"Imitation is the Insincerest Form of Robbery"

plagerismWell it seems there’s been quite some buzz about plagerism!  Yes it’s true, and a few of you here on the Rain have made a few boo-boos whether knowingly or not.  Here’s aplagerism rundown of what is considered plagerism, and do you give credit to your source?

Some common examples of plagiarism are:

  • copying someone else's words without using quotation marks and citing (giving credit to) the source,
  • paraphrasing or summarizing someone else's words without citing the source,
  • quoting someone else's words inaccurately,
  • restating someone else's original or specialized ideas without citing the source,
  • misrepresenting someone else's words or ideas,
  • citing the wrong source, and
  • pretending someone else's work is your own.

The written word isn't the only thing that can be plagiarized. You also must credit the sources of images, graphics, charts, drawings, video, music, etc.  ANYTHING NOT YOUR OWN.

plagerismJust a friendly reminder to stay vigilant and credit people with quotes and links when you use their material in your posts.

Thank-you for the reminder, my daughter brought it to my attention a while back.

Question: When is PERMISSION required in addition to GIVING CREDIT?

I believe (and will double check) that you cannot use anything if it states permission required obviously without their permission.  I know that a few mortgage companies have done charts and they do not grant permission.  Others require links back and permission.

Lyn: Do you think that most of it is intentional or just ignorance?

Sandy:  I want to see the best in people but I'm split 50/50.  I've always wondered how people can take our MLS data and copyright it in a nice looking format and then copyright it.  Zillow, etc. takes data from all over the place and then considers it their own.

Randy:  Please, copy and paste all you want.  I love someone with a sense of humor.

yes you are so correct on this I see a lot of people "stealing" peoples thoughts...and using them without giving credit to that person...and to answer Sandy I would say most of it is just ignorance...peace zane

I've written many books over the years and it is and always will be a problem I believe. I don't think you can write something without someone stealing it and not giving you credit. As soon as you get one to stop, there will be someone else to take their place.

George, congratulations on your success.  With the internet as both a valuable resource and a plague I believe that this will happen more and more.  Often times, articles or posts are 'scraped' and after awhile you don't know who's original work belongs to whom.  A complex subject that is going to get worse I believe in the future.  The 'I'll steal your work or material because I think I should be entitled to it' is all to prevalent these days.
