local crafts     New England States have joined together to Stimulate our local regional economy.

All YOU have to do is join the campaign to be a part of the New England "10% shift"

The 10% Shift is a campaign of the New England Local Business Forum (NELBF), a coalition of local business organizations across New England that are working to build vibrant local economies.

It only takes a very small change in the way you allocate your purchases in 2009!

Did you know that if just 10% of us shifted 10 % of our budget, it could translate to millions of dollars being invested in New England in 2009?  Another side effect of buying local is that it will reduce carbon emissions, and promote sustainability in our local communities.  It also will strengthen the economic outlook of the Eastern Region.

A study by Civic Economics in Grand Rapids found that if 600,000 residents redirected 10% of their total spending to local business, it would create almost $140 million in new economic activity, create over 1600 jobs and over $50 million in new wages!

If you live in New England, you can begin to make the 10% shift by attending the Made in New Hampshire Expo, where you can find hundreds of local products.  The theme for 2009 is "Buy Local"  "Try It & Buy It"  Those who attend can sample and buy products made in the Granite State... wine, fine arts, fashion and unique specialty foods!

  • When:  The Buy Local Event will take place Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m and Sunday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where:  NH National Guard Armory, 1059 Canal St., Manchester, NH
  • Cost:  Adults $9, Kids $3 Seniors $9

Get more information and directions to the 14th Annual Made in New Hampshire expo.

In addition to all of the local business and goods there will be entertainment:

  • Tropical Sensations .. A steel drum band from Troy will make an appearance on Saturday, March 28 at 10:15 a.m.
  • Bucky Lewis -- a comedian who will make you laugh and take your mind off all the negative news will perform at 4 P.M. on March 28th.
  • Fritz Wetherbee -- New Hampshire's story teller from WMUR will be telling stories on Sunday March 29th.

If you do not in on the East Coast check to see if the businesses and citizens in your state are participating in the "10% shift" ... feel free to leave a link below.

Hi Joan, This is a marvelous undertaking and its about local and when you think back on this, it is the way things used to be. Neighbors would support local business of all kinds and they didn't need to drive across town or cross state borders. We have seen the culture change in our own life time but there looks to be a revival right in your area and it speaks so well of all of you. It is getting back to think and act local while the national economy can better  afford to think global and even there,  we need to bring our business back home.

Sally  The baskets are made of native woods.  Each of those white tags you see in the photo were inserted (temporarily) to identify the specific type of wood used to make the basket.  They are unique, beautiful and of coure, they are LOCAL.

William   What intriques me so much about the 10% shift is that it it is easy to do, helps main street and empowers local citizens to stimulate their local business and the economy.  At the same time,, as you point out, the national economy can continue on a global basis.  One side effect of this economic turmoil is that we may resdiscover some things we have lost along the way.   We all want to save some money, but I would rather spend a little more and support our local businesses, neighbors and jobs.

Bill  ~ If you are in New Hampshire, you should try to stop by the expo.  Do you know what MA is doing regarding the 10% shift?

Kat ~  I think it is a matter of awareness.  While we certainly live a global economy, it is gratifying to stimulate and support local businesses help them survive this economic cycle.  I LOVE the baskets too!  They are soooo unique and beautiful.

Joan - What a fantastic idea and a great event too.  You are doing a great service to the local business community by supporting them.  Those baskets are beautiful.  Have you seen those rose buds  made from wood also?  I saw them at the Oyster Festival here in my town and they are made in New Hampshire.

Joan,  One of Virginia's growing product lines is wine making.  The vineyards are replacing a lot of tobacco land and our wines are receiving all kinds of awards - I believe VA is now #3 in the US,  Karen

Karen ~   I have tasted a couple of those Virgina wines and they are good!  I think California now has a lot of competitiion.  That is also one thing I enjoy buying locally.

Hi Joan....very smart idea.  I feel the same about our small town of Titusville.  The city government does not do all it can to stimulate sales in our own back yard, so we take our discretionary income to Orlando or Merritt Island or Melbourne.  You would think this is rocket science.  Good post!

Gail:  Just take that photo of the bird with you and I think they will SEE things your way! (lol).  It will be interesting to see if people will make a shift and what impact it may have in the region.  Time will tell.
