Those that know me pretty well; also know that I'm not given to fits of melancholy.  However, there are times when I will get really busy with work and activities, which demand my attention for a period of time.  When this sometimes happens I get frustrated that I can't get away from it all.

I have a little secret.  I have one of those little Magellan GPS gadgets in my car.  When I have itchy feet and want to go somewhere, but can't possibly get away, I will put a destination address into the GPS gadget.  It's like my little mental get away bank.  Then when time permits, and I can escape my environment, I jump in the car, and push destinations, close my eyes, and poke the screen, press "driving instructions" and GO!

Today I managed a short little destination, up the road about 7 miles from my home, to the little Greater Sacramento community of Old Town Folsom.  Folsom is much more than a prison town made famous by Johnny Cash and his song, "Folsom Prison Blues."  It's a California Gold Rush town, a Railroad Town, and was the Western Terminus of the Pony Express.  We also have Folsom Lake and Folsom Dam.

Old Town Folsom has remained much the same since the 1850s, with little change being seen on historic Sutter Street.  There are antique shops, great little cafes and restaurants, and a delightful ice cream shop.

I took some pictures and created the little animation above, to provide you with a slide show glimpse.

The Folsom History Museum is located right next to the Assay Office (pictured in the slide show).  They have a wonderful website, which provides great historical facts about the area: Folsom History Museum

I didn't know Johnny's song was about a city in CA.  Somehow I figured it would be in Texas or Arkansas.  Nice blog and pictures too!

Jack and Izzy - Glad you liked it!

Barbara - Actually, you may be right about the song.  As it turns out, it was another of Johnny's songs, "Folsom Prison Blues" that was written for his performance at the prison.  But, also know he performed "I Walk The Line" there also. I've edited the song titled in the blog to reflect your correction.

Hi Myrl!
I don't know how you did that slideshow thing...but very cool!  I love old Folsom, even though I have only been there twice!  It is a fun little town!  Have you ever gotten your GPS to direct you to Grass Valley or Sutter Creek?  Very fun as well!

Like Paula I am intriged by the slide show. Can you teach us how to do it? :O)

Paula - Yes, I've been to Sutter Creek and Grass Valley.

Trey -I use Paint Shop Pro's Animation Wizard to do the animations.  It's a rather straight forward process, of selecting a series of pictures you want in the animation via the wizard, which places them in separate frames, and then combines them together into an animated .gif.

Myrly - what a wonderful habit to have using your GPS for a little jaunt and these photos took me away on a little vacation today. So enjoyed it!

Would love to see you post this "getaway" to the new AR group I started http://activerain.com/groups/REEL2REALTORS

Janice - When my brain is having a time out, I can use the GPS to send me on mini vacations via autopilot.

Toula - I've had even a 20 minute ride clear the cobwebs.

Myrl- Love the photos and the story. Thank you for sharing how you did the slide show. Going to give that a try. And I know how you feel about a time out. Unfortunately for me I wait so long for one that by the time I do take one I am exhausted and do nothing but sleep. need to plan them quicker so I too can enjoy some special places like you.
