Overnight Google Changed how it Displays Video in SERPs -- Video SEO

If you have been using video this is really good news for you because Google appears to be finally approaching a universal search. That is Google is still returning the most relevant result but multimedia options are becoming available. This is still a limited rollout and not every video is going to do this but you can try. Right now there isn’t much rhyme or reason to why certain videos stick out. Some are speculating that when it comes to YouTube the number of views could actually increase rankings. That makes sense in a way, the more popular a video might mean the most relevant result and more likely to be searched for.

Check out this search result below. I can tell you one thing for certain this happened like the flick of a switch a couple weeks ago. I meant to post this then but I got busy with a few other projects. I searched one day and had the same search window and Google announced a few changes that day in the snippet they use and ran the same search and suddenly a thumbnail appeared. There have been thumbnails for some time but they were usually restricted to the first result. I have seen thumbnails now on the 2nd page of results as well as in different positions such as the 9th position.

What does this mean for you?

Well if you have videos you can use traditional SEO techniques to push yourself up the ranks. Also as results go a thumbnail certainly sticks out on a page. This should lead to higher clickthroughs and more traffic to your site if you utilize it correctly. How do you do that? Get your butt on YouTube and start cranking out videos. Use whatever marketing techniques you like and leverage your social networks to increase viewership. This will increase the ranking for the video. Make sure you use relevant titles and think of your important keywords when you name them. Add tags to further increase how your video is seen by search engines. Make sure you geotag the video as well because an additional goal of video SEO is to get your videos appearing on Google maps as well. This technique works as a global approach to SEO. You are literally putting your stuff everywhere.

I can see that you've laid out some of the dots and connected them.  But have you found this to be a good prospecting tool?  Is it worth it if you've got good SEO already?  Advice appreciated!

The goal will be if you have video on your website that in the results page a thumbnail appears. This will increase your traffic for sure compared to sites with no thumbnail. I wrote this post 2 months ago in my head and the goal then was to advise people to get ready. I thought if you were laying the SEO ground work then by now it would rank well and have a huge advantage. I had a few technical issues but then Google did a slight change. Any day they could open the flood gate so to speak and videos would appear in search results next to text results. This is just a tiny trickle so far of the total flood. (my flickr account was deleted today and I am boycotting that site and dont have time to mess with the images right now in case you are wondering why the post looks funny lol)

Video has been a big help SEO wise even before the latest developments with the right tags and subject matter. Anyone waiting to get on board, you're missing the boat if you don't just dove tail videos into your marketing/branding.

I think if you are doing video tours of houses on youtube and you have videos of yourself there as well there is a natural migration between the two using your account and profile there. Its not necessarily happening now as much but it will catch on quick.

Shane thanks for the tip. Google has a vested interest in seeing YouTube expand and we benefit. Great! Yes, I agree with others that video is a natural extension of marketing.
