Shiloh Marsh Driving Tour at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Saturday April 11, 2009 - 10:00 am

Come on out and take a guided tour in the Wildlife Refuge along Shiloh Marsh Road, a relatively unknown drive located at the north section of the Refuge. Learn about the plants, wildlife, and management of this important ecological area. Call 321-861-5601 to make reservations and for information. The tour is via the Refuge van and seating is limited so call early. Loaner binoculars and field guides are available.

I'm a regular at the Refuge and every time I go, some new experience is the status quo. We were there this past Sunday and here's a glimpse of what we saw :-)....more to come

One of my favorite places to visit, and while I didn't always take a camera with me I enjoyed the hiking around the place. Awesome photos as always Gail.

I love Merritt Island, but I haven't been there in way too long. Thanks for posting those great photos, especially the butterfly. It's marvelous!

Hi Tamara...LOL, no the gators haven't made me nervous - yet! Glad you like these shots, the butterfly was hard to pin down...persistence pays!

Hi Mary: Good grief...look at the time, were you still up or yet to go to bed. I think it's funny that everyone is so concerned about the Gators....they really seem quite disinterested in us. Now if they started to get that gleam in their eye, I'd be back in the car in a hurry - promise!

Hi Caren: Here's a interesting little factoid....there are 1 million alligators in Florida and 60,000 of them live in the Refuge. They are hard to avoid...LOL Don't ask who counted, now there's a job for you!

Morning Debi - Thank you my Sweet :-) I would love to photograph more butterflies, but they are pretty tricky. Just when you get the shot ready...poof...away they go. I was lucky on this one...I'll take that! Steve Hoffacker posted one a few months ago......STUNNING!!! Check it out.

Thanks Jackie...I actually did this tour yesterday as I prefer not to do the group thing in favor of being able to stop and go as I please. It was pretty rough, this road is not open often, I would say it resembled Old Florida to a T. I was surprised at how quiet it was in that part of the Refuge...did see quite a few Roseates though :-)
