking about this morning. I was sitting outside with my coffee and paper and there was a wood pecker that was tapping so loud, I half thought I should help with a power tool so he would get his hole in the tree and then it would be quiet. That;s not al. I wanted to be able to see him doing it an get it on video and share this here as a post. I looked and couldn't see him, even though he made a lot of noise. Then I even thought about just buying an istock photo and writing about the signs of spring and this wood pecker. The phone rang and that ended that, lol. So I really appreciate the calling back to this morning with the reminder of the carved woodpecker. Too funny. We must live in some sort of parallel universe.

Carole--Thank you...I haven't seen too many new ones to add lately so they are more few and far between than when I first started. Not everyone has a sculpture in their yard despite what it may seem from the amount I have posted. :)

Terry--People don't visit these as I often don't post the exact location. They are "driveby" art I have found in people's front yards or as neighborhood icons. There are quite a few in the north metro Twin Cities.

Karen Anne--The real Pileated woodpeckers are about 1.5ft long (about the size of a crow). This wooden one perched up in the tree is about 3ft long. Sorry for any confusion.

I live just north of the Twin Cities and our property is not near any river or creek. We are near a lake (not lakeshore) but that does not have the flood danger. We are not in a floodplain or wetland, thankfully.

We are well south of the flooding. It is about 3hours north and west of the Twin Cities area along the Fargo ND/Moorehead MN border. The Red River flows north into Canada so there will be further problems into Winnipeg as the spring thaw continues. There are other rivers in central MN experiencing flooding too but the photos aren't as dramatic so they aren't making the national news.

William--Parallel universes. I thought I only shared a parallel live with Sandra Cummings :) We have one of these big woodpeckers living in our yard. My son captured some very nice photos of it this past winter. I will have to post them soon.

There are so many ironic woodpecker stories...Here's my favorite. A friend of my dad's, Pete, was a handyman. A woodpecker that started to peck at the side of their home. After several days, Pete got tired of the noise and damage, so he took a piece of sheet metal an attached it to the house in the bird's favorite pecking spot. The bird went away and didn't return. A few years later, Pete died. When his wife came home from Pete's funeral, she heard a tapping sound on metal. The woodpecker had returned and was pecking in that exact spot. Only that day...only just after the funeral.

Teri,  We had a pileated woodpwecker nest in a dead tree in the common area behind our home, But they left when the tree was removed by the HOA.  Karen
