Psychology 101....A Prerequisite to Becoming a Realtor!

The one thing that the pre-licensing realtor class forgot to mention in their syllabus was that if you intend to practice real estate, you MUST know Psychology 101.

As agents, we are known as the air of authority on the entire process of buying a home. With that comes finance questions, offer questions, inspection questions, closing questions, and every other question imaginable. So, it's important to understand the psychology behind the question. Your clients aren't calling at 11:30 p.m. because they want to intrude on your personal time, they are calling because deep down they have a fear about the process and they need the PROFESSIONAL to help them overcome it. I.E...Psychology 101!!

One of the things I love MOST about my profession is that I get the pleasure of living my purpose of helping myself and others grow by showing the truth in a graceful and honorable manner, to set new standards and lead by example. I'm fortunate enough to turn those late night calls into an opportunity to live my purpose.

So, when you get your next worried call, question or concern, remember they are looking to you to provide them with the best possible advise and turn it into an opportunity to COACH your clients, not critique them. Not only will you feel rewarded, but your clients will appreciate your dedication and compassion to an issue, no matter how big it really is, is REALLY important to them.

Good Morning - that is actually my college background - a BA in Psychology and grad in counseling.  Yes, we do have to listen and give support words and hand hold.  That is part of the experience and relationship.  Put them at ease and help them come to conclusions in a thoughtful way.  Great post!

I didn't think an agent realizes how much psychology goes into the job until they start working with clients. There are times I feel like a therapist to my clients.

Good post. We have to remember how stressfull it is for the seller and the buyer. Stress sometimes makes people do crazy stuff...

Thanks for the post.  Unfortunately, some of my sellers are requiring me to take graduate psychology courses as 101 just wont do it.

Managing expectations, helping to stablize people (buyers, sellers, other realtors) when a surprise pops up and helping all remember that we really do all have the same goal = successful purchase & sale of a property.  Seems pretty simple yet with personalities, personal life stresses, etc.  it is amazing what will show up and how we as the center of the wheel get the opportunity to coach people.  Nice post.

I love the Giving tree.  It is very similar to real estate, and how we keep getting cut down, and when it is to late the point of our real estate career we give it up.  Don't every give up, and always remember how you became a success.  Do you know what the problem with people is they are people.

Winter, very good point.  People really do want you to hold their hand all through the process.  Have a great day.
