Just met with some people that I've know for over 30 years.  Well respected attorneys and doctors in our community that have the highest peer and public ratings.  While I was meeting with each, both (independently of each other) mentioned that in the last 30 days they had gone out and purchased a hand gun.  One of the individuals is a married father of 5.  The other is a retired father of 5.

I know what you're thinking...these guys are whack jobs.  I have a shotgon for trap shooting, shooting at the farm and for some occasional pheasant hunting, but have never made the jump to a hand gun.  My buddy has about 8 or 9 of them, but he's an enthusiast, so I'm not throwing him in the mix.

When I asked both of these guys why they got the guns, they said that they were fearful that Obama's next step would be to take away the consitutional right for them to bear arms and just wanted to have one locked away, just in case all hell broke loose at some point.  I asked them where they were going to shoot them.  They said at a local gun range, or practice on some farm land or by the lake.  As weird as it sounds it was intriguing and very interesting conversation.  I really enjoy conversations that aren't the same old mundane conversations, as well as learning the psyche of those who think differently than I do.

Needless to say, I did some research later and found that the gun shops love the fact that Obama is in office.  The gun sales have skyrocketed as there's a perceived need for self defense.  One United Press International story goes

Sales of handguns and rifles have skyrocketed across the United States amid fears President-elect Barack Obama will curtail firearm laws, figures show.

A Colorado Bureau of Investigation spokesman said a one-day record for background check requests for firearm purchases was set last weekend in the state thanks to concerns that an Obama administration would mean stricter gun laws, The New York Times said Friday.

"We're not really sure who is promoting the concept that a change in federal administrations might affect firearms possession rights," agency spokesman Lance Clem said of last Saturday's record, "but we do know that it's increased business considerably."

Maybe this is useless information, but I'm fascinated by this.  I understand that most of the sales are going to educated, successful people, women are included in the sharp increase of these purchases.  What does this mean?  Not really sure.  Glad that the non-criminals are buying them instead of the criminals, but still.....not sure what this will mean in the long run.  I do know that there's no recession as it comes to gun sales.  WOW!

I'm not ripping Obama here.  Let me make that clear.  I'm writing this post just because this is something that I never saw coming.  Love to hear your thoughts.

Just a guess here but I think when the Internet was proclaiming that to work for the Obama Campaign and later adminstration, one had to answer the question:  Do you own a gun?  Do you know anyone who owns a gun?  Those two questions sent creepy crawlies up the spine of many people.  Why would those questions be asked on an employment application?

Well it appears that President Obama is just trying to jump start the economy. So start buying shares of gun and ammo manufacturers.

My husband and I already own quite a few guns.  Recently we took the class and applied for our concealed gun permit.  We also bought an assault rifle. The shop owner said he can't keep them in stock and yes, his business is good. Thinking about the future...severe inflation, increased taxes, will bring out the worst in some people. Each administration (especially Democrats) chips away at the 2nd Amendment.

In situations where a person goes into a crowd or building and starts shooting, there could be less loss of life if a citizen in that building had a gun to stop the shooter.  Politicians want to cure the violence by suggesting we need to have gun control.  More citizens should be armed to protect themselves.

Larry, I'm curious to know of all these people who are buying guns, how many of them voted Obama into office?

Our forefathers intent for 'The Right To Bear Arms' was for the people to defend themselves against the Government.

Chuck...weird indeed.

Gail...never heard that.  That is wierd.

Harry...I guess it comes to the right to defend yourself, I suppose.

Sandra...what a great perspective.  Hadn't thought of that one.

Tony...ditto Tony...good call.

Larry, I agree with you. Very strange phenomenon relative to gun sales. My take is it started during the campaign and has been gaining traction ever since. Good for the gun manufacturers! As far as criminals not buying guns??? They're criminals! They steal guns or buy hot guns stolen by someone else. The increase in sales MAY provide them with more opportunities given that more inexperienced non-criminals are buying them. Kinda makes my head spin! I don't own a gun. Probably never will. BUT, I'll defend our rights to bear arms guaranteed by our constitution! Thought provoking post Mr. B!

Larry, I wrote a blog about this.  Obama and our new Attorney General are no fans of the Second Ammendment.  As a lifelong hunter and gun owner I think what they are doing is just another example of the liberal politicians trying to control everything they do not understand.  The problem has never been with US citizens who legally own firearms..

I am amazed at the amount of spin that whips around this country. Blame on the Democrats. Blame it on the Republicans. Everyone has an agenda, and everyone takes whatever is said, and spins it to their own agenda. Obama says there needs to be stricter enforcement of gun control laws, the Republicans say he wants to take away the 2nd amendment. I am so sick of this crap.

Well at least Obama is helping stimulate one part of the economy without massive bailout money.  The gun shops and manufacturers must be thrilled.

To Michael Mackey - Are you saying he doesnt want to take away the second ammendment? Perhaps not take it away but severly handicap it. He voted to prosecute homeowners who were are invaded and shoot the invader. So if your house is broken into you cant protect your family. Are you sick of that? He voted to limit how many handguns somebody could buy in a give time frame? Are you sick of having your freedom limited? Lets look at what good guns do. Arizona has one of the lowest car jacking rates in the country (it might even be the lowest not sure) the reason, because handguns are allowed to be carried by citizens. What people should be sick of is not people fearing for losing their freedoms but rather be sick of the fact that people have to even be afraid they could be taken away!

This is very interesting. I don't own a gun since all my brothers have many. BUT it does make me stop and think. Seriously.

Not strange at all.  There had been enough rhetoric before the election and plenty of people talking this way.  Right after the election, some types of ammo became harder to get and still is that way.  Gun owners have been fighting this right for years, and see for the first time in ages, a President that may not be on there side.

My only surprise is that the supply is still as good as it is.  People were scared for many reasons.  But, with owning a gun comes along it's own set of responsibilities.

I own several guns and pistols.  I use them ALL.  I target shoot with all and hunt with all including my pistols!  The move to own a gun is just starting.  It's a right that they feel if taken away, what will be the next one.

They may be educated, but they aren't very smart. A President can't just take away a constitutional right. Many people are just scared in general, right now. ANd too many people on tv, radio, and the internet are fueling the fear instead of being rational.

I was sitting at a stop sign, looked over and noticed a pawn shop.  The scrolling marque message was "buy a gun now while you still can."  Surprising you bet!

In California some guns are on backorder they seem to be in high demand these days. Guns are more expensive in the community were I live and people are still placing orders.

Wow....glad that I can add to the controversial topic of the moment.

Leslie....I disagree with you.  As soon as I have more disposable income, I'll buy one or two guns.  They'll stay locked away in a gun safe along with the ammo, but let's be honest, JP is right....where the private citizens walk around with them by following the laws, crime diminishes.  I don't like just the criminals holding the cards.  We don't punish them, we just house them and make them worse for when they get back on the street.

Scott & Dean...thanks for your transparency.  I'm with ya!

Down South where I come from, the first 100 days of any new presidency is when people go out and buy guns. I think it's a right of passage out of respect for the new dude in the office.

If they think that one person can take away the right to bear arms, I would suggest that instead of spending their time at the gun store, they enroll in a civics class and study the American form of government.

I have an uncle in South Texas who has more weapons than all the U.S. military currently in the invaded countries of Iraq and Afghanistan. Just one of many reasons why I don't visit him. He only has two hands. If he's planning on holing up somewhere like David Koresh, there's nothing I can do about that.

Larry, I had heard this and seen it too. Someone said the ammunition couldn't be in stock in the South is sold so fast. We don't own a gun, never have but have we been tempted? yes Talked about it? Yes

It remains to be seen what we will do, I don't like the fact of a gun in my home but also don't want to be left in the cold should this right be taken away.

Wow Russell...angry words dude.  The constitution does speak for itself, but a civics lesson would suggest that the new regime is re-writing the constitution.  They have already begun to re-write it.  But again....I'm not making this poliitcal....just curiosity.  BTW....there was never a spike with any of the other new presidents like this one.  That includes dems and reps....

Missy...me too.  I have a shotgun.  I don't want a gun, but I'm not going to let my rights being taken away.
