I hope that all the new bloggers that are entering into the web world will make a mental note of what I feel is sound advice.  I also hope that all the veterans who are out there will take into consideration the correct way to use a blog.

  • Relating news about you.
  • Relating news about your area.
  • Relating sound advice about buying, selling, renting, investing, etc.
  • Announcing great new ideas, new developments, new homes for sale, etc.
  • Self-promoting. (don't be appalled, MY main objective is to promote ME and if yours isn't then you should stop blogging).

Now some of even the more brilliant bloggers sometimes forget that a blog (unless started for that reason) is not to be used to:

  • Pass judgement maliciously about another.
  • Personally attack another blogger and their supporters.

As sad as it is, these things do happen and more people wind up getting involved then should - but how do blogger friends keep quiet?  Natural instincts tend to want to defend, especially when testosterone is involved.

But here is what ultimately happens when you fall into the ugliness of this sort of Blogging.

  • You wind up looking like a scorned jealous person.
  • You make the other person look better than you.

My advice?

Be an adult.  If you have something to say about someone then say it to them not to the rest of the world, do it privately because I am sick of having my feed-reader filled up with high-school antics that do not appeal to me.

I provided no links to either party and they should be thankful that I did not.

Rock ON sister!  I fully agree.  I'm always happy to receive some scorn because I feel like that person now looks like an A_ _ and I have an opportunity to prove my maturity and professionalism.  Great blog.

Christine will you hear my confession now?

I have no idea what you are referring to but I did it on Actve Rain yesterday, not another re agent, no one in my market.  I  thought it would feel good but it just  feels icky.  It kept me up all night.  It does not help.

Abe Loper - Taking the high road is not the easiest thing to do at the time, but later when the dust settles - I am sure that person who did that - comes out smelling like roses.

Maureen - Ohh now you have sparked my curiousity.  YOU?  You are one of the nicest people I know - I am sure if you did anything of the sort - it was because you were pushed to the absolute limit!  Its hard not to fight back - trust me I KNOW.  I have the temper of my family, but one thing that I have learned when I mad is that I never react in the best way that I can.  So I always have to walk away, regain and then go back.  I hate myself with I react .. I agree - it feels icky!

There are a number of the "Old Timers" who I respect greatly for their genuine kindness and consideration, clearly evident in their blog.   But, being from Pittsburgh, I can appreciate some good quality sarcasm now and again, where sarcasm is an art-form.

Personal attacks are, without question, wrong, but how much humor or true intent can be lost with the written word?   Some of us (yours truly) simply cannot always convey the emotion or intent of a post.  There are a number of other very popular bloggers who I can have a difficult time understanding - Not from a comprehension aspect, but from intent.

This whole thing has evolved into a chess match of sorts with everyone striving for the same goal.  Because we are "exposing" ourselves more than we ever have before, we are opening ourselves up to criticism.  Is that bad?  I guess that's human nature.

It would probably be a good idea for everyone to adhere The Golden Rule to the top of their computer screen.  A picture of your mom or other loved one facing you while typing has a remarkable affect to keep things on the straight and narrow as well.

Stacey, I like that, a picture of your Mom taped to your computer screen.

Great post Christine,

I do agree that blogs are so public that we have to be careful about what we say.  We know that once a word comes out of our mouth it can't be taken back.

But when a word comes out of our brain onto our blog it is even worse.  It is broadcast to the world and it's there for good.  Google will be able to still find it years from now.  That's a scary thing.

I posted on my off-AR blog and then thought better of it and deleted the post from the blog.  But it was too late, that post is still out there even though it isn't on my personal blog.   Lesson learned, I try very hard now not to post or make a comment that I wouldn't want broadcast to the world.

Christine, you couldn't have put it better.  Posting negative blogs OR comments don't do anything for the support we all look to achieve on AR.  If you have something to say to someone about something bothering you, a nice email would suffice....and be private.  Thanks for a great post.

The antics are enough to make me want to bury my head in the sand and stay in my own sandbox....which is exactly the anthesis of what Web 2.0 is about.

I was just thinking about this subject today, in response to a recent comment.  You're timely as always!  Thanks.
