Check out this search result below. I can tell you one thing for certain this happened like the flick of a switch a couple weeks ago. I meant to post this then but I got busy with a few other projects. I searched one day and had the same search window and Google announced a few changes that day in the snippet they use and ran the same search and suddenly a thumbnail appeared. There have been thumbnails for some time but they were usually restricted to the first result. I have seen thumbnails now on the 2nd page of results as well as in different positions such as the 9th position.

Make sure you geotag the video as well because an additional goal of video SEO is to get your videos appearing on Google maps as well. This technique works as a global approach to SEO. You are literally putting your stuff everywhere.
