Success appears in all forms imaginable although there is none ever so profound at this point in my life than the soothing, content feeling inside this ‘self' that determines and dictates who I am.  A ‘self' goes  through many different trials, errors and joyous tribulations during those years of ‘finding self' and some succeed in just understanding and accepting that things happen for a reason.

To learn from every situation and circumstance that one encounters is surely a gift and an experience to add to the memory bank for future use as one of the grand learning lessons on this journey called life.

Sometimes success means that one should have a LOT of money and be famous and ever so popular lest one feel like they are nothing. The determining factor for self worth for them is money and the wide recognition of deeds they have done with the ulterior motive of getting something in return.

For others it may mean climbing the highest mountain or having a bright shiny 5 carat diamond on their finger. It may even mean the coolest new style of clothing and 200 dollar pairs of shoes. How they ‘look' to others may not necessarily mean they are happy inside.

Then there are some who believe that success lies within ‘self' to the very depths of ones soul. I believe. It's deeply ingrained in my mind with  core beliefs, morals and values that surely have changed throughout those years of searching. THIS is what dictates and says who I am ...from the inside - out.

Things outside this ‘self' will not determine who I am. I've traveled that route before and nothing in this world will ever surpass these ....my own successes:

  • To touch one person's life with a smile, a gift of appreciation, a kind word or task to lift someone's orchid cjcspirit when it is weary.
  • To watch my children grow and succeed in their own ‘selves' and support them when they need it.
  • To remember where I ‘came from' and use them as constant reminders of where I want to go....or what I don't want to go back to.
  • To feel complete with what I do have....and not want for more and more and more.
  • To have balance with all aspects of my life and MAKE time for my husband, my family and me so I will not miss out on the moments shared....and to STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS.
  • To evaluate each and every day ...at the end of the day and know that I have fulfilled everything that I could possibly have done within the time allowed in each 24 hours in a day....and I sleep well at night.
  • To accept that I have no control over anyone in this world.....except this wonderful ‘self'
  • To understand that everything outside of ‘self' is only temporary and will not fill any voids within ‘self' but only for a moment.
  • To achieve goals I set and if it does not work out I strive to do better and I do not give up.
  • To accept that I am where I am at this point and time in my life and have no regrets for everything past.....that allowed me to learn, mature and grow into the person I am today.
  • To believe that no matter what happens there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

To know...that absolute success is the art of happiness within ‘self'

...everything else WILL follow.

Hi Sally - From being one of your blog-readers for so long, I feel that I know you well enough to say that by your measure, you are a success.  And each of those things are ones I strive to as well, but not always as successfully as I hope to.  Wonderful post!

Sally, success needs to be defined by ourselves and not by someone else's mark. Your list gives great food for thought. That sun with the cloud is amazing.

Sally - we all have a different definition of success.  For some it's purely money, for others ... perhaps social status.

As for me - it's about 'enough' ... that's all ... just enough.

I love the list and the heart that wrote it.  :)

Thanks for being such a sharing and caring soul.

Woo Hoo! Another amazing picture ( these are going to be worth a lot of money some day-if not now) and a great post about Self-Actualization. Yours. I was almost certain that Gary W. would use that word, since he didn't, he left it for me.

Amber skys, it is supposed to be amber fields of grain, so, very different. Quite amazing colors. We get a lot of pinks, oranges and purple colors. Is this a sunrise or a sunset? Since you are on an island and not sure from where you took this,  I thought I would ask, :-)

Spring cleaning is one of the most wholeseome things that can be done. When it is all done, things look re-newed again and it just feels fantastic, doesn't it.

I was supposed to be working on getting my posts written today ( but I did get another offer accepted to open escrow tomorrow -does that count ? )and I just don't feel like writing any more today.  ...............OK, I will try. :-)

Sally, enjoyed the post.  I agree.  We have to define success for ourselves whether it is 2 great kids, a happy marriage, or a career that meets our expectations.  We cannot let others tell us when we are successful but must feel it ourselves.

Sally you know who you are and that is a major success for anyone.

And "accepting that things happen for a reason" is something that we all need to learn if we are ever going to be happy in life.

Very well said.  We have to learn to recognize the importance of "self" and take a moment to reflect on that.  Each day we strive to become a better version of our "self".

Sally, I have to be honest.  I only skimmed the post.  From the comments it appears I am doing myself a disservice.  But I can't get past the gorgeous picture.  I could get lost in that view for hours.  Too bad sunsets last mere moments.

Sally, What a beautiful post and definitions of what we believe is success.  I love your words and realize I don't need the best, I just need enough and I have it.  I'm always grateful for that.  Your words are just beautiful and show what true happiness is really about.

I love this! I get so sick of the mentality that success can be reduced down to the limitations of how much money one has. Success is so much more than that. Well done.

Sally- You are a beautiful woman who has come to know herself and accept herself and who loves her family. You write your definition of your success so well and I love the part about - To accept that I have no control over anyone- those are magical words for I have found so much misery comes from being let down when one finds that they are not in control of others- I have been there, done that. How freeing it is to let go of that need to control things and people you will never control.

What is success to one is not the same to another, it is relative.  Most people who say that money defines their success do not know themselves since it is never about the money. It is always about something else; whether it is self esteem, confidence, fame, etc, those are the underlying emotions. I have found though, that our relationship with money determines whether we have it or not and whether we keep it when we get it or it just is all gone in a second. What is plenty for one person is not for another, that is a personal thing. In India- someone who has $1000 is a like a millionaire over here. It is all relative. I have always wanted to make money in order to do charity, and be a philanthropist which is my goal before I leave this world. But that would not define my success either.

That my dear was beautiful and so much my own philosophy that I can't tell you how lucky I feel to have found someone so far away who has traveled the rough roads of life and come to the same realizations.  We are who we are as a result of all our experiences and I would not trade a one because some part of me would be different.  To your success and to the continued journey!

sally, I think that you missed your calling. Real estate might be your passion , but you should seriously consider becoming a "life coach".  You are wise for your years, I think that many could benefit from your kind heart and view of the world. Your blog is always a pleasure to read, keep on blogging and keep on teaching.

Sally - what a beautiful description of success.  You are right, there will be many versions of what success is, but I must admit ... your definition also is the epitome of peace.  To be at peace with one's self and their surroundings is truly achieving success!  Congratulations - I am sure it was a long road, but look at the bright, peaceful, successful future you have in front of you!  Thank you for sharing!

Hi Sally - Thanks for an eye opening post. 3 months back, I accepted a position in property/facility management and have been missing the "real estate" I used to do.  Right now, I have to be content of where I am and work towards getting back to my passion to seller RE.

Carole: I have enough...it's the want for more and more that will get anyone into 'trouble'.

You're welcome martha....thanks.

Lisa: It sure is more than just...material things.

Katerina: I don't (and neither does anyone else) have control over anything in this whole wide world ...but self.  And so each individual's success.... defined by self.  And money is a personal thing. We all need it to live (unless we're Daniel Boone) ...
