Some of my followers have probably noticed that I have been MIA on Twitter for a while.  The title of the post came from a conversation with @terilussier earlier today and it was really interesting because I've been thinking the exact same thing.

The picture to the left was created by @paulchaney some time ago when Twitter users were outraged with getting the Fail Whale every 30 seconds or so.

But none of these explain why I have become so disenchanted with Twitter.

When I finally 'got' Twitter I thought it was really neat.  I could follow people that I found to be really interesting and read articles that I had missed - I could also stay in touch with other ActiveRain members and Pals from everywhere.

After a while Congress got on Twitter, Celebrities hopped on Twitter.... And then along came all of the Experts and they are still flocking to the site.  Following.  Everyone. Then immediately UnFollowing.

Actually, I started waiting a few days to follow some people back to see if they were actually 'real' followers.

My entire Twitter stream is full of

  • How to brand yourself on Twitter
  • Why you should be on Twitter
  • How to use Twitter
  • How NOT to use Twitter
  • Why you should follow everyone
  • How Twitter is going to ruin your reputation
  • How Twitter is going to take over the world
  • Why you should use Social Media
  • Blah, Blah, Blah

You know, there are a lot of people that I have all the respect in the World for and I would listen to what they have to say.  But it seems as though once you hit 1000 tweets or so, you are automatically an expert.  Your Twitter profile background changes, you get the TinyURL web address...

Ok, I mean really. If I am already on Twitter I think I know how to use it.  Atealst I'm using the way I WANT to use it.

Now, back to the #twitterisbeginningtosuckrocks -I finally fled over to Facebook for a few weeks.

However, I do miss Twitter.  I am not connected to all of my Twitter folks on Facebook so I hopped over there again today.  To hear the same stuff.  How people are either doing everything right or everything wrong.  Very little conversation.  Hardly anything worth while.  It's all Advertising in one way or another.

It's almost like a 24 Hour 7 Day a Week Infomercial.

While I had fun getting my way to follow over 1200 people, I guess I'm going to have to weed down my list.

I love my people, But come on guys.  Enough with the AdvertisingEven the trending topics appear to be advertising.  It's getting Boring and Annoying.  I don't thinkg Twitter is about having a Half a Million followers or How to get Half a Million followers in an hour.

All of my Real Estate folks, I'm not talking about you guys.  All of the Greenies, I love you Guys.  Self Proclaimed Experts?  Gotta go.

If you guys know some good quality Twitter Folk, let me know!  I want a Twitter Stream full of Awesome people!

Hi Stepahnie - As with just about anything in life, with Twitter we have to take the good with the bad.  Like you, I've noticed that I get a lot of infomercials on Twitter.  I just ignore them and use Twitter for the productive part - staying in touch with friends like you and others who are tweeting things that are worthwhile and not necessarily so self-serving.

I agree twitter has gotten much more commercial.  I still am not enamored by twitter, but I use it from time to time.

I have thrown people off of my facebook for multiple posts in one day.  I can't imagine the potential overload with twitter.

Stephanie,

I still don't get twitter.  I mean I know people follow you and you follow people but does that ad up to business?  I've seen a lot of people claim to have tons of followers but far fewer claim to be putting together transactions.

When I first  joined twitter I thought it was great way to keep in touch and find useful update information. Now like you it seems to be full of self proclaimed experts. I loved having conversations with people I knew and people I didn't, doesn't seem to be happening now.

And I really hate the twits who only twit links to here  If I wanted to read you post, I would log on here, just sayin

Thanks for sharing your tips and thoughts...I think that the media is evolving and people will start to limit who they follow...I look at as a 140 character blog publishing tool for now...

:) PS

Hi Marlene,  Yeah - I know.  But it's annoying when 3/4 of the updates on the page are about how to use twitter..or blog...or whatever.  :)  How about Hi? How are you doing today and how are the kids?  :)

Hi David,  I used to love twitter...guess I'll just have to weed out some followers.

Hi Steve,  It can be overload but with following fun and informative people isn't.  :)  I need more awesome to follow.

Hi Brian,  I enjoy connecting with local people which can lead to business.  And of course there is the potential for referrals from other professionals.  In fact, I have used twitter to give out referrals...

Stephanie.... FB is full of advertising too (tons), so we have to accept it or not. I ONLY follow folks I want to follow on Twitter, including several news Twitterers... Ads are just a way of a company (be it Twitter, FB or AR) make $. I can see their side, though I could live without them (ads).

Stephanie...It's funny I just requested a friendship from you on facebook yesterday, this must be karma. I'm no Twitter expert, or facebook expert or even and activerain expert...but I can turn on a computer so I guess I'm qualified now. Steve

Hi Sandra,  I don't mind that as much...as long as they have conversations also.  I have connected with people on facebook and twitter that I had no idea were members of AR.

I stopped my AR feed to twitter so that I can pick and choose which ones go over there...

Well said! Twitter was SO much more fun before mainstream tv said you just HAD to do it! I follow AnaMarieCox for pithy yet personal insider political commentary and StephenFry a British personality who is always jetting off to find some fascinating animal in the world to cover on his tv show.

Just when I thought I might go 'public' with my twitterfeed I'm now pretty sure I'll stay hidden a bit longer!

Hi Patrick,  LOL. I don't know about tips.  :)  Just my opinion.  I don't think that only using it to link to blog posts...I don't know.  I like the conversation.

Hi Kat,  Yeah...it's the fan pages that are getting me.  Think I'm going to unsubscribe from a few of them soon.

Hi Steve,  and I gladly accepted the fried request.  :)  You seem like a pretty cool guy.

Hi Sarah,  I follow a few of the celebrities.  @aplusk @mrskutcher @ryanseacrest @mchammer - But it's not any of the celebrities or other folks that get on my nerves.  :)

Hi Vickie,  I don't know if I get it...but I know what I personally like.  I guess that proves that you can't please everyone.  LOL

Hi Stephanie - I've started using FollowWatch (http://www.twitter.com/FollowWatch) to show me which followers I lose each day. Normally these are just 'experts' or advertisers, so I can quickly go through the list and unfollow them. It's helped to keep my Twitter stream more relevant.

I agree Stephanie.  I think twitter is becoming what I thought it wasn't in the beginning.  If I get another GENERIC DM I am going to scream.  I hate that! KM

Hi Kristin,  Oh yeah.  Forgot about that.  "Thanks for following me!  Check out my website that is already on my profile but thought I would tell you again."   :)

Hey Stephanie -

I agree that things are getting a bit annoying in the twitter world.  For me, it's the people that are tweeting their life stories as they happen!  A couple people I follow tweet 20+ times in a day, or sometimes in an hour.  That's too much!  So, I used to find these people interesting, as they were people I wouldn't normally have access to.  However, now I have definitely lost interest.  I'm glad I'm not the only one that's beginning to question this phenomenon.

See you around the office!

Hi Steph-

First @OptMeOut will get rid of tons of auto DMs. Just check out their twitter account and follow the very simple instructions.

I love the social media experts who are only now beginning to twitter. Expert? Seriously? Too funny. I fear the twitter world has become one big echo chamber for anyone in marketing and soc media. I like people too much to enjoy any echo chamber.

I go back and forth between Twitter and Facebook. I unfollowed someone last night, she was usiing the F bomb and I just didn't get it. I wondered why I had followed her anyway.

Facebook is now organized for me so I am getting more out of it.

Twitter is great but  I do agree it is noisy...

Stephanie - I have a pretty simple rule that has helped me a lot.  If anywhere in their profile they use the words expert, guru, specialist, fanatic, marketing, genius - I take a quick look to see what they're selling.  If they're just trying to convince me to buy their new book or sign up for their e-newsletter or whatever...they are not followed and in many cases blocked.  I'm not here to fill your quotas or follow everyone just because.  @LaniAR once complimented me on my Twitter growth because I had blocked some people who didn't offer me much in terms of quality.  I don't need quantity.  I want real dialog with real people who I can learn from, share a story or a joke with, and do business with.  Anything else just gets in the way of my goal.

I've actually been formulating a post about how everyone thinks they're a social media expert or a marketing genius - but yet no one has impressed me with their info yet.  I can call myself a social media expert, but the fact is - I'm not.

I totally agree. And I've noticed all the marketing crap. They're just following Realtors. It's like they've found a new way to spam us.

I only follow a few select on Twitter. What I like about Twitter is that I can follow people that I otherwise would not find on facebook. If I get a follow for a product or marketing I don't follow back.
