Webmaster Jam Session, Dallas 2006

Granted, most Realtors and others related to the industry may have been bored silly at the Webmasters Jamdeconstructing a website on stage Session this weekend. That's OK, but upon reflecting upon the  multiple tidbits I have learned, I would like to offer my "Kristal Kliff Notes" to you.

The Jam Marque featured HUGE names in the Web design business, guys who wrote the book in their fields.  We got up close and personal with the likes of

Jared Spool ~ Designing for the Scent of Information  Good sites are rich with content, content sucks users towards it.
Every link gives off a scent that users follow
On Flash sites, Hire a Mime to stand in front of the grocery store.  Every person that comes along wanting to enter the grocery store, have the Mime perform for them, not letting them enter.  How do you think that customer will feel?
Professional usability studies aren't that expensive. (?)
Nick Longo   ~ CEO of CoffeeCup Software  On Viral Marketing: People decide what is viral (not marketing departments) The CoffeeCup website removed all advertising from home page, they replaced it with testimonials from customers . Sales doubled. Know who you are, know who your users are.
John Moore   ~ Starbucks Tribal Knowledge (this theme holds true for us too...)
Starbucks Code of Marketing Authenticity (on branding)
  1. be genuine and sincere
  2. Accentuate the human nature of the business
  3. Always say who you are, never who you are not
  4. Stay connected to employees
  5. Be true to the company's core values and origins
  6. Deliver on all promises made
  7. respect peoples' intelligence
  8. Never forsake the company's heritage and personality for a short term gain.
Q & A to the panel of experts...
Q = Is it possible to guarantee a top position on the Google (or other search engines)?
A = No.
Q = Are templates ok to use?
A = No matter what you do you can never hide the fact it's a template.  Good design starts before development not after.

Social Networking is HOT!  (really?)

GET YOUR FREE STUFF:  The CoffeeCup Software people brought lots of Nick Longos Great Book called, "My Website is Better than Yours" Learn HTML & Web Design from the Inside Out.  Since they didn't want to drag them back to the office, they let us have some extras.  I thought of my friends at Active Rain.  The top 3 people who write to me asking for a book will get one compliments of me (and Nick).  Sucking up is preferred...  :)

(this book is geared more toward 'entry level' folks than the other books listed above. It's a great Realtor resource book for building a site.)

So that's where you went!    I was going to ask for a book, then I read your last line about "entry level", so I guess I'll step aside on this one.

Maybe I flatter myself, but I like to think my HTML and CSS skills are fair to middlin'.

I first learned HTML in the heydays of Compuserve in the then-new and now-deceased Internet Publishing Forum.  Fondly called INET PUB by the regulars.  We drunk up a lot of those virtual beers <s>

KK, I am probably the most entry level person on this blog and if I get a book I'll happily share with Partner Paul, Tyler and everyone in our office who are addicted to AR.

Ok KK,

I'm sucking up...really. I know how to change font colors and bold/unbold and that's about it. I still haven't figured out how to upload pictures on AR. Although I can do it on blogspot. Strange.

Would love the book...and I'll even return it to you to "lend" out again!

Thanks,

Eileen

Before real estate I spent a little time in web design. I'm pretty good at concepts and basic layouts, but don't have all of the skill (or patience) to write the back ends. The challenge now that I'm in real estate is 'should I work on my sites myself, or hire a professional and focus on real estate activities?'

Dang, I am five.  Can someone send it to me when they are done?

KK, I've got a question for you about flash.  I've understood that there is nothing there for search engines to see when the first page is flash, so its not a great idea.  Our company just redid its homepage with a new flash thingy.  We have some smart web guys, but I don't know if this was such a great idea from a seo perspective.  I think they have other tricks up their sleeves though.

What do you think?

Maureen, I'll leave the SEO question for others - but here's my opinion from a user's point of view.  A flash thingy might be interesting to watch the first time.  But after you've seen it once, you just want to skip past it as quickly as possible to find whatever you came to the site to see.

We all visit Active Rain several times a day.  Imagine if you had to wait for some animated flash intro to play through every time you came here, when all you really wanted to do was check for new blogs from KK or Lovely Wife or Margaret or Whoever.

Dearest Kristal,
I would love to suck up to you all day long.  Somehow I think you know I mean it too!  ;)

I don't have a website yet, so the book would be most helpful for me.  I would love it.  However, if you decide that someone other than yours truly is more worthy of the book, I'll live.

I'll cry, but I'll live.  I'll just have to go buy one for myself.

Don't worry I'll still keep you on my favorites list... even if I'm not on yours.

Question, was the goal to suck up or give the best guilt trip?

Sara,

You are a woman of many talents!  Your sucking up is right up there.

I can see this contest will be very difficult.  I may need to call in the Price Waterhouse people to monitor the results and annouce the winners.

Kristal are you going to go to PuCon? It focuses on SEO, the most important part of your webdesign ;) .

An interesting read about designers is over at the FamousAgents blog and the post is "All Web Designers are Chicks". It more of a "fun"article than facts, but worth a read.

Hi Ken, Haven't been to a PubCon.  I would be interested in knowing more about it.  Please share that...

As far as SEO being the most important thing...that's only half true.  Content, well written customer  focused content is the other half...:)

there's just not enough hours in the day!

Thanks for the comment, I love hearing from the Big Dogs of RE-SEO like yourself.

PubCon is in Vegas in November. Just the location is enough reason for me to go, but it is full of great stuff also. There are panels with the real "Big Dogs" of SEO and even some Q&A sessions. Even Matt Cutts is a speaker there.

Here is the current schedule of events, it isn't exact as things always change with events like this, but it gives you an idea of the topics.

BTW a lot great of content is worthless if nobody knows about it, so SEO comes first IMO. Plus content writen without any consideration to search engines may not have the effect that you want.

Ken, It's not worthless, you can always PPC!  (tehe! notme!)

Thanks for the Pubcon Link, I'll check it out.  Las Vegas in not that far away...

Wow. the sessions are cheap.  I went to SES in San Jose last year, it was overr 3x's that much.

I almost went to SES this year, but realized I could go to PubCon for way less and have an excuse to go to Vegas. Even better I have a friend getting married in Vegas the weekend before so I get to combine trips.

Plus flying my Mother-in-law out to watch the baby so my wife and I can have some free time. The baby is 10 months old so it's been a while sense we have gotten to have a weekend to have fun.

As for PubCon there are a lot of people I know going so that made it even more actractive also. These are people that I have known for years online, but never met in person. Will be nice to network even further with them.
