Just met with some people that I've know for over 30 years. Well respected attorneys and doctors in our community that have the highest peer and public ratings. While I was meeting with each, both (independently of each other) mentioned that in the last 30 days they had gone out and purchased a hand gun. One of the individuals is a married father of 5. The other is a retired father of 5.
I know what you're thinking...these guys are whack jobs. I have a shotgon for trap shooting, shooting at the farm and for some occasional pheasant hunting, but have never made the jump to a hand gun. My buddy has about 8 or 9 of them, but he's an enthusiast, so I'm not throwing him in the mix.
When I asked both of these guys why they got the guns, they said that they were fearful that Obama's next step would be to take away the consitutional right for them to bear arms and just wanted to have one locked away, just in case all hell broke loose at some point. I asked them where they were going to shoot them. They said at a local gun range, or practice on some farm land or by the lake. As weird as it sounds it was intriguing and very interesting conversation. I really enjoy conversations that aren't the same old mundane conversations, as well as learning the psyche of those who think differently than I do.
Needless to say, I did some research later and found that the gun shops love the fact that Obama is in office. The gun sales have skyrocketed as there's a perceived need for self defense. One United Press International story goes
Sales of handguns and rifles have skyrocketed across the United States amid fears President-elect Barack Obama will curtail firearm laws, figures show.
A Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokesman said a one-day record for background check requests for firearm purchases was set last weekend in the state thanks to concerns that an Obama administration would mean stricter gun laws, The New York Times said Friday.
"We're not really sure who is promoting the concept that a change in federal administrations might affect firearms possession rights," agency spokesman Lance Clem said of last Saturday's record, "but we do know that it's increased business considerably."
Maybe this is useless information, but I'm fascinated by this. I understand that most of the sales are going to educated, successful people, women are included in the sharp increase of these purchases. What does this mean? Not really sure. Glad that the non-criminals are buying them instead of the criminals, but still.....not sure what this will mean in the long run. I do know that there's no recession as it comes to gun sales. WOW!
I'm not ripping Obama here. Let me make that clear. I'm writing this post just because this is something that I never saw coming. Love to hear your thoughts.
