Ever wonder how you could take in the sites of Fairfax County without having to put up with stoplights and honking horns? If you are ready to shake off the winter time blues and enjoy green shaded paths then dust of your bike or your comfortable shoes and head out to the Fairfax County Cross County Trail (CCT).
Starting at the Occoquan River at the Occoquan Regional Park and heading north to Great Falls National Park the trial winds through some of the prettiest parts of Fairfax County. Covering 40 miles of paths that cross streams and includes paths in a number of the Fairfax County Parks the trail gives you a good flavor of the county from urban to rural. Not all of the CCT is a stroll in the park. For more hardy bikers there are streams to ford and more difficult terrain such as the highly rated dirt bike trail at Wakefield Park. For others you can handle the five miles around Burke Lake Park and not worry about breaking a sweat.
If a 40 mile trek isn't enough for you then the CCT also has access points to the Washington and Old Dominion trail (W&OD) which leads you all the way to Purcellville another 45 miles away. If you are looking for exercise, adventure and nature in Fairfax County then check out the CCT and see how the vision of community leaders and county officials came together to provide a protected trail for residents to enjoy for generations to come.
