Here's a good article from Lancaster City Living's latest newsletter, courtesy of Michael Sprunger, Executive Director.

It doesn't take much looking around to notice that things have been changing for the better in Lancaster. Construction seems to be in the works at every turn. In fact, Lancaster Newspapers observed, at the end of 2006, that "Lancaster is hot". The real estate market is in close pusuit. Houses are selling for more and spending less time on the market than before. It also doesn't take much to remember the mid-90's when nearly 900 city properties were on the market at one time. At this writing, there are fewer than 140 single-unit houses available.
A survey of Lancaster's city residential properties, conducted by the Lancaster County Geographical Information Survey (GIS), at the request of this organization, reveals that the city-wide rate of properties occupied by their owners stands at about 63%.
To help support the development of a healthy city, this number needs to be higher. And, to market the city to the groups most likely to respond to the message of homeownership, Lancaster City Living will be taking a close look at the pool of potential homebuyers for the city. We know that the nationwide trend of "urbanization" has occurred mainly among younger professionals and retirees. But, is this accurate for Lancaster?
Beginning this year, Lancaster City Living will be conducting the first of an annual survey among new homeowners to see how this market is growing and changing. This data will allow Lancaster City Living to best target its efforts to reach the individuals and families that will populate the Lancaster of tomorrow.
