Hawaii Chess Kids Do Well at SuperNationals Tournament

A small group of youngsters representing Hawaii performed extraordinarily well.  Over 5,000 youngsters gathered this weekend, representing 47 states, for the Super Nationals, grades K-12 (all Nationals combined) in Nashville.  Even though there are lower rated divisions, all Hawaii players competed in their respective Championship Division, the highest available for their respective age/grade group.

Here are the results and awards.

Championship (Open) Divisions (Game/2 hours):

Blitz (Game/5 mins):

A special "Thank You" to Guy Ontai our state scholastic director for traveling with the team and reporting back on their progress.

Randy, I think it's wonderful that you coach these kids!  What a great way to keep them out of trouble!

Randy - I do hope that you've sent a link to this post to every parent and kid that you coach.  What a thrill for them to see their name/team in print like this.  Good for you for coaching these kids.  What an excellent way to help their minds grow.  I look at every negotiation as a chess match.  I try to anticipate the moves at least 3 ahead.  It isn't infallible, but it's a great goal!

Randy I know that your kids also play, but I do not see their names.  Did they compete, and if they did how did they place?

Patricia - The 9 that competed can all coach me today.  They have come a long way.

Marlene - I sent out the press release to the chess players, the media and the politicians.

Sally - Ford brought home our 3rd National title to our small club.  His brother would have got the title for his grade if he won or got a draw in the last game.  He lost a close one after going undefeated in the first 6 rounds.

George - My two sons did not make the trip.  My youngest Jacob is the 2nd grade state co-champ and my oldest Daniel was on his high school team.  They won the state title for the 2nd straight year.

William - These youngsters play at a level that the game becomes a piece of art.

It's nice to know that kids still like to play chess.  You should be commended for what you do.
