A few years ago, I was working on an energy efficient new construction.  Using alot of products that people didn't know a lot about then...  One of them that I really love is the soy-based foam insulation

Quietwater Creek Soy-based foam insulation application

The product is sprayed on as a liquid, then expands up to 100 times its original size!  That's a lot of expansion!  It gets everywhere!  Even in the odd angles and tiny cracks.  It's very effective for sound reduction of outside noise.  It's great for maintaining more constant temps.  I've found the house to be incredibly quiet and the temperature really does stay more even than any of my remodel projects and for much longer!

Perhaps the thing I love best is driving home a few days after a winter storm and seeing the houses on the north and south of mine with melted roofs.  Mine will still have a thick layer of snow where you can see roofing material showing through on theirs.  And these houses were built one and two years after mine, the angle to the sun and wind exposure is very similar!  The difference being that they didn't use the blown foam insulation.  I will not build without it again!

It goes around and behind the can lights and makes for a seal that usually is a real insulation break.

The conservation expert from the local utility district estimates conditioned air costs for this home about 50% of average for this size during the peak months.  It's much less during the shoulder seasons as the temps remain so constant.

The white walls are the blocks for insulated concrete forms (ICF).  A construction method that is a blog post in itself!

Nothing beats quality insulation work in trying to build an energy efficient  home.  Also folks need to plan carefully how their home is placed on the homesite.  Orientation to the sun and breezes is as important as the "view".

Hi Trey--I don't seem to be getting notices for comments!  Yes, site orientation is huge.  On this lot, there are neighbors to the south and the view/creek are to the east.  It actually worked out really well as the morning sun warms the house nicely!

No Gary--It doesn't rot or smell (except during application!)

Hey Lynn--It does reduce costs by a lot.  No leakage in any of the typical places that you find with fiberglass insulation.

soy??? I would be concerned that it might be tastey for bugs looking for that soy mocha late fix???

I do like the idea of the expanding foam insulation It makes GREAT sense!

Hi Rob--They claim bugs don't like it and since I'm vegan, I haven't tried the soy mocha late night fix either... Now I know where to go when the coffee shop is closed!!! ;-)  Seriously though, the soy insulations still have a high petroleum content and I'm assuming that's why bugs don't like it.  Here's another article with a lot of research on the types of products and content out there soy foam insulation.  What I can tell you is that it makes for a very comfortable, quiet environment and my heating bills are 50% of what the local utility district conservation expert says is "typical" of a house this size!
