From Fairview Mt. St. Helens Steam On this day, twenty-seven years ago, my family was busy moving into our brand new home in Milwaukie, Oregon.  My grandparents had moved to Eugene a few months earlier and we moved up north to be closer to them.  Because I was young, not much was left to discussion, but my dad promised that we would just love Oregon.  We had migrated north from southern California to find suburbia.  I remember playing outside and being told to come inside.  There was a rumbling then an eerie silence.  A couple of hours later a snow-like ash falling from the sky onto our furniture.  My dad had us all put on masks.  Any time we went outside for a few days, we had to wear these.  This is my first impression of the great state of Oregon
Today marks the twenty-seventh anniversary of eruption of Mt. St. HelensMt. St. Helens is located about 65 miles northeast of Portland, in the state of Washington.  Much has changed, but the mountain still seems to be teeming with activity.  A few years ago, I captured some little spurts of energy on film.  I have decided that the Pacific Northwest is a beautiful and wonderful place to live.

awesome pictures!  I think I would freak out if I saw something like that.  But I guess, being from San Francisco, people that aren't familiar would be afraid out our earthquakes (which really don't happen all that often).

Valerie - The wonder of nature! I remember my first eartquake in California; not a big one, still, it was terrifying. These are great pictures.

Hi Valerie - great pictures, and I bet that was a bit scary to have the air be so bad you had to wear masks to go outside.  Those 'little spurts of energy' would be a bit scary to me, as would earthquakes.

Valerie, I still remember. I was in college and we took off from Klamath Falls to Lake Shastina. When I got back there was this light cover of dust on my car.

Now, we live in Sherwood and on a clear day I have a beautiful view of what's left of Mt. St Helens. It would be interesting to see how spectacular the view would be if the entire mtn was still there.

Jonathan:  It is pretty exciting.  Thanks for reading!  Stop by anytime!

Paula:  Half of the times that I have visited southern California I have experienced earthquakes.  I still cant get over seeing the road undulate...WEIRD!

Ann:  It was pretty scary as a child since I didn't really realize what was going on.  It was my first impression of Oregon!

Larry:  So many people that I talk with once had great views of the mountain.  I never saw it whole in person.  You are lucky!

What a story!  That was quite an introduction to Oregon.  But it seems like a beautiful place to live.  I had a dear friend who went to law school in Eugene and she said it was her favorite place on earth.
