migraine colorsI've had migraines since I was tiny... at least 5.  Two to 3 a week.  When I didn't have a migraine, I felt crappy - tight shoulders, tight neck, throbbing base of my neck. Generally like I wanted to lie on the couch all day, but I didn't. Yet I was so happy to not have a migraine, I paid no attention. Never dawned on me it might be something I was eating. But I've discovered 13 nondescript, bizarre little stealth bombers that are the culprits. Things like guar gum, red wine vinegar (not balsamic, thank god), and whey.  Go figure.

How did I do it?  I read a book called Eat Right for Your Type, about what foods conflict with the 4 blood types.  Sounds pretty hocus pocus, if you ask me. But I liked the things on my "good for you" list (meat, veggies, fruits, no dairy, no wheat, no spuds... I'm an "O"). I could handle it.  I went cold turkey, reading every label thoroughly, and making lists of ingredients that didn't bother me, and those that did.  It took 2 years.

I had figured out on my own that whey gave me migraines (and eating betaine enzymes helped with that), but not the other stuff.  I started noticing I was feeling pretty good... consistently.  Like.. a normal neck and loose shoulders.  Like... great!  Dang, I liked it!  I didn't know people could feel this way.  WooHoo, I can tackle the world.  I'm raring to go!

First I noticed guar gum.. WHAT IN THE HELL'S THAT!.  Then, capers... pffffuuhh... I love capers. Then sunflower oil, red wine vinegar, all cheeses except mozarella, feta and farmer's (yeah, so pizza's mostly out), and arabic gum, for crying out loud.  Who ever heard of that?  But my blood had, and they were mortal enemies. My blood went into attack mode, bringing out the heavy artillery to fight off the invaders, wreaking havoc in my brain.

Short Circuit chickSo how did it take me 57 years to figure this out?  I honestly never had a clue it was what I ate.  From the time I was little, they poked, prodded, hooked me up to needles, you name it.  "Oh, your daughter has a mild brain anomaly,... a short circuit, so to speak.  Let's put her on phenobarbital, see if that helps." I was 10.

Other drugs and mumbo jumbo came and went, all to no avail.  It was still 2 - 3 a week.  There was no test that gave a definitive answer.  Fortunately Imitrex came along a relieved the migraines, but nothing stopped the funky feeling.  The sad part is how I would never commit myself to anything where I would need to be counted on, because i didn't know how I would feel.  I'm amazed I tackled college, but remember sitting through finals on the verge of puking, and dropping my grade a whole notch in a class I adored and should have aced.

Today?  I'm Queen of the World!!!!! I feel great! (cept when one of those pesky villains slip into my food). I have so much energy, I'm exhilarated, and so charged up I can barely stand it! The down side?... I'm a real hit at dinner parties - I don't eat it if I can't read it.  Otherwise I pay the price for 1-1/2 days. And going out to eat is no fun any more.  Small price to pay, however, for finally finding bliss.

Woo Hoo..... Big time!

Sally ~ This is what we have to do these days! Good for you. I diagnosed my own Celiac Disease! Several years ago I started with stomach pains which a gastro doctor couldn't even figure out; a new internist who said it sounds like IBS and (on meds to help with that) still had pain and "episodes".  Until I read that people with Celiac Disease are most often diagnosed with IBS, Colitis, Crohns and it can take up to 9 years for a proper diagnosis of CD.  A simple change in diet could help confirm it in a couple of weeks as could a blood test.

After two weeks of following a gluten free diet I felt fantastic.  So much so that it actually changed my mood!  I then visited my doctor, told her what I'd done and she sent me for a blood test.  It came back positive for Celiac Disease!  It does stink though because, like you, I can't have pizza or any flour product made with wheat, rye or barley.

I think we know our own bodies better sometimes.

Kathy... awesome that you figured it out. Glad you are feeling better.  We really have to take charge, and be open to other ideas.  My well-meaning Mom always gave me cheese when I was in bed with a migraine. "You  need the protein to get rid of the headache", she would say.  Now I know that's why the migraine stayed for so long, and was so violent.

Sally,

Glad to know you found the key.

I, too, have type O blood, but eat all those things that you've eliminated. I experience optical migraines from time-to-time, but not others.

I've heard chocolate is linked to migraines. I'll live with migraines before I give up chocolate.

Chocolate doesn't bother me at all.  In fact dark chocolate is agood for type Os... in moderation of course!  But I eat a ton of it!

Hi Sally, I'm so happy that you figured it out-- and without a bunch of mind numbing drugs.  I have never had migraines, but they sound miserable.  Why doesn't every doctor in the world know about this blood type diet, I wonder??

Very interesting Sally.  I'm going to order the book.  Migraines run in my family.  I kept a journal for months and finally figured out that mine are usually triggered by smells.  Diesel fuel and asphalt being the worst of the known triggers. But I still have the neck issues and so does my daughter and I'm certainly willing to change my diet to feel better.  Thanks for sharing.

Mary and Tammy - I can't tell you what a difference that book made in my life, as it put focus on food items I had never even thought of. And Mary, I asked my doctor what he thought of the book concept... he said "those fad diets never work".  I think it's because there is no money to be made in having you adjust your diet, so there aren't many people doing the hard research.  Da Damo (I forget how he spells his name D'Damo?) has been researching this for decades, along with his father.

Personally, I could give a rip about the research... all the research I need is how glorious I feel... all because of the pointers in his book.  since you improve your overall health, and the workings throughout your system, EVERYTHING works better.  You quit your body fighting with itself.  Digestion, allergies... you name it, that area will improve.  Maybe not be cured, but you will quit aggravating what ails ya.

HI SALLY!  My friend suffers from migraines and she linked it to cheese products.  When she cut out cheese products and modified her diet - she was  "Woo Hoo too"!  -- Glad you are doing good!  Gabrielle

Thanks Gabrielle - and kudos to your friend.  There's a pretty interesting artistic person who posts photos at flickr.com called "migraine chick".  She is obviously so talented with her graphics.  It kills me to see someone suffer with them, and to suffer so much that she has that as her on-line persona is so sad.  I vote we abolish them!

Sally, so very glad you played detective and with all your hard work figured this out. Migraines are so debilitating for sure.

In a way, though, I don't regret a lifetime of them.  They taught me to soldier up and just keep on going.  I took the attitude that I was going to feel like crap whether I was home in bed with a frozen washcloth on my eyes, or off doing something.  Nothing made me feel better, so why not build memories of something other than my room. Thye rarely kept me from doing something.  I jsut puked a lot!

I remember going to a concert with my friends during a migraine.  As I sat there, I felt like dying, with the pounding rythym, but knew I would have the ability to remember the concert and my friends, and forget the pain once it was over.  And that's what happened.  Much better memories than of my bed.

Now, however, I'm "out of shape" to deal with the pain, and I turn into a whiny baby! Fortunately, there's Imitrex to keep me from getting a full blown one!

Thanks, Randy... but not as ecstatic as I am!  I'm so sorry for your Mom.  I know they are not all food related, but I'm sure many are, and would not be surprised if most are at least aggravated by the foods we unknowingly eat..

Okay Sally...

I found myself wondering if other things in your body can go wrong because you're not eating according to Blood type. Looks like the next time I'm in the health food store I'll grab that book. Congrats on finding the cure. Just really sorry to see what you had to go through to get there. That kinda sucks.

TLW...ROAR!

TLW - Absolutely on the whole health thing.  I know of your health stuff this year, and have been following along.  In fact I have a client who is going thru the same thing, her surgery is coming up... I told her about your photo your posted...."EEWWW" she said!

I would WAY encourage you to give it a try.  When you eat the foods that agree with your blood, everything gets better, because the fight is not going on.    You'll still have the same diseases, but they will no longer be aggravated by innocent food.  For me (I wasn't going to go into detail, but since you asked... OK, you didn't ask, but here it is anyway)...all these things got better...

*less hot flashes, *smoother and softer skin *lost 26 pounds, although they are creeping back now that I'm loosened up on the things that don't make me feel bad * fewer skin goobers (white heads and stuff) * WAY more energy *cholesteral went down 30 or 40 points (the bad one went down a bunch, and the good one went up 6) *puffyness in the skin of my face went away.  Uhhhh... I know there's more.  My broker dropped 100 points of cholesteral, and his blood pressure went to normal, with no drugs.

So crack that whip on your diet TLW... it can't hurt.

Sally:  I'm buying this book on Amazon today.  I am a migraine sufferer and haven't really figured out my triggers yet.  And your whole thing about having to read labels reminds me of the torment my husband has gone through trying to avoid sucralose (Splenda) and some other things since he's been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder.  It's amazing what you learn about what you've been eating when you have a health issue.

Chris Ann - I hope it's helpful for you.  It's been life-changing for me.  I don't follow ALL the guidelines, but in general I do.  Those 13 or so things, however, I 100% absolutely avoid, or I pay for it.  And all of them are from the "do not eat" list of my blood type, except of 1.  I find that the highest form of testimonial.  If you want tips on how to go about figuring it all out, email me.

I'm going to look for that book.  I suffered migraines from my early thirties on.  No longer have them, other than the occasional visual variety.  Mine were triggered by hormones, but devastating in their effect.  In the eating for your blood type, would the foods be the same whether you're positive or negative?  I'm O negative and have been suffering some really strange symptoms for the past year and a half.  After going to all kinds of specialists who can't seem to figure it out, I've been trying to pin it down on my own.  I have no doubt at least part of it is food related.  There are many days when I just feel horrible and simply put one foot in front of the other to get through the day.

Geri - buy the book today.  You don't have to do EVERYTHING, but the list will point out the foods to keep an eye on.  i started out cold turkey for a few days, with just a few things i ate over and over... then noticed I felt great.  (Except my eyes from reading all those teeny, tiny labels)  Then started to add things in.  It took 2 years, but i got it down now.

The positive and negative don't matter.  Just the O.  You are meat, veggies, fruits, and stay away from spuds, dairy, wheat (just in general)  My stealth bombers are all tiny little things... like nutmeg.  go figure.

Start with the basic book - it explains the whole concept of how blood types evolved, and lays an incredible amount of logi over a goofball-sounding concept.

Let me know how it turns out.  while you may not be completey feeling better (who knokws what it's from), I guarantee you there will be progress as your blood will quit fighting.

Ha ! Sal this is GREAT !!! ... My wife and I are habitual members of the Migraine Society, and while I dont get them even nearly as regularly as I used to, maybe it is because of what you mentioned - changes in my diet ???

... my wife cut out red wine and it seemed to help a lot, but there must be other triggers too, as she gets them more regularly than me, and has big migraine horse pills she has to take.

For me, Excedrin Migraine often softens the blow and allows me to ride it out....

Great info Sweet Potatah !!!!!

Cheers :o)

Sheldon - As if you couldn't figure it out from my post.... it was the discovery of different ingredients to consider that was the big breakthrough.  Guar gum was not on ANY doctor-provided lists of trigger foods, but it sure is for me.

One thing about us migraine sufferers, we REALLY appreciate feeling good.  I NEVER take it for granted.
