Kentucky Has More Than One Winter...Right Now It's Redbud Winter

Lizette Realty Lizette Fitzpatrick

The cold spells that freeze all the young spring plants like the one right now are quite common.

A long time ago (in the late 60's) my Grandmother Elizabeth was visiting our farm at White Hall in Richmond, Kentucky. What a beautiful place that was!

It was a beautiful old 2 story home with 2 staircases inside sitting in between numerous maple trees with two barns for horses on 33 acres. We had just moved in but Dad wanted to plant our garden so we would have veggies all summer. The planting had to be timed just right.

That was when I first heard of the "other seasons" we have here in Kentucky. She said we had 4 extra winters before summer would be here. I'm not quite sure of the order but I think they are: Redbud Winter, Dogwood Winter, Locust Winter and Blackberry Winter.

Somehow winter shows up each time as each one blooms and hopefully it doesn't get cold enough to damage all the tender plants. If we are lucky this year everything with the spring weather will be perfect and all the new buds will not freeze and die!!!

It is cold to night in Atlanta for sure.  I never heard the terms but I love hearing information like this.

Lizette - I do believe I have seen that tree, I drove by/through White Hall all the time till we moved down here. Had not heard those 4 nicknames for the spring cold/freeze spells while living there, though.

John - I sure wish we could by-pass these winters and get on with the warm weather!

Gary - I think I am just impatient to see all the flowers.

Jim - I can remember seeing snow in Atlanta a time or two.

Thesa - That's funny! I can just picture the pain of wishing the snow tires were back on.

Don - Exactly!

Mike - As I drive through White Hall now all the nice pastures that I used to spend my days riding horses are gone. Replaced with houses and strip mall shopping.
