If you live in Maryland, chances are you're a Terps Fan. Moving to the area? Buy yourself a red tee shirt so you can help fill the stands with red!
We've been Terps football fans and season ticket holders for a number of years, and this year the Lady Terps have really grown on us.
If you watched the Sports Highlights last night (Saturday), you may have seen a segment on NCAA Women's Basketball and the one-woman show of Marissa Coleman as she scored 42 points in the 78-74 victory over Vanderbilt in the Sweet Sixteen. She willed and worked her team into the next round, where they will play #3 seed Louisville at 7 p.m. on Monday. (ESPN and ESPN2)
Most viewers were probably saying something to themselves like "Wow, impressive!" On the other hand, I was kicking myself for never uploading the photos so I could finish the post I started last week after the first-round game at Comcast Center. So now I'm going to actually post it, 'cause I had fun attending and fun bragging about our ACC Champs in the post.

Watching Kristi Toliver shoot from anywhere and nail it... dribble from one hand to the other seamlessly, or even behind her back... or pass (or receive a pass) in a direction she's not even looking is electrifying. At one point in Sunday's first-round NCAA Tournament game against Dartmouth, she had personally scored the same 23 points that the entire opposing team had on the board. With Kristi's shooting wizardry they were far enough ahead for Coach Brenda Frese to sit Kristi on the bench for the last 11+ minutes and give other players some tournament experience.
The other graduating senior on the team, Marissa Coleman, wasn't quite so "on fire" with her shooting this weekend, but no-one rebounds the way she does - and no one doubts her shooting game will be "back" for the next game. Marissa seems to jump higher and with more authority than players other women on the court and she has the ability to pull that ball under her control in the midst of many other hands time after time. During most games this season and throughout their parallel careers, she and Kristi have enjoyed a two-woman competition for the highest points scored in a game. In their last home game of the regular season, on Senior Night at Comcast Center, this duo combined for 30 points before any other Lady Terp scored, and they ended up with a total of 59 points in the 86-74 victory over Boston College. (Photo on the right was taken at Senior Night festivities after the game. L to R: Marissa, Coach Frese, Kristi. The lighting just doesn't work when I take a picture of subjects on the floor with my point/shoot camera.)
Last August, when I didn't know what to get my husband for his birthday, I purchased season tickets for the Lady Terps. The price was certainly right (I think they were a very affordable $65 for general admission tickets for the whole season). It turned out to be a gift of my time throughout basketball season, as we put my business and other matters aside to attend nearly every home game. Along the way, we had the opportunity to watch the Ladies win their first ACC Championship, and I can honestly say that we enjoyed every minute! Of course, it didn't hurt that they won every game we saw.
In case you're not a big basketball fan, let me bring you up to date: Maryland is the #1 seed in their region for the NCAA Championship and there's nothing that Terps fans would like more than to see Kristi and Marissa bookend their college careers with another National Championship as seniors, after winning one when they were freshmen on Kristi's buzzer-beater 3 pointer.
Tonight's second-round game at Comcast will be against Utah, who we saw play Villanova on Sunday. If both teams play the same as they did over the weekend, I suspect the Lady Terps will be headed to Round 3 in Raleigh.
We're very fortunate that Crofton is located within a half hour of the University of Maryland. Neither my husband nor I went to school there, but we still enjoy sporting events and other activities on campus. If there's a college or university near you, check out what they have to offer. You just may enjoy it as much as we do the games at Maryland!

13 Comments on Maryland's Lady Terps Advance to Elite Eight
This is the best time for sports fans I have been watching Michigan State Men and Women play for the last couple of weeks and enjoy how they play basketball. When the pros are playing I don't see the enthusiasm for the sport. Lets enjoy the next few games, We will have to wait until next year for the excitement to return.
WooHoo Margaret. Great news for the College Park and around the state areas. Good luck to them to the Final Four.
Margaret....we are looking into football tickets for GATech this year. Part of the campus is about a block from our condo, and the football stadium is walking distance! How cool is that? Not sure if we will get them, altho I heard they did not fill the staduim last year.
I suspect we will have "nose bleed" seats, but hey, if there's beer (oh wait, it's college football, they can't sell that can they.....UGH) Ok, I'll still go...maybe we can crash a frat party on the way!
How fun Margaret. We are huge sports fans as well and I love to go and see live events. You are fortunate to live close enough to go see the action.
Hi Margaret, I really enjoyed reading this and placing you in the middle of the action. Nothing shows "the who we are" better than when the fun side of us is revealed and especially when coupled with the passion for the HomeTeam. But you go even a step farther and refocus the attention on two standouts and the joy and even zeal you express truly entitles you to own the title of "Loyal Terp Fan".
Margaret.... wow, 42 pts.... hey, my Men's Louisville Cardinals lost today to Michigan State in the Elite 8 game. But the Lady Cardinals are still in it....and looking good also. You did a good job on this one...
Margaret- WOW! You know alot about the Lady Terps! YOu can tell by reading your post that you really enjoy the game.
Katerina - That's what happens when you attend every game of the season. LOL. The tickets are so affordable that lots of families and groups attend... maybe an experience worth having for the homeschoolers if there's a university in your area.
Jeff - Funny how one loses interest when their favorite is eliminated. I haven't watched the men play since MD lost.
William - We've had a lot of fun this season, although I admist to regretting this gift early in the season. I couldn't believe I had done this to myself through gift-buying laziness.
Kelly - I'm not that much of a sports fan, but I'm a big fan of the experience of going. A fine line, I know, but that's how I usually look at these games. Kristi and Marissa have made it fun to actually watch the games.
Thom and Ray - Hmmm.... ACC rivals of the Terps... we may have to talk about a friendly wager.
Gary - Thanks, it really would be great to see them make it. Tonight's game comes first, though.
Terry - You're absolutely right. College sports (and high school, too) is so much more entertaining to watch than professional - at least for us.
We will be watching them again tonight!
Wow Margaret I had no idea you were a fan of college basketball! Just the woman or men too?
Margaret - I am with everyone else.. didnt realize you were such a huge basketball fan. Sorry about the results this evening. They had a great run.
Sorry you folks didn't get to see them at their best in the Louisville game. A different team showed up... not the Lady Terps we've enjoyed all year.
Basketball fan? 'Guess I've become one this year. I'm really a fan of the game experience, not the sport - but this team has made me appreciate the skills and drive of these players.
Margaret: I am sooo bummed. Our Lady Terps lost. And yes, I think you are correct. Where's our "other" Lady Terps team ? I was really, really hoping they could go all the way. Poop ! Terpy Poop ! (Sorry to use such strong language...)
