http://www.realestateappraisertips.info/ - I Finally Bought An External DVD Burner For Real Estate Appraisal Data Backup

Today, after doing some reading, I bought an External Memorex CD/DVD Recorder (MRX-530LE) @ Office Depot for $99 plus tax.   Backs up my appraisal files on CDs or DVDs (up to 9.4 Gigs on 1 DVD), plus other files, such as my workfile folders, comp photos backups, etc...   Yes, I have External Harddrive Backups, but that's "on-site".   This way, I can burn all I need to do and keep it "off-site", plus mail or deliver weekly backups to a trusted location.   In the past, I tried Mozy and that didn't work well for me.   An appraiser friend tried Carbonite, but when his computer went down, it was going to take several days for him to download his appraisal files....and his clients didn't want to wait several days to get their reports.

I burned 38 Gigs of appraisal data on 4 DVDs in just a few hours with no problems at all and feel much better about my data backup solution.

Good for you! After losing ALL of the data on my computer from a hard-drive crash, I have become a solid advocate of data backup. I use a service called Mozy. They have both residential and business solutions to data backup. It is a safe and secure way to backup my data at an UNBELIEVABLY low cost. Check it out, www.mozy.com.

Hi Tyler, Mozy is the exact reason I bought this external hard-drive.   You see, back about 2 years ago, R. Wayne Pugh, local MAI appraiser and past President of the Appraisal Institute 2008, reviewed Mozy for his "Cool Tools" section of the Appraisal Institute's Quarterly Magazine.   So, I tried it.   I had to have my computer totally reformatted at a computer shop and then reload all of my software back onto my computer after trying Mozy.   When I would right click on a photo or a group of photos to rename them, my computer would just sit there and rev up very, very loud and after about 5 minutes, would finally allow me to rename the photo(s).   Until I reformatted, My computer was not the same after I installed MOZY.   And No, even a system restore didn't help.   So, I wouldn't recommend sites like Mozy or Carbonite to anyone I know.   I tried Carbonite as well until my appraiser friend Chuck said, "Bill I had it and had no complaints. It did not affect my computer in any way. But after loosing all my data and trying to recover it using there platform I would not recommend them I had a lot of trouble with doc recovery."

Bill,

Software that slows down, or even ruins, the performance of your computer is never a good experience. I feel your frustration. I have used several software applications that had negative effects on my computer. I've never had a problem with Mozy so I will continue to use them, but it's unfortunate that technology can't work perfectly for everyone! I'm glad to hear you finally came up with a solution though.
