A number of ActiveRainers have requested that I share the process of combining a number of photos to create an animation or slide show, as pictured above.  The process is rather straight forward and simple to use, when using Paint Shop Pro with it's Animation Shop "wizard" function.  The screen captures below will walk you through it.

Open the Paint Shop Pro program.  Go to "File," scroll down and select "Run Animation Shop."  When Animation Shop comes up, go to "File" and select Animation Wizard.  Your first screen will come up which looks like the following.  For the animation illustrated at the top of this page, I used photos all of the same size: 640 pixels wide, and a 480 pixels height.  After you have input your size dimensions, hit "next."

When I do these animations, I generally select "Transparent" for my background color, and then hit "Next."

The following screen capture demonstrates the way I usually fill in the selections.  I then hit "Next."

When reaching the following screen I select "Yes, repeat the animation indefinitely" so that it repeats.  I also choose 300/100ths of a second (equates to 3 seconds) for each picture to display.  Remember to multiply the number of seconds you wish to display each picture by 100 to get the timing you desire.  Then hit "Next."

The following screen will allow you to add the images you wish to have as part of your animation.  You select these files from your hard-drive, etc.  Once you have selected all desired images, you hit "Next."

When you see the following screen, you are nearing the end of the process.  Select "Finish."

Once the Animation Wizard has completed the building of your animation, you will see a series of frames as viewed below.

Once you see your frames as above, you can hit the little button indicated by the red arrow on your tool box.  This will allow you to preview your animation.

To save your animation, hit "Save As" and the following screen comes up.  I prefer to select "Better Image Quality" and then hit "Next"

After hitting "Next" the program begins the "optimization" process, and when complete provides you with the "optimization" results.  I then select "Finish".  Paint Shop Pro will save your animation as a "gif" file.

I am so going to have to try this.  That way, I can add more photos to a post without making it look too cluttered.  Thanks, Myrl.

Thank you Myrl, that is a great tutorial.  I never realized that GIF files could be automated like that, but it sure gives a nice effect.

You put a lot of effort into that post and it shows!  Nice job.

Nicky and Patricia - Paint Shop Pro isn't an excessively expensive program.  If I remember correctly, I got it from Costco for about $89.00.  You might be able to find it on Ebay for even less.

Heather - For blogging purposes I love the uncluttered feel of putting multiple photos into a single animation.

Hannah and Barbara  - I'm glad you liked it.

Mike - I think the main reason it saved as a "gif" file, is because I generally choose "transparent" for the background.  "gif" is the only format that supports transparency.

Marchel, Toula - It's rather easy to use, so once you get going, you will find it flows easily.

Steve - I had several ask how I did the animations (slide shows), so had told them I'd create a tutorial.  I managed to stay true to my word:-)

Robert - Yes, feel free to contact me if you have problems.  But I think you will be amazed at how easy it is to do.

Maureen - Thanks so much for the Photography group feature.  It's appreciated.

Debi - The crazy thing about Paint Shop Pro is that it is relatively inexpensive compared to Adobe PhotoShop.  But in many ways it is easier to use, and does things PhotoShop won't.

Debbie and Jackie - The program isn't expensive.  It's around $100.00 or so.

Myrl, Your instructions were GREAT but as with everything I am feeling the learning curve.  I made my first animation and then tried to put it on AR but it is not animating.  I just have it in draft format at the moment but I would not think that would make a difference.  I know it worked as I can open the file and it animates.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong??

705,559 Points 38 Featured Posts Called Shot Master

Marchel - I suspect that you have created the animation perfectly, and the problem may be the .gif file format, and trying to upload it to ActiveRain.  I have had issues getting graphics to directly upload to ActiveRain, although other folks have no problem.

What I do with my animations is to upload them to my domain at: webstarmagic.com, and then refer to the web address of the animation, rather than uploading it to ActiveRain directly.  Do you have an outside web that you can upload it to, and then, use that URL for the embed here on ActiveRain?

WOW....I bookmarked this and flagged for a feature...GREAT tutorial, Myrl.  Can you also put a copywrite on your photos in Paint Shop Pro?  What else does it do that Photshop does not?

Marchel - Good luck!

William - I have found that Paint Shop Pro will do things that even Photo Shop won't.  And it's considerably more affordable.

Debra - Yes you can put a copywrite on your photos in Paint Shop Pro!

Hi Myrl, I have a gif animation file saved using just a gif animator program.  ( until I get my Paint Shop PRO software ).But, it does not give the location of the html code or embedding. How did you load your gif into the post? You mentioned to Marchel that you uploaded it to a website? Can't do that. Can you determine how to get the html code from the software? Do you happen to know where the html code is saved?

1:58pm • #31
705,559 Points 38 Featured Posts Called Shot Master

William - I have a website domain, which I uploaded the gif animation file to.  Then what I did in ActiveRain, was to input the URL of the animation in the dialogue box that comes when you click on the "insert/edit image" icon in ActiveRain.  If you right mouse click on my animation at the top, you will get an example.  The url is located at:

http://www.webstarmagic.com/animation_wizard/ani_tutorial_ani.gif

I haven't worked with trying to get the html code to upload to AR at all.  When Marchel tried to just upload the photo animation, the animation went static on her.

Myrl:  What a techie wild-woman you are.  I am impressed.  How inthe world did you learn to do that ?  I just fear that so much of this techie stuff is beyond me.  I would really have to have someone take me by the hand... and walk me through it... and I mean walk me through... with Baby Steps.  Great job.  You Go, Girl !

Hi Karen - I worked for a number of years for a wonderful software development company, and was able to explore many new and and explorative things:-)  However, using Paint Shop Pro and it's animation wizard is much easier than you might think.  It literally walks you in baby steps, through it.
