Tuesday Tech Tip: Screen Capture

screen captureHave you ever wondered how bloggers make those great-looking screen shots?  You know - when they show you exactly where on the page the specific item is located or exactly what to do, step-by-step?

Well, thanks to Tuesday's Tech Tip, now YOU can do it too!

Here are a few options, some free, some not, for you to give a whirl.  If you've used them, I'd love to hear your experience with the service.  If you decide to give one of these a try, please let me know which you tried and how it worked out for you!

Happy Screen Capturing!

Prt Scrn - on keyboard - absolutely Free! In the upper right corner of your keyboard, there is a button that says "PrtScn" which accomplishes this very thing. It copies the screen to your clipboard.  You can then paste it into Windows Paint or any other media-type program.  (Did I mention it was free?)

(I have never used the rest of these but have heard they are great for doing screen shots.)

Renae - I have been using Jing for about a year now and it's great! It's got my endorsement. And it's free.

If your "print screen" key has a line with something else under the line, then you'll have to hold the shift key down and then hit the print screen key, as I have to do with both keyboards here in my office.

If you've got an extra wide screen, when you paste your screen shot into some programs, you'll lose the extra wide part. So before you paste, try to set your graphics program to a bigger page rather than just 8½x11 inches. For example, use the tabloid size or something like 17x22. Since you're not going to print, it doesn't really matter what size it is. Then you can scroll the graphic and crop it to just what you want to show. Then you can use a picture resizer to reduce the picture to something like 640x480 without losing quality.

Print screen is the very best. I use it for playing jokes on friends. I'll take a print screen of their desktop and make that their back ground picture.

Then I'll hide all their desk top icons and let the fun ensue.

Its so funny to see people not realize why clicking on an icon doesn't work.

Of course, I always fix it and look like a hero. It's nerdy fun I know.

Renae, I have Vista, so I use the Snipping Tool.  I'd never give up Vista because I can't do without it.  The Snipping Tool allows me to copy whatever is on the screen, crop it, and then paste it into an e-mail or save it as a JPEG file.

Renae,

I have been using 5Clicks ( http://www.screen-capture.net/ ) for a number of years.   There is a free 30 day trial and then it only costs $9.95.   It just allows the copy and saving of anything on your screen.

Everyone has our favorite and needs to find what works for them.

Hi Renae, Jarte is another which I have used....has other good features too.  I did a post on this 2 or 3 months ago if you're interested.  Just heard about Screen Hunter yesterday - FREE as well.  An important feature for me is the ability to be be able to select what part of the screenshot I want to use and discard the rest.

I used to have all sorts of print screen software until someone pointed out to me the print screen key on the keyboard. Consequently, I quit collecting print screen software.
