There is great news for Fulton County , Ga.residents. The change in the Homestead Laws for the tax year 2009 provides homeowners an increase in basic homestead exemption from $15,000 to $30,000, which is spread out over the next three years. For 2009 the exemption is $20,000, 2010 the exemption amount will increase to $25,000 and by 2011 the basic homestead will increase to $30,000. If you are currently receiving the homestead exemption you do not need to apply, unless there is an ownership change. The new increase is automatically granted to homeowners who are currently receiving the exemption. In addition qualifying first time applicants will also be eligible.
In order to qualify for any exemption you must own and occupy the property as your primary residence as of January 1, 2009 and be a permanent legal resident of Fulton County. You must also provide a valid Georgia photo ID and a current copy of your Fulton County vehicle registration.
