I'd been trying to get into The Host by Stephenie Meyer for a few weeks now, (okay, months!) and I was finally able to make it to the 1/4 mark this week and I'm now sucked in.  My husband bought it for me for Valentine's Day, and while the chocolate that had accompanied the extremely thoughtful gift is long since gone, the book sat quietly on the shelf waiting for me to pick it up.

I'm not sure if it was because of the expectation I set for it due to my love of the Twilight series, but it was really hard for me to connect to the main character.  Maybe because the main character has a dual identity, or because the initial story line is not based on reality as we know it?

Has anyone else read this book?
Did you have the same trouble I had getting into it?

One thing I will say though, I feel a lot less like a creepy old mom reading a teen romance novel now that I don't feel like gushing about Edward and Bella to anyone that would listen.

I haven't read this one yet, Julie.  I only recently got sucked into the Twilight series.  As a mother of a teenage son, we both got sucked into the Harry Potter series pretty quickly.  But, he wasn't interested in the Twilight series.  I only picked it up after a good friend recommended it to me.  I do enjoy the Twilight series, but Stephenie Meyer's writing seems to take at least 100 pages or so to get into on any of the books.

One should read anything that makes them happy -- we all need a bit of escape.

Julie I enjoyed the Twilight series but I had a hard time getting into the first book it took me about 100 pages to get hooked. I have been wondering about The Host. I have thought about picking it up so I was interested to hear what you thought about it. How are you liking it now that you go past the slow part?

Julie, I read The Host and it took me a little while to get into it, but once I did I reallt enjoyed it. I felt it was very different from her Twilight books.
