Love this - read it and (try not to) weep!

I felt compelled to write this since I just read 4 featured poseyests here on Active Rain that had numerous typos within them.  Many people have written posts about using the spell-check function on your blog posts.  AR has one on their WYSIWYG editor and there is always one on Word or whatever else you're using to write your posts, but spell-check doesn't catch everything.  It's important, too, to proofread your posts as well, for best appearances.

Now I know that everyone makes an occasional typo that gets missed.  Coming from an editing background, I can tell you that even the copy editors miss a few from time to time.  Some words, even when mistyped, look right.  Sometimes, it's the wrong word, but it still looks right to the mind's eye.  And because of my background, I probably do tend to notice more than some.

Still, having too many typos and 'wrong' words in a post can make a negative impact on the reader.  Especially important is the topic of the post.  If you're writing about improving your listing presentation (or blog post) and one of the key elements that you suggest is not making "stupid" typing mistakes, then it's probably a good idea for you NOT to make them in your post.  And most notably, not within the section where you say it's a bad idea!

As far as 'wrong' words, I'm talking about putting in one word that means something else.  For example, when someone gets an offer that they like and they want it, they ACCEPT that offer, not EXCEPT it.  A more common example on real estate sites is the misuse of the terms 'sell' and 'sale.'

A really good blog post can quickly become worthless in the mind of a reader, if they feel like they have to continually try to determine what the writer meant with this or that because of typo's or the misused word.  So, proofread your way to a better blog post and make the right kind of impact on your reader.

You are so right.  My problem, besides poor eyesight, is that I tend to read what I intended to write, which is not always what has actually been typed....esecially when the first and last letter of the word are correct and the other letters are out of order.

Suzanne - we all make mistakes, some of us more than others. I always write my posts in Word first so that works pretty well. But despite I often find things I missed. Or others point them out, which is a nice thing to do and I always appreciate it. I think some folks get more upset by typos than others, and to some extent they are not all that unusual in the blogging world. Thanks for sharing this.

I know exactly what you are saying.  When I worked on a Broker's Open flyer, I sent it to another agent and I said "I need you to proof it because I am not a good speller"  she wrote back and said " you can spell, you just can't type!"  I had all the right letters in the words, just not the right order  :)

It is difficult for the writer to be the editor of their own work. Since we do not always have the option of an "editor" I would agree that proofreading is important.  Sometimes I get ahead of my fingers leaving out words which can make it difficult for a reader as well. I like the post; good point to remember, thanks for sharing.

I commented on the original and feel compelled to comment here too.  I'm the worst, but I do proof read, just don't always catch the errors.

Suzanne - Great post.  I have to agree with you both on spelling and word usage.  I have seen blogs where "Affect" (a verb) and "Effect" (noun) were used incorrectly.  Also "there" (location) and "their" ( denotes possession) are used improperly.

I get in a hurry sometimes and violate my own advice of proofreading my work.  It really doesn't take much time to do it you just have to make it a habit.

Suzanne, careful.  Those 'copy police' haters may storm this blog any minute now. :-)  Thanks for the re-blog.  Have fun.
