A quiet City Council cut the cities real estate tax rate to 89 cents Tuesday night. There were 19 residents to plead the case and two council members who wanted to slash the rate further. The $1.7 billion budget for fiscal 2008. The 10-cent reduction, gives Virginia Beach the lowest tax rate of the surrounding area of Tidewater. Of course, the lowest tax rate almost always goes with the highest home assesments and that is what Virginia Beach has. The city average of a home assessed at $323,000 will pay an additional $239 in taxes and the city will eat that up and still want more. This is the fourth year in a row the city has seen double digit assessments. It should probably cool some this year.
