I had a conversation yesterday with someone in regards to losing weight and staying fit. Lets face it as we get older it`s not easy to do and the temptation to splurge is always in the back of your mind!

Two years ago I was a waist size 40, weighted somewhere near 265 and felt like pure crap.

I was unmotivated, lacked stamina and overall didn`t care about my appearance.

One day I found a picture of my Father. He was a big hulking type of a guy who died unfortunately at the age of 49.

I remember he never bothered to worry about his health and that's when it hit me.

I had to make some changes in my dietary habits and force myself to get my "fat ass" into a gym.

At first I didn`t really enjoy forcing myself to work out and start watching what i ate. In fact the first 4 months I went at it all wrong, showed no results and pretty much was content to leave well enough alone.

Instead, I decided to push myself for two weeks and see if I could shed some weight.

I designed a weight training program for myself that mixed Cardio with pumping weights. I would move rapidly between free weights and machines with a 30 second rest in between. I also decided to exhaust myself silly rather than use what I call a "Time Clock" of doing sets.

I lost 5 pounds, felt better and began to realize this might work for me!

I started buying vitamins, drank Protein Shakes, watched everything I ate, stopped soda, and bread.

Ate less food, and increased my fruit intake as well. I eat pineapples and banana`s each day.The amount of vitamins in fruits is incredible.

I went from working out 3x`s a week to going to the gym 5-6 days a week.

I also increased my workout session from 45 minutes to 1.45.

Once you realize what you`re doing the rest is easy. The weight started to come off, my blood pressure and cholesterol level dropped, and my stamina increased. I look and feel much younger.

Today, I weigh 204 and i`m proud to say am a waist size 34.

I decided that if I want to watch my girls grow up it was time to invest in myself.

I`m glad I did.

Good for you...the only "good diet" is one that works...and that you can stay on...I have lost 100 pounds in the last year with needed medical intervention....I am no longer diabetic, no longer have sleep apnea....and a ton of energy that makes me feel decades younger...yahoo...you don't have to be "Twiggy" thin but healthy thinner is a good thing...congratulations...keep up the good work !

Scott,

I'm there a minimum of 3 times a week...using both weight training and cardio...my diet is a bit off on occasion but I hover around 200-205..I'm also 6'1" so at my height ...I'm considered at a good weight...the hard part is to lose the extra fat and only a very strict diet works and a little genetics too. I'm still not exactly where I want to be but can't complain because my stamina is more then average. Here's another tip for you to use.....just keep not showing up for our lunch appointments and you should be 180!

Scott,

Thank you for the blog on this. I'm 58 and having a devil of a time trying to get the weight off. I've decreased some things but should eliminate other things all together. I intuitively know when I make a bad choice, but sometimes the old habits are hard to stop. It's all mind over matter.

Anyway, your blog is something that I needed to read and once again point me in the right direction.

Thank you and continued good luck.

Scott...

Good for you. It's wonderful to have a goal and to accomplish it. Where have you been? ... haven't seen many posts lately!

Great job Scott. The one thing missing from my workouts is the cardio. I hate it, just can't seem to get myself to spend time doing it. I like lifting weights and go to the gym 5 times a week but I always seem to find an excuse not to go over to the treadmills and bikes. Any tips on how to make cardio fun?

Way to go Scott! Getting in shape isn't magic - though it is hard work. The only secret is getting your head in the right place. You're an inspiration!

Could you help me. The more freedom we enjoy, the greater the responsibility we bear, toward others as well as ourselves. I am from Serbia and learning to speak English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "This clock looks great on the wall or on a desk or tabletop by using the built in stand." With love :-), Patamon.

Greeting. The toughest thing about success is that you've got to keep on being a success. Talent is only a starting point in this business. You've got to keep on working that talent. Someday I'll reach for it and it won't be there. I am from Haiti and now teach English, tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Not also historically initial as the madarosis of male on the testosterone, stress, stimulant type, fluids of hair, and due types can not portray loss of length in the approaches." With respect :-(, Catalin.
